The Case Study Of Vanitas Part 2 - What We Know So Far

Vanitas from The Case Study of Vanitas

On Aug. 6, the English-dubbed version of "The Case Study of Vanitas" arrived at Funimation's website , bringing the steampunk-styled supernatural mystery manga series to life for a whole new audience. The vampire -based anime, set in Paris of the 19th century, is very atmospheric, what with its airships, period clothing and blue-moon and crimson vampires. It starts with the young vampire Noé, who is asked by his teacher to go to Paris to look for the titular book. In an incident on the airship, he meets a girl named Amelia — who turns out to be a vampire named Florifel, who just needs her name returned to her — and blue-eyed Vanitas himself. Vanitas enlists his help in changing the "curse-bearing" vampires back to normal using the grimoire in question.

"The Case Study of Vanitas" has aired 12 episodes of its split-cour season, which is normal for anime shows — but now leaves fans to wonder when Part 2 will happen, and what will happen going forward, since the series hasn't exactly concluded its plot. If you're one of the fans anxiously awaiting news of the second part of the first season, here's what we know so far.

When is the release date for The Case Study of Vanitas Part 2?

The @vanitas_anime Twitter account announced on Sept. 17 that the second cour (or quarter of a year) of "The Case Study of Vanitas" is coming in January 2022. This is good news, as it means fans won't have too long to wait:  Anime News and Facts is reporting that the 12 episodes in the second part of the split-cour series will air between Jan. 8 and March 26, 2022. It should be noted that these dates refer to the Japanese release, not the English one.

However, English-speaking fans shouldn't experience too much of a delay. The initial Japanese run premiered on various channels starting July 2 ( via Anime News Network ), which means it was subtitled with the first episode dubbed by the time it released on Funimation a little over a month later. Comingsoon.com said that Funimation had released five dubbed episodes by September 17 (a paid subscription is required to access the dubbed versions of newer episodes).

Hopefully, that means U.S. fans will be streaming at least a subtitled second part of Season 1 by springtime.

Who are the characters in The Case Study of Vanitas Part 2?

The main characters of the series include Noé Archiviste, played in the Japanese by Kaito Ishikawa, and Vanitas (not the original of the book), played by Natsuki Hanae. Supporting characters include Jeanne (Inori Minase), a vampire girl also called the "Hellfire Witch"; Luca (Shino Shimoji), a polite vampire boy ranking just below the queen, who is trying to save his brother; Dominique (Ai Kayano), the aristocratic daughter of the alien lord the Marquis de Sade; Veronica (Yoko Hikasa), Dominique's sister who hates humans; Ruthven (Toshiyuki Morikawa), Luca's uncle and the hero who brokered peace between humans and vampires.

Others include Dante (Taro Kuichi), Johann (Koji Yusa), and Richie (Riho Kuma), Vanitas' information brokers, and Noé's unnamed teacher (Akira Ishida), the one who sent him to find the book. Vampire Naenia (Kaori Nazuka), vampire hunter Laurent (Kengo Kawanishi), Holy Knight Olivier (Tomoaki Maeno) and Noé's first friend Louis de Sade (Miyuri Shimabukuru) also appear. There's also the cat, Murr (Miyu Komaki). Not all have survived Season 1, though, so they won't necessarily appear in Part 2.

The English dub cast of the series includes Stephen Fu as Noe, Zeo Robinson as Vanitas, Marianne Bray as Murr, Ian Sinclair as Dante, and Hayden Daviau as Amelia.

What is the plot of The Case Study of Vanitas Part 2?

As the first part of the first season ended, the Beast of Gévaudan has resurfaced, so Noé and Vanitas go to investigate sightings of it. The beast will likely figure largely in the events of the second part of the season, as will Vanitas' relationship with Noé. Viewers may also finally learn the intentions of the secret organization Charlatan because of the big reveal in the end-credits scene. As viewers know, Ruthven figures largely in the plotting that's been going on, and he has hypnotized Noé with Jeanne's unwitting help, which could all blow up in Part 2. Meanwhile, Roland is going through a crisis of faith because he has learned that not all vampires are bad, and the show will no doubt explore the ramifications of that.

"The Case Study of Vanitas" will feature 12 episodes in Season 1 Part 2, making up a total of 24 episodes in the first season. The anime has been rapidly catching up to the manga:  Monsters and Critics predicts that by the 24th episode, the anime will be up to Chapter 43 of the manga. The manga is expected to publish Chapter 61, which means season 2 might be a more difficult sell than the first.

Sora to Utsuro

  • View history

Sora to Utsuro (空と虚) is the first opening theme of the anime adaptation of Jun Mochizuki 's The Case Study of Vanitas , composed and sung by Sasanomaly .

The title is a poetic translation of the Latin word "Vanitas." [1]

Its Japanese title, 空と虚, can have multiple meanings. The icons 空 and 虚 are in fact different ways of writing the same word, and each can mean "sky," "emptiness," "futility," and "lies." Most of these meanings are shared with the Latin word "vanitas."

On July 16th, Sora to Utsuro released its full digital version. Later that day, Sasanomaly announced that it would be included in a mini album with songs inspired by The Case Study of Vanitas . [2]

Are human emotions like love generally simple? You're thinking about How it would be great if you could come to understand them someday You've been hurt so many times, until you're an assorted patchwork thing That can't even tell what it means to be "alive" It's fine if you don't say it's "just the two of us" After all, I have a feeling we understand each other And that is enough, for now. I love this world, the light that only you can give it, Look, it makes the cracked words of this world that I experience Seem like they're dazzling There's no such thing as something that's guaranteed, But those eyes can see me, can't they? Is prose generally insensitive to hollowness? I'm thinking about How the number of lies increases one by one Playing with a simple mechanism, My rusted head is trembling, In my daydream, you were smiling radiantly. Yet, without knowing, we just want to laugh Throw away the answer, whatever you want is fine for now. I love this world, in this world that lacks everything and anything, If the mechanical song I've started resounds, Look, everything seems funny It's not a past I can be proud of, but This burning dream is beautiful, isn't it? When sky and void meet, look back at the dreams yet ahead When sky and void meet, you're still beginning to bloom When sky and void meet, we're born to die repeatedly Both lies and the future fall apart, and laugh. I love this world, the light that only you can give it, Look, it makes the cracked words of this world that I experience Seem like they're dazzling There's no such thing as something that's guaranteed, But those eyes can see me, can't they?

99 million people included in largest global vaccine safety study

19 February 2024

Health and medicine , Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences

The Global Vaccine Data Network, hosted at the University of Auckland, utilises vast data sets to detect potential vaccine safety signals

Global Vaccine Data Network co-director Dr Helen Petousis-Harris: Latest study uses vast data sets to ensure vaccine safety.

The Global Vaccine Data Network (GVDN) assessed 13 neurological, blood, and heart related medical conditions to see if there was a greater risk of them occurring after receiving a Covid-19 vaccine in the latest of eight studies in the Global COVID Vaccine Safety (GCoVS) Project.

Recently published in the journal Vaccine , this observed versus expected rates study included 99 million people (over 23 million person-years of follow-up) from 10 collaborator sites across eight countries. The study identified the pre-established safety signals for myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) and pericarditis (inflammation of the thin sac covering the heart) after mRNA vaccines, and Guillain-Barré syndrome (muscle weakness and changed sensation (feeling)), and cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (type of blood clot in the brain) after viral vector vaccines.

Possible safety signals for transverse myelitis (inflammation of part of the spinal cord) after viral vector vaccines and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (inflammation and swelling in the brain and spinal cord) after viral vector and mRNA vaccines were identified.

So far, these findings were further investigated by the GVDN site in Victoria, Australia. Their study and results are described in the accompanying paper. Results are available for public review on GVDN’s interactive data dashboards .

Observed versus expected analyses are used to detect potential vaccine safety signals. These studies look at all people who received a vaccine and examine if there is a greater risk for developing a medical condition in various time periods after getting a vaccine compared with a period before the vaccine became available.

Lead author Kristýna Faksová of the Department of Epidemiology Research, Statens Serum Institut, Copenhagen, Denmark, remarked that use of a common protocol and aggregation of the data through the GVDN makes studies like this possible. “The size of the population in this study increased the possibility of identifying rare potential vaccine safety signals,” she explains. “Single sites or regions are unlikely to have a large enough population to detect very rare signals.”

By making the data dashboards publicly available, we are able to support greater transparency, and stronger communications to the health sector and public.

Associate Professor Helen Petousis-Harris Co-Director, Global Vaccine Data Network hosted at University of Auckland

GVDN Co-Director Dr Steven Black said, “GVDN supports a coordinated global effort to assess vaccine safety and effectiveness so that vaccine questions can be addressed in a more rapid, efficient, and cost-effective manner. We have a number of studies underway to build upon our understanding of vaccines and how we understand vaccine safety using big data.”

GVDN Co-Director Dr. Helen Petousis-Harris said, “By making the data dashboards publicly available, we are able to support greater transparency, and stronger communications to the health sector and public.”

The GCoVS Project was made possible with support by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to allow the comparison of the safety of vaccines across diverse global populations.

About the Global Data Vaccine Network

Established in 2019 and with data sourced from millions of individuals across six continents, the GVDN collaborates with renowned research institutions, policy makers, and vaccine related organisations to establish a harmonised and evidence-based approach to vaccine safety and effectiveness.

The GVDN is supported by the Global Coordinating Centre based at Auckland UniServices Ltd, a not-for-profit, stand-alone company that provides support to researchers and is wholly owned by the University of Auckland. Aiming to gain a comprehensive understanding of vaccine safety and effectiveness profiles, the GVDN strives to create a safer immunisation landscape that empowers decision making for the global community. Two years since Russia’s invasion, Ukraine’s startups soldier on

case study of vanitas opening 2

This weekend marks exactly two years since Russia’s illegal, unprovoked and brutal invasion of Ukraine. Despite overwhelming odds and continued hiccups in the supplies of Western aid to fight off Russia’s onslaught, and the trail of destruction resulting from the fighting, the country and its tech startup ecosystem have soldiered on, becoming a case study in resilience.

Of the 511 tech companies based in Kharkiv before February 2022 — these days a city better known for coming under regular Russian bombardment — 500 are still operating, according to the organization overseeing Kharkiv’s tech cluster.

Tech companies in the West have rallied around the sector, increasingly working with Ukrainian tech firms on a range of initiatives.

This week, Google launched its second “Google for Startups Ukraine Support Fund” with a budget of $10 million to support Ukrainian startups during 2024 and 2025. Selected Ukrainian startups will receive up to $200,000 in equity-free funding, as well as Google mentorship, product support and $300,000 in Google Cloud credits. Since the war started, Google claims to have allocated more than $45 million in direct aid and $7 million to support humanitarian efforts.

Since the war broke out, the scheme has provided 58 startups with $5 million in non-equity grants and $15.8 million in follow-on funding. Tech companies supported in this way have included Skyworker.ai, Mindly and Zeely. Zeely raised a $1 million seed round last year.

Meanwhile, Estonian accelerator Startup Wise Guys launched Growth Ukraine, a program for startups in Ukraine.

And the EU-funded “Seeds of Bravery” project has launched five programs to support Ukrainian tech startups, with grants ranging from €10,000 to €50,000.

Last week, the nonprofit startup support program UK-Ukraine TechExchange launched, specializing in defense tech and agtech.

The private pro-bono program mainly works with startups developing drones, UAVs sound-based missile detection, counter-drone technology and drones for agricultural applications.

Ukraine’s tech sector is astoundingly resilient, and even growing.

A recent survey from the Lviv IT Cluster (“Adaptability and Resilience Amidst War”) — which it said is based on interviews with 7,000 tech specialists and more than 400 companies — found that while a substantial number of technology specialists have fled the country, the majority remain, including Ukrainians studying and entering the workforce at home and abroad.

The total number of tech specialists, it said, has increased by more than 7%, to 307,600 people. Some 242,000 of these continue to live and work in Ukraine. The number of Ukrainian tech people dispersing internationally is up to 65,000 from 55,000-57,000 a year ago, a rise of 20%.

Those workers, and Ukraine’s tech sector, have contributed to keeping the country’s economy afloat amid the war.

The tech industry contributed 4.9% (or $7.1 billion) to Ukraine’s GDP last year. In Emerging Europe’s IT Competitiveness Index, published in April last year, Ukraine took 12th place, rising from 14th in 2022.

Poland, unsurprisingly considering its shared border, has quickly become the top country for those fleeing the country. Some 36% of Ukrainian CEOs plan to open new offices, 28% of them abroad, with the majority choosing Poland as their second base of operation.

Ukraine is also exporting the technology behind its rapidly developing digital government. mRiik, Estonia’s latest digital tool, has been based on Ukraine’s Minister of Digital Transformation Diia app, which securely stores ID cards, passports and driving licenses digitally, as well as allows access to some public services.

The same Ministry of Digital Transformation also runs the Ukrainian Startup Fund , which has become the country’s largest angel investor, backing over 350 startups. Many of these startups, responding to the climate in which they are working and getting funded, have pivoted toward defense and dual-use applications.

To fuel that ecosystem further, in Spring 2023, the country launched a defense tech initiative called BRAVE1 . This fast-tracks innovation in the defense and security sectors. It has funded more than 400 projects, with almost 200 having also undergone live military testing.

More mature Ukrainian startups, and startups headed by Ukrainian founders, have not stood still, either:

  • Preply raised a further $70 million in funding last year — a combination of debt and equity — to extend its Series C to $120 million. It now has 650 employees and 40,000 language tutors. It claims to have increased revenue by 10-fold since 2021, and recently set up a new office in New York City. It is providing free group language lessons to displaced Ukrainians, and charges no commission fees to any tutors based in Ukraine and more.
  • Ukrainian software company MacPaw is in the final stages of developing a beta version of an app store for iOS apps, aimed at EU-based iPhone users.
  • At the end of 2023, Firefly Aerospace closed another tranche of financing, valuing the company at $1.5 billion pre-money, it claims. It says it’s raised $300 million in funding since February 2023.
  • Carmoola , a British fintech for car financing co-founded by Ukrainians Roman Sumnikov and Ihor Hordiychuk, secured $125 million in funding in February 2023, followed by an additional $16 million in January 2024. It’s backed by VCs including VentureFriends, InMotion Ventures and u.ventures.
  • Fintech Farm , a digital banking solution pioneer founded by Ukrainians, raised $22 million to venture into emerging markets.
  • DressX , a digital fashion retailer initiated by Ukrainians Darya Shapovalova and Natalia Modenova, secured $15 million to expand its AR and digital clothing offerings.
  • Vidby , which has AI-based voice translation solutions, with an R&D center in Ukraine (and a Ukrainian CEO and co-founder).
  • NewHomesMate , a marketplace of new construction homes in the U.S., has raised $5.5 million in funding.
  • ELVTR , an education startup with Ukrainian founders and team, retains 45% of its staff in Ukraine.
  • Geek VC is a $23-million VC fund which invests in Ukrainian immigrant founders. The fund was created by Ukrainian Vadim Rogovskiy in partnership with Ihar Mahaniok months before the war began. Twenty-five percent of their portfolio companies are run by Ukrainian founders.
  • Hypra Fund launched shortly after the invasion of Ukraine. The fund has allocated nearly $20 million toward companies with Ukrainian heritage, including a $10 million in Trinetix.
  • Spend With Ukraine is a nonprofit that curates a web platform with more than 240 Ukrainian-rooted brands. By choosing to  #spendwithUkraine, consumers worldwide can stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
  • Respeecher is an AI tool for voice replication technology that works with Hollywood movie studios. Because the Crimean Tatar language is deemed critically endangered by UNESCO, Respeecher’s team gathers the voices of Crimean Tatar speakers to safeguard a language threatened during Russia’s occupation.
  • Petcube , a company that develops interactive pet cameras, launched Cam 360 and a GPS Tracker for pets.
  • Everyrun is a Ukrainian-British social running platform offering solutions for marathon organizers, charities and corporations aiming to host running events. In the last year it launched its product, the company has formed partnerships with marathon organizers in Lithuania and Italy, and attracted runners from 32 countries.
