Lesson 1: Your behavior is determined by 2 systems in your mind – one conscious and the other automatic.

System 1 is automatic and impulsive .

It’s the system you use when someone sketchy enters the train and you instinctively turn towards the door and what makes you eat the entire bag of chips in front of the TV when you just wanted to have a small bowl.

System 1 is a remnant from our past, and it’s crucial to our survival. Not having to think before jumping away from a car when it honks at you is quite useful, don’t you think?

System 2 is very conscious, aware and considerate .

It helps you exert self-control and deliberately focus your attention. This system is at work when you’re meeting a friend and trying to spot them in a huge crowd of people, as it helps you recall how they look and filter out all these other people.

System 2 is one of the most ‘recent’ additions to our brain and only a few thousand years old. It’s what helps us succeed in today’s world, where our priorities have shifted from getting food and shelter to earning money, supporting a family and making many complex decisions.

However, these 2 systems don’t just perfectly alternate or work together. They often fight over who’s in charge and this conflict determines how you act and behave.

Lesson 2: Your brain is lazy and causes you to make intellectual errors.

Here’s an easy trick to show you how this conflict of 2 systems affects you, it’s called the bat and ball problem.

A baseball bat and a ball cost $1.10. The bat costs $1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

I’ll give you a second.

If your instant and initial answer is $0.10, I’m sorry to tell you that system 1 just tricked you.

Do the math again.

Once you spent a minute or two actually thinking about it, you’ll see that the ball must cost $0.05. Then, if the bat costs $1 more, it comes out to $1.05, which, combined, gives you $1.10.

Fascinating, right? What happened here?

When system 1 faces a tough problem it can’t solve, it’ll call system 2 into action to work out the details.

But sometimes your brain perceives problems as simpler as they actually are. System 1 thinks it can handle it, even though it actually can’t, and you end up making a mistake .

Why does your brain do this? Just as with habits, it wants to save energy . The law of least effort states that your brain uses the minimum amount of energy for each task it can get away with.

So when it seems system 1 can handle things, it won’t activate system 2. In this case, though, it leads you to not use all of your IQ points, even though you’d actually need to, so our brain limits our intelligence by being lazy.

Lesson 3: When you’re making decisions about money, leave your emotions at home.

Even though Milton Friedman’s research about economics built the foundation of today’s work in the field, eventually we came to grips with the fact that the  homo oeconomicus , the man (or woman) who only acts based on rational thinking, first introduced by John Stuart Mill , doesn’t quite resemble us.

Imagine these 2 scenarios:

  • You’re given $1,000. Then you have the choice between receiving another, fixed $500, or taking a 50% gamble to win another $1,000.
  • You’re given $2,000. Then you have the choice between losing $500, fixed, or taking a gamble with a 50% chance of losing another $1,000.

Which choice would you make for each one?

If you’re like most people, you would rather take the safe $500 in scenario 1, but the gamble in scenario 2. Yet the odds of ending up at $1,000, $1,500 or $2,000 are the exact same in both.

The reason has to do with  loss aversion. We’re a lot more afraid to lose what we already have, as we are keen on getting more .

We also perceive value based on  reference points.   Starting at $2,000 makes you think you’re in a better starting position, which you want to protect.

Lastly, we get less sensitive about money (called  diminishing sensitivity principle ), the more we have. The loss of $500 when you have $2,000 seems smaller than the gain of $500 when you only have $1,000, so you’re more likely to take a chance.

Be aware of these things. Just knowing your emotions try to confuse you when it’s time to talk money will help you make better decisions. Try to consider statistics, probability and when the odds are in your favor, act accordingly.

Don’t let emotions get in the way where they have no business. After all, rule number 1 for any good poker player is “Leave your emotions at home.”

If you're prone to making rash decisions that you sometimes regret — or feel too burned out to spend a lot of time weighing out the pros and cons of certain choices — this book is definitely worth checking out.

Solving complicated problems takes mental work, so our brain cuts corners when we're tired or stressed..

Sometimes we think fast and sometimes we think slow. One of the book's main ideas is to showcase how the brain uses these two systems for thinking and decision-making processes. System 1 operates intuitively and automatically – we use it to think fast, like when we drive a car or recall our age in conversation. Meanwhile, System 2 uses problem-solving and concentration – we use it to think slowly, like when we calculate a math problem or fill out our tax returns. 

Since thinking slow requires conscious effort, System 2 is best activated when we have self-control, concentration, and focus. However, in situations when we don't have those – like when we feel tired or stressed — System 1 impulsively takes over, coloring our judgment. 

I recognized that my fast thinking was attributed to the fact that I was busy all the time and didn't incorporate very many breaks into my schedule. I felt exhausted and distracted at the end of long days, so I was using System 1 to make decisions instead of System 2. To gain more concentration and focus, I started practicing more mindfulness strategies and incorporating more breaks, which have helped me tremendously in making better choices for myself.

One of the main reasons we jump to conclusions is confirmation bias.

Kahneman says our System 1 is gullible and biased, whereas our System 2 is doubting and questioning — and we need both to shape our beliefs and values. When I was making a decision, I found that I was searching for evidence that supported my choice, rather than finding counterexamples. I made decisions so quickly using System 1 that I didn't start questioning those decisions until I realized I didn't make the right choice. 

Now, I make sure I'm truly weighing the pros and cons of each decision, especially when the stakes are high. For example, I'm moving to a different city in the next few months and am currently looking at apartments. I first thought about moving to a particular place based on a friend's recommendation, which seemed like the easiest thing to do. 

But, after reading the book, I learned I was actually rushing the decision and looking for evidence to support moving there, instead of really thinking things through. Now, I'm making sure to look at a wide variety of options with things I like and things I dislike about each apartment, such as price, location, and amenities.

When making a decision, we should always focus on multiple factors.

When I read this part of the book, I found this point extremely relatable. Most decisions are tied to weighing multiple factors, but sometimes we only focus on the one factor we're getting the most pleasure from, which can be a big mistake, because the factor that we initially find fulfilling often gives us less pleasure as time progresses. 

Using this logic, I look at the bigger picture and make sure I am attracted to a commitment for multiple reasons. In my apartment hunt, I'm now prioritizing moving into buildings with a rooftop, gym, and lobby, so I can not only enjoy those amenities but easily meet new people in a new city. There are always a few apartments I come across with a beautiful, renovated kitchen, and while it would be so nice to cook with a luxury oven and stove, I realize that I'd get used to those appliances and it wouldn't make a difference to me as much as being able to hang out with my neighbors or friends on the roof.

Kahneman presents the human mind when making decisions through three types of lenses, each represented by one or more parts of the book. The first and third lenses rely on partially opposed, partially collaborative “characters” that Kahneman crafts to represent facets of the human mind. In Part 1, he discusses the two systems of thinking, System 1 and System 2 . These systems of thinking include the “fast” thinking, intuitive System 1, which governs most decisions most of the time, and the “slow” thinking System 2, which comes into play for careful evaluation, such as one might use to solve a complicated math problem. In Part 5, Kahneman discusses two “selves,” which can be understood as an experiencing self that lives in the moment and a remembering self that is more evaluative and draws on the memory’s storage of past experiences.

In between these two presentations of the mind as divided, Kahneman discusses a vast array of complex psychological processes that constitute how people actually—and often illogically—make decisions. Parts 2, 3, and 4 tour the heuristics, biases, illusions, and aspects of human thinking that frequently lead to illogical decisions and other errors. Part 4 reviews much of Kahneman’s work with Amos Tversky in developing prospect theory , which showed the errors of then-dominant economic theory. Thinking, Fast and Slow concerns a few major questions: how do we make decisions? And in what ways do we make decisions poorly?

The book covers three areas of Daniel Kahneman’s research: cognitive biases, prospect theory, and happiness.

System 1 and 2

Kahneman defines two systems of the mind.

System 1 : operates automatically and quickly, with little or no effort, and no sense of voluntary control

  • Examples: Detect that one object is farther than another; detect sadness in a voice; read words on billboards; understand simple sentences; drive a car on an empty road.

System 2 : allocates attention to the effortful mental activities that demand it, including complex computations. Often associated with the subjective experience of agency, choice and concentration

  • Examples: Focus attention on a particular person in a crowd; exercise faster than is normal for you; monitor your behavior in a social situation; park in a narrow space; multiply 17 x 24.

System 1 automatically generates suggestions, feelings, and intuitions for System 2. If endorsed by System 2, intuitions turn into beliefs, and impulses turn into voluntary actions.

System 1 can be completely involuntary. You can’t stop your brain from completing 2 + 2 = ?, or from considering a cheesecake as delicious. You can’t unsee optical illusions, even if you rationally know what’s going on.

A lazy System 2 accepts what the faulty System 1 gives it, without questioning. This leads to cognitive biases. Even worse, cognitive strain taxes System 2, making it more willing to accept System 1. Therefore, we’re more vulnerable to cognitive biases when we’re stressed.

Because System 1 operates automatically and can’t be turned off, biases are difficult to prevent. Yet it’s also not wise (or energetically possible) to constantly question System 1, and System 2 is too slow to substitute in routine decisions. We should aim for a compromise: recognize situations when we’re vulnerable to mistakes, and avoid large mistakes when the stakes are high.

Cognitive Biases and Heuristics

Despite all the complexities of life, notice that you’re rarely stumped. You rarely face situations as mentally taxing as having to solve 9382 x 7491 in your head.

Isn’t it profound how we can make decisions without realizing it? You like or dislike people before you know much about them; you feel a company will succeed or fail without really analyzing it.

When faced with a difficult question, System 1 substitutes an easier question , or the heuristic question . The answer is often adequate, though imperfect.

Consider the following examples of heuristics:

  • Heuristic question: How much do I like this company?
  • Heuristic question: What’s my current mood?
  • Heuristic question: Does this person look like a political winner?

These are related, but imperfect questions. When System 1 produces an imperfect answer, System 2 has the opportunity to reject this answer, but a lazy System 2 often endorses the heuristic without much scrutiny .

Important Biases and Heuristics

Confirmation bias: We tend to find and interpret information in a way that confirms our prior beliefs. We selectively pay attention to data that fit our prior beliefs and discard data that don’t.

“What you see is all there is”: We don’t consider the global set of alternatives or data. We don’t realize the data that are missing. Related:

  • Planning fallacy: we habitually underestimate the amount of time a project will take. This is because we ignore the many ways things could go wrong and visualize an ideal world where nothing goes wrong.
  • Sunk cost fallacy: we separate life into separate accounts, instead of considering the global account. For example, if you narrowly focus on a single failed project, you feel reluctant to cut your losses, but a broader view would show that you should cut your losses and put your resources elsewhere.

Ignoring reversion to the mean: If randomness is a major factor in outcomes, high performers today will suffer and low performers will improve, for no meaningful reason. Yet pundits will create superficial causal relationships to explain these random fluctuations in success and failure, observing that high performers buckled under the spotlight, or that low performers lit a fire of motivation.

Anchoring: When shown an initial piece of information, you bias toward that information, even if it’s irrelevant to the decision at hand. For instance, in one study, when a nonprofit requested $400, the average donation was $143; when it requested $5, the average donation was $20. The first piece of information (in this case, the suggested donation) influences our decision (in this case, how much to donate), even though the suggested amount shouldn’t be relevant to deciding how much to give.

Representativeness: You tend to use your stereotypes to make decisions, even when they contradict common sense statistics. For example, if you’re told about someone who is meek and keeps to himself, you’d guess the person is more likely to be a librarian than a construction worker, even though there are far more of the latter than the former in the country.

We believe we’re being rational most of the time, but really much of our thinking is automatic , done subconsciously by instinct. Most impressions arise without your knowing how they got there. System 2 thinking has a limited budget of attention - you can only do so many cognitively difficult things at once.

This limitation is true when doing two tasks at the same time - if you’re navigating traffic on a busy highway, it becomes far harder to solve a multiplication problem.

This limitation is also true when one task comes after another - depleting System 2 resources earlier in the day can lower inhibitions later. For example, a hard day at work will make you more susceptible to impulsive buying from late-night infomercials. This is also known as “ego depletion,” or the idea that you have a limited pool of willpower or mental resources that can be depleted each day.

All forms of voluntary effort - cognitive, emotional, physical - seem to draw at least partly on a shared pool of mental energy.

Think of your brain as a vast network of ideas connected to each other. These ideas can be concrete or abstract. The ideas can involve memories, emotions, and physical sensations.

When one node in the network is activated, say by seeing a word or image, it automatically activates its surrounding nodes , rippling outward like a pebble thrown in water.

As an example, consider the following two words:

“Bananas Vomit”

Suddenly, within a second, reading those two words may have triggered a host of different ideas. You might have pictured yellow fruits; felt a physiological aversion in the pit of your stomach; remembered the last time you vomited; thought about other diseases - all done automatically without your conscious control .

The evocations can be self-reinforcing - a word evokes memories, which evoke emotions, which evoke facial expressions, which evoke other reactions, and which reinforce other ideas.

Links between ideas consist of several forms:

  • Cause → Effect
  • Belonging to the Same Category (lemon → fruit)
  • Things to their properties (lemon → yellow, sour)

System 1 continuously monitors what’s going on outside and inside the mind and generates assessments with little effort and without intention. The basic assessments include language, facial recognition, social hierarchy, similarity, causality, associations, and exemplars.

  • In this way, you can look at a male face and consider him competent (for instance, if he has a strong chin and a slight confident smile).
  • The survival purpose is to monitor surroundings for threats.

However, not every attribute of the situation is measured. System 1 is much better at determining comparisons between things and the average of things, not the sum of things. Here’s an example:

Putting it all together, we are most vulnerable to biases when:

  • System 1 forms a narrative that conveniently connects the dots and doesn’t express surprise.
  • Because of the cognitive ease by System 1, System 2 is not invoked to question the data. It merely accepts the conclusions of System 1.

In day-to-day life, this is acceptable if the conclusions are likely to be correct, the costs of a mistake are acceptable, and if the jump saves time and effort. You don’t question whether to brush your teeth each day, for example.

In contrast, this shortcut in thinking is risky when the stakes are high and there’s no time to collect more information, like when serving on a jury, deciding which job applicant to hire, or how to behave in an weather emergency.

When presented with evidence, especially those that confirm your mental model, you do not question what evidence might be missing. System 1 seeks to build the most coherent story it can - it does not stop to examine the quality and the quantity of information .

Kahneman transitions to Part 2 from Part 1 by explaining more heuristics and biases we’re subject to.

The general theme of these biases: we prefer certainty over doubt . We prefer coherent stories of the world, clear causes and effects. Sustaining incompatible viewpoints at once is harder work than sliding into certainty. A message, if it is not immediately rejected as a lie, will affect our thinking, regardless of how unreliable the message is.

Furthermore, we pay more attention to the content of the story than to the reliability of the data . We prefer simpler and coherent views of the world and overlook why those views are not deserved. We overestimate causal explanations and ignore base statistical rates. Often, these intuitive predictions are too extreme, and you will put too much faith in them.

This chapter will focus on statistical mistakes - when our biases make us misinterpret statistical truths.

The Law of Small Numbers

The smaller your sample size, the more likely you are to have extreme results. When you have small sample sizes, do NOT be misled by outliers.

Anchoring describes the bias where you depend too heavily on an initial piece of information when making decisions.

In quantitative terms, when you are exposed to a number, then asked to estimate an unknown quantity, the initial number affects your estimate of the unknown quantity. Surprisingly, this happens even when the number has no meaningful relevance to the quantity to be estimated.

Examples of anchoring:

  • Students are split into two groups. One group is asked if Gandhi died before or after age 144. The other group is asked if Gandhi died before or after age 32. Both groups are then asked to estimate what age Gandhi actually died at. The first group, who were asked about age 144, estimated a higher age of death than students who were asked about age 32, with a difference in average guesses of over 15 years.
  • Students were shown a wheel of fortune game that had numbers on it. The game was rigged to show only the numbers 10 or 65. The students were then asked to estimate the % of African nations in the UN. The average estimates came to 25% and 45%, based on whether they were shown 10 or 65, respectively.

Thinking, Fast and Slow Summary Part 2-3: Availability Bias

When trying to answer the question “what do I think about X?,” you actually tend to think about the easier but misleading questions, “what do I remember about X, and how easily do I remember it?” The more easily you remember something, the more significant you perceive what you’re remembering to be. In contrast, things that are hard to remember are lowered in significance.

More quantitatively, when trying to estimate the size of a category or the frequency of an event, you instead use the heuristic: how easily do the instances come to mind? Whatever comes to your mind more easily is weighted as more important or true. This is the availability bias.

This means a few things:

  • Items that are easier to recall take on greater weight than they should.
  • When estimating the size of a category, like “dangerous animals,” if it’s easy to retrieve items for a category, you’ll judge the category to be large.
  • When estimating the frequency of an event, if it’s easy to think of examples, you’ll perceive the event to be more frequent.

Read the following description of a person.

Tom W. is meek and keeps to himself. He likes soft music and wears glasses. Which profession is Tom W. more likely to be? 1) Librarian. 2) Construction worker.

If you picked librarian without thinking too hard, you used the representativeness heuristic - you matched the description to the stereotype, while ignoring the base rates.

Ideally, you should have examined the base rate of both professions in the male population, then adjusted based on his description. Construction workers outnumber librarians by 10:1 in the US - there are likely more shy construction workers than all librarians !

More generally, the representativeness heuristic describes when we estimate the likelihood of an event by comparing it to an existing prototype in our minds - matching like to like. But just because something is plausible does not make it more probable.

The representativeness heuristic is strong in our minds and hard to overcome. In experiments, even when people receive data about base rates (like about the proportion of construction workers to librarians), people tend to ignore this information, trusting their stereotype...

As we’ve been discussing, the general solution to overcoming statistical heuristics is by estimating the base probability, then making adjustments based on new data. Let’s work through an example.

Julie is currently a senior in a state university. She read fluently when she was four years old. What is her grade point average (GPA)?

People often compute this using intensity matching and representativeness, like so:

  • Reading fluently at 4 puts her at, say, the 90th percentile of all kids.
  • The 90th percentile GPA is somewhere around a 3.9.
  • Thus Julie likely has a 3.9 GPA.

Notice how misguided this line of thinking is! People are predicting someone’s academic performance 2 decades later based on how they behaved at 4. System 1 pieces together a coherent story about a smart kid becoming a smart adult.

The proper way to answer questions like these is as follows:

  • Start by estimating the average GPA - this is the base data if you had no information about the student whatsoever. Say this is 3.0.

Thinking, Fast and Slow Summary Part 3: Overconfidence | 1: Flaws In Our Understanding

Part 3 explores biases that lead to overconfidence. With all the heuristics and biases described above working against us, when we construct satisfying stories about the world, we vastly overestimate how much we understand about the past, present, and future.

The general principle of the biases has been this: we desire a coherent story of the world. This comforts us in a world that may be largely random . If it’s a good story, you believe it.

Insidiously, the fewer data points you receive, the more coherent the story you can form. You often don’t notice how little information you actually have and don’t wonder about what is missing. You focus on the data you have, and you don’t imagine all the events that failed to happen (the nonevents). You ignore your ignorance.

And even if you’re aware of the biases , you are nowhere near immune to them. Even if you’re told that these biases exist, you often exempt yourself for being smart enough to avoid them.

The ultimate test of an explanation is whether it can predict future events accurately. This is the guideline by which you should assess the merits of your beliefs.

Humans have to make decisions from complicated datasets frequently. Doctors make diagnoses, social workers decide if foster parents are good, bank lenders measure business risk, and employers have to hire employees.

Unfortunately, humans are also surprisingly bad at making the right prediction. Universally in all studies, algorithms have beaten or matched humans in making accurate predictions. And even when algorithms match human performance, they still win because algorithms are so much cheaper.

Why are humans so bad? Simply put, humans overcomplicate things.

  • They inappropriately weigh factors that are not predictive of performance (like whether they like the person in an interview).
  • They try too hard to be clever, considering complex combinations of features when simply weighted features are sufficient.

We are often better at analyzing external situations (the “outside view”) than our own. When you look inward at yourself (the “inside view”), it’s too tempting to consider yourself exceptional— “the average rules and statistics don’t apply to me!” And even when you do get statistics, it’s easy to discard them, especially when they conflict with your personal impressions of the truth.

In general, when you have information about an individual case, it’s tempting to believe the case is exceptional, and to disregard statistics of the class to which the case belongs .

Here are examples of situations where people ignore base statistics and hope for the exceptional:

  • 90% of drivers state they’re above average drivers. Here they don’t necessarily think about what “average” means statistically—instead, they think about whether the skill is easy for them, then intensity match to where they fit the population.

Prior Work on Utility

How do people make decisions in the face of uncertainty? There’s a rich history spanning centuries of scientists and economists studying this question. Each major development in decision theory revealed exceptions that showed the theory’s weaknesses, then led to new, more nuanced theories.

Expected Utility Theory

Traditional “expected utility theory” asserts that people are rational agents that calculate the utility of each situation and make the optimum choice each time.

With the foundation of prospect theory in place, we’ll explore a few implications of the model.

Probabilities are Overweighted at the Edges

Consider which is more meaningful to you:

  • Going from 0% chance of winning $1 million to 5% chance
  • Going from 5% chance of winning $1 million to 10% chance

Most likely you felt better about the first than the second. The mere possibility of winning something (that may still be highly unlikely) is overweighted in its importance . Indifference curves and the endowment effect.

Basic theory suggests that people have indifference curves when relating two dimensions, like salary and number of vacation days. Say that you value one day’s salary at about the same as one vacation day.

Theoretically, you should be willing to trade for any other portion of the indifference curve at any time. So when at the end of the year, your boss says you’re getting a raise, and you have the choice of 5 extra days of vacation or a salary raise equivalent to 5 days of salary, you see them as pretty equivalent.

But say you get presented with another scenario. Your boss presents a new compensation package, saying that you can get 5 extra days of vacation per year, but then have to take a cut of salary equivalent to 5 days of pay. How would you feel about this?

Likely, the feeling of loss aversion kicked in. Even though theoretically you were on your indifference curve, exchanging 5 days of pay for 5 vacation days, you didn’t see this as an immediate exchange.

As with prospect theory, the idea of indifference curves ignores the reference point at which you start . In general, people have inertia to change .

When you evaluate a decision, you’re prone to focus on the individual decision, rather than the big picture of all decisions of that type. A decision that might make sense in isolation can become very costly when repeated many times.

Consider both decision pairs, then decide what you would choose in each: Pair 1 1) A certain gain of $240. 2) 25% chance of gaining $1000 and 75% chance of nothing. Pair 2 3) A certain loss of $750. 4) 75% chance of losing $1000 and 25% chance of losing nothing. As we know already, you likely gravitated to Option 1 and Option 4. But let’s actually combine those two options, and weigh against the other. 1+4: 75% chance of losing $760 and 25% chance of gaining $240 2+3: 75% chance of losing $750 and 25% chance of gaining $250 Even without calculating these out, 2+3 is clearly superior to 1+4. Part 5 of Thinking, Fast and Slow departs from cognitive biases and mistakes and covers the nature of happiness.

(Shortform note: compared to the previous sections, the concepts in this final portion are more of Kahneman’s recent research interests and are more a work in progress. Therefore, they tend to have less experimental evidence and less finality in their conclusions.)

Happiness is a tricky concept. There is in-the-moment happiness, and there is overall well being. There is happiness we experience, and happiness we remember.

Consider having to get a number of painful shots a day. There is no habituation, so each shot is as painful as the last. Which one represents a more meaningful change?

Measuring experienced well-being.

How do you measure well-being? The traditional survey question reads: “All things considered, how satisfied are you with your life as a whole these days?”

Kahneman was suspicious that the remembering self would dominate the question, and that people were terrible at “considering all things.” The question tends to trigger the one thing that gives immense pleasurable (like dating a new person) or pain (like an argument with a co-worker).

To measure experienced well-being, he led a team to develop the Day Reconstruction Method, which prompts people to relive the day in detailed episodes, then to rate the feelings. Following the philosophy of happiness being the “area under the curve,” they conceived of the metric U-index: the percentage of time an individual spends in an unpleasant state .

It takes energy to think and exercise self-control. Our mental capacity gets depleted with use, and we’re programmed to take the path of least resistance. In the book, Kahneman elaborates on the “Law of Least Effort”, and how System 1 and System 2 work together to affect our perceptions and decisions. Heuristics and How System 1 Works

For instance, when consciously or subconsciously exposed to an idea, we’re “primed” to think about associated idea(s), memories & feelings. This is the “Associations and Priming” heuristic. If we’ve been talking about food, we’ll fill in the blank SO_P with a “U”, but if we’ve been talking about cleanliness, we’ll fill in the same blank with an “A”. People reading about the elderly unconsciously walk slower, and people who are asked to smile find jokes funnier. Each associated idea evokes even more ideas, memories, and feelings. This is called the associative mechanism .

Essentially, System 1 works using shortcuts like associations, stories and approximates, tends to confuse causality with correlation, and jumps to inaccurate conclusions. System 2 is supposed to be our inner skeptic, to evaluate and validate System 1’s impulses and suggestions. But, it’s often too overloaded or lazy to do so. Here are a couple of examples:

Small Sample Sizes

Most of us know that small sample sizes are not as representative as large samples. Yet, System 1 intuitively believes small sample outcomes without validation. We make decisions based on insufficient or unrepresentative data. Moreover, System 1 suppresses doubt by constructing coherent stories and attributing causality. Once a wrong conclusion is accepted as “true”, it triggers our associative mechanism, spreading related ideas through our belief systems.

Causes Over Statistics

Statistical data are facts about a case, e.g. “50% of cabs are blue”. Causal data are facts that change our view of a case, e.g. “blue cabs are involved in 80% of road accidents” – we may infer from the latter that blue cab drivers are more reckless. In the overview of key heuristics, we learn how System 1 thinks fast using categories and stereotypes, and likes causal explanations. When we’re given statistical data and causal data, we tend to focus on the causal data and neglect or even ignore the statistical data. In short, we favor stories with explanatory power, over mere data.

Heuristics Cause Overconfidence

We feel confident when our stories seem coherent and we are at cognitive ease. Unfortunately, confidence does not mean accuracy.  Kahneman explains 3 main reasons why we tend to be overconfident in our own assessments.

Specifically, we’re overconfident in several areas:

Overconfidence in Perspectives

We think we understand the world and what’s going on, because of our Narrative Fallacy (how we create flawed stories to explain the past, which in turn shape our views of the world and our expectations of the future), and Hindsight Illusion (the tendency to forget what we used to believe, once major events or circumstances change our perspectives).

Overconfidence in Expertise

We’re also overconfident the validity of our skills, formulas and intuitions, which are unfortunately not valid in many circumstances. In the book, Kahneman explains when we can trust “expert intuition”, and when not to.

Over-Optimism

Finally, we tend to be overly optimistic, taking excessive risks. Kahneman explains the planning fallacy syndrome and how we should balance it using a more objective “ outside view ”.

Heuristics Affect Choices

Obviously, how we perceive and think about inputs affect our choices. Using exercises and examples, the book helps us to see our own decision-making processes at work, to understand why our heuristics can result in flawed, and less-than-optimal decisions.

The Prospect Theory

In particular, the Prospect Theory (which won Kahneman the Nobel Prize in Economics) is built on 3 key ideas:

  • The absolute value of money is less vital than the subjective experience that comes with changes to your level of wealth. For example, having $5,000 today is “bad” for Person A if he owned $10,000 yesterday, but it’s “good” for Person B if he only owned $1,000. The same $5,000 is valued differently because people don’t just attach value to wealth – they attach values to gains and losses.
  • We experience reduced sensitivity to changes in wealth , e.g. losing $100 hurts more if you start with $200 than if you start with $1000.
  • 50% chance to win $1,000 OR get $500 for sure => Most people will choose the latter
  • 50% chance to lose $1,000 OR lose $500 for sure =>Most people will choose the former

Generally, our brain processes threats and bad news faster, people work harder to avoid losses than to attain gains, and they work harder to avoid pain than to achieve pleasure.

The Fourfold Pattern of Preferences

The Fourfold Pattern of Preferences also helps us to understand the Certainty Effect and Possibility Effect, and how we evaluate gains and losses.

Our Two Selves

In a nutshell, our heuristics influence our choices, which can be irrational, counter-intuitive and sub-optimal. It’s impossible to totally avoid biases and errors from System 1, but we can make a deliberate effort to slow down and utilize System 2 more effectively, especially when stakes are high.

In his research on happiness, Kahneman also found that we each have an “experiencing self” and a “remembering self” – our memories override our actual experiences, and we make decisions with the aim of creating better memories (not better experiences). Thinking, Fast and Slow is written by Daniel Kahneman –an Israeli-American psychologist. When we face any big challenge or try to take a deep look at situations by employing System 2, we can solve critical situations by focusing our attention on the situation at hand. While the first system generates ideas, intuitions, and impressions, the second system is responsible for exercising self-control and overriding System 1’s impulses.

The author discusses cognitive biases and heuristics in decision-making. Biases like anchoring, availability, confirmation bias, and overconfidence significantly influence our judgments, often leading to suboptimal choices. Awareness of these biases is the first step towards mitigating their impact.

The writer explains this with a bat and ball problem. A bat and a ball cost $1.10 together, and the bat costs $1 more than the ball. What is the cost of the ball?

Most people will answer $0.10, which is incorrect. Intuition and rash thinking force people to assume that the ball costs 10 cents. However, looking at the problem mathematically, if the cost for a ball is $0.10 and the bat is $1 more, then that would mean the bat costs $1.10, making the total $1.20, which is wrong. It is a System 2 problem, requiring the brain to see a $0.05 ball plus a $1.05 bat equals $1.10.

Similarly, people often assume that a small sample size can accurately represent a larger picture, simplifying their world perception. However, as per Kahneman, you should avoid trusting statements based on limited data.

Heuristics and biases pose decision-making challenges due to System 1. System 2’s failure to process information promptly can result in individuals relying on System 1’s immediate and biased impressions, leading to wrong conclusions.

As per the Prospect Theory by Kahneman, humans weigh losses and gains differently.  Individuals can make decisions based on perceived gains instead of perceived losses. 

Elaborating on this theory of loss aversion, Kahneman observes that given a choice between two equal options—one with a view of potential gains, and the other with potential losses—people will choose the option with the gain, because that’s how the human mind works.  

Kahneman also highlights a psychological phenomenon called The Endowment Effect. The theory focuses on our tendency to ascribe higher value to items simply because we own them. This bias has profound implications for economic transactions and negotiations.

The author explains this by telling the story of a professor who collected wines. The professor would purchase bottles ranging in value from $35 to $100, but if any of his students offered to buy one of the bottles for $1,000, he would refuse.

The bottle of wine is a reference point, and then psychology takes over, making the potential loss seem more significant than any corresponding gains. 

Kahneman delves into the concept of regression to the mean—extreme events are often followed by more moderate outcomes. 

Recognizing this tendency allows accurate predictions and avoids undue optimism or pessimism. For instance, an athlete who does well in their first jump tends to under-perform in the second attempt because their mind is occupied with maintaining the lead.

The Planning Fallacy highlights our inherent tendency to underestimate the time, costs, and risk-taking involved in future actions. Awareness of this fallacy is essential for realistic project planning and goal-setting. 

Suppose you are preparing for an upcoming project and predict that one week should be enough to complete it, given your experience. However, as you start the project, you discover new challenges. 

Moreover, you fall sick during the implementation phase and become less productive. You realize that your optimism forced you to miscalculate the time and effort needed for the project . This is an example of a planning fallacy.

Kahneman explores the concept of intuitive expertise, emphasizing that true mastery in a field leads to intuitive judgments. 

We have all seen doctors with several years of experience instantly recognizing an illness based on the symptoms exhibited by a patient. However, even experts are susceptible to biases, and constant vigilance helps avoid errors of subjective confidence.

Kahneman writes about the Two Selves , i.e. the experiencing self and the remembering self. 

Let’s try to understand this with a real-life experience. You listen to your favorite music track on a disc which is scratched at the end and makes a squeaky sound. You might say the ending ruined your music-listening experience. However, that’s incorrect; you listened to the music, and the bad ending couldn’t mar the experience that has already happened. This is simply you mistaking memories for experience.

Rules of memory work by figuring out preferences based on past experiences. The remembering self plays a crucial role in the decision-making process , often influencing choices according to past preferences. For example, if you have a good memory about a past choice, and are asked to make a similar choice again, your memory will influence you to pick the same thing again. 

It is important to distinguish between intuition and actual experiences. The experiencing self undergoes events in the present, while the remembering self shapes choices based on memories. Understanding this duality prevents overemphasis on negative experiences.

“ Thinking, Fast and Slow ” is a groundbreaking book by Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman, a psychologist and economist known for his work in the field of behavioral economics . The book, published in 2011, outlines his theories about the two systems of thought that humans use to process information. 

Thinking Fast and Slow Summary

Kahneman introduces two systems of thought in the human mind: System 1, which is quick, instinctive, and emotional, and System 2, which is slower, more deliberative, and logical.  

The central thesis of the book is how these systems shape our judgments and decision-making.

Part One: Two Systems

In the first part of the book, Kahneman delves into the characteristics of the two systems. System 1 operates automatically and quickly, with little or no effort and voluntary control , while System 2 involves mental activities demanding effort , such as complex computations and conscious decision-making.

Part Two: Heuristics and Biases

Here, Kahneman discusses how the two systems contribute to cognitive biases. What can we learn from the book?

Overconfidence and the illusion of validity.

Kahneman discusses how people often overestimate their ability to predict outcomes, leading to a false sense of confidence. This cognitive bias, called the illusion of validity, affects all types of predictions – ranging from financial forecasts to weather predictions. 

For example, stock traders may believe they can accurately predict market trends, which can lead to risky investment behavior , when in reality, much of these predictions are subject to numerous unpredictable variables.

The anchoring effect

Another significant lesson from the book is the concept of the anchoring effect, a cognitive bias (already discussed above) where individuals rely heavily on an initial piece of information ( the “anchor” ) to make subsequent judgments. 

For instance, in a negotiation, the first price set (the anchor) significantly affects how both parties negotiate thereafter. 

Understanding this bias can help individuals consciously detach themselves from such anchors to make more rational decisions.

The availability heuristic

Kahneman explains how our mind relies on the availability heuristic, a mental shortcut where the likelihood of events is estimated based on how readily they come to mind. 

This can skew our perception of reality, often causing us to overestimate the prevalence of memorable or dramatic events.

This is a widely-cited, occasionally mind-bending work from Daniel Kahneman that describes many of the human errors in thinking that he and others have discovered through their psychology research.

This book has influenced many, and can be considered one of the most significant books on psychology (along with books like Influence ), in recent years. Should be read by anyone looking to improve their own decision-making, regardless of field (indeed, most of the book is applicable throughout daily life).

Introduction

  • Valid intuitions develop when experts have learned to recognize familiar elements in a new situation and to act in a manner that is appropriate to it.
  • The essence of intuitive heuristics: when faced with a difficult question, we often answer an easier one instead, usually without noticing the substitution.
  • We are prone to overestimate how much we understand about the world and to underestimate the role of chance in events. Overconfidence is fed by the illusory certainty of hindsight. My views on this topic have been influenced by Nassim Taleb, the author of The Black Swan .

Part 1: Two Systems

Chapter 1: the characters of the story.

  • System 1 operates automatically and quickly, with little or no effort and no sense of voluntary control.
  • System 2 allocates attention to the effortful mental activities that demand it, including complex computations. The operations of System 2 are often associated with the subjective experience of agency, choice, and concentration.
  • I describe System 1 as effortlessly originating impressions and feelings that are the main sources of the explicit beliefs and deliberate choices of System 2. The automatic operations of System 1 generate surprisingly complex patterns of ideas, but only the slower System 2 can construct thoughts in an orderly series of steps.

In rough order of complexity, here are some examples of the automatic activities that are attributed to System 1:

  • Detect that one object is more distant than another.
  • Orient to the source of a sudden sound.

The highly diverse operations of System 2 have one feature in common: they require attention and are disrupted when attention is drawn away. Here are some examples:

  • Focus on the voice of a particular person in a crowded and noisy room.
  • Count the occurrences of the letter a in a page of text.
  • Check the validity of a complex logical argument.
  • It is the mark of effortful activities that they interfere with each other, which is why it is difficult or impossible to conduct several at once.
  • The gorilla study illustrates two important facts about our minds: we can be blind to the obvious , and we are also blind to our blindness.
  • One of the tasks of System 2 is to overcome the impulses of System 1. In other words, System 2 is in charge of self-control.
  • The best we can do is a compromise: learn to recognize situations in which mistakes are likely and try harder to avoid significant mistakes when the stakes are high.

Chapter 2: Attention and Effort

  • People, when engaged in a mental sprint, become effectively blind.
  • As you become skilled in a task, its demand for energy diminishes. Talent has similar effects.
  • One of the significant discoveries of cognitive psychologists in recent decades is that switching from one task to another is effortful, especially under time pressure.

Chapter 3: The Lazy Controller

  • It is now a well-established proposition that both self-control and cognitive effort are forms of mental work. Several psychological studies have shown that people who are simultaneously challenged by a demanding cognitive task and by a temptation are more likely to yield to the temptation.
  • People who are cognitively busy are also more likely to make selfish choices, use sexist language, and make superficial judgments in social situations. A few drinks have the same effect, as does a sleepless night.
  • Baumeister’s group has repeatedly found that an effort of will or self-control is tiring; if you have had to force yourself to do something, you are less willing or less able to exert self-control when the next challenge comes around. The phenomenon has been named ego depletion.
  • The evidence is persuasive: activities that impose high demands on System 2 require self-control, and the exertion of self-control is depleting and unpleasant. Unlike cognitive load, ego depletion is at least in part a loss of motivation. After exerting self-control in one task, you do not feel like making an effort in another, although you could do it if you really had to. In several experiments, people were able to resist the effects of ego depletion when given a strong incentive to do so.
  • Restoring glucose levels can have a counteracting effect to mental depletion.

Chapter 4: The Associative Machine

  • Priming effects take many forms. If the idea of EAT is currently on your mind (whether or not you are conscious of it), you will be quicker than usual to recognize the word SOUP when it is spoken in a whisper or presented in a blurry font. And of course you are primed not only for the idea of soup but also for a multitude of food-related ideas, including fork, hungry, fat, diet, and cookie.
  • Priming is not limited to concepts and words; your actions and emotions can be primed by events of which you are not even aware, including simple gestures.
  • Money seems to prime individualism: reluctance to be involved with, depend on, or accept demands from others.
  • Note: the effects of primes are robust but not necessarily large; likely only a few in a hundred voters will be affected.

Chapter 5: Cognitive Ease

  • Cognitive ease:  no threats, no major news, no need to redirect attention or mobilize effort.
  • Cognitive strain:  affected by both the current level of effort and the presence of unmet demands; requires increased mobilization of System 2.
  • Memories and thinking are subject to illusions, just as the eyes are.
  • Predictable illusions inevitable occur if a judgement is based on an impression of cognitive ease or strain.
  • A reliable way to make people believe in falsehoods is frequent repetition, because familiarity is not easily distinguished from truth.
  • If you want to make recipients believe something, general principle is to ease cognitive strain: make font legible, use high-quality paper to maximize contrasts, print in bright colours, use simple language, put things in verse (make them memorable), and if you quote, make sure it’s an easy name to pronounce.
  • Weird example: stocks with pronounceable tickers do better over time.
  • Mood also affects performance: happy moods dramatically improve accuracy. Good mood, intuition, creativity, gullibility and increased reliance on System 1 form a cluster.
  • At the other pole, sadness, vigilance, suspicion, an analytic approach, and increased effort also go together. A happy mood loosens the control of System 2 over performance: when in a good mood, people become more intuitive and more creative but also less vigilant and more prone to logical errors.

Chapter 6: Norms, Surprises, and Causes

  • We can detect departures from the norm (even small ones) within two-tenths of a second.

Chapter 7: A Machine for Jumping to Conclusions

  • Jumping to conclusions is efficient if the conclusions are likely to be correct and the costs of an occasional mistake acceptable, and if the jump saves much time and effort. Jumping to conclusions is risky when the situation is unfamiliar, the stakes are high, and there is no time to collect more information.

A Bias to Believe and Confirm

  • The operations of associative memory contribute to a general confirmation bias . When asked, "Is Sam friendly?" different instances of Sam’s behavior will come to mind than would if you had been asked "Is Sam unfriendly?" A deliberate search for confirming evidence, known as positive test strategy , is also how System 2 tests a hypothesis. Contrary to the rules of philosophers of science, who advise testing hypotheses by trying to refute them, people (and scientists, quite often) seek data that are likely to be compatible with the beliefs they currently hold.

Exaggerated Emotional Coherence (Halo Effect)

  • If you like the president’s politics, you probably like his voice and his appearance as well. The tendency to like (or dislike) everything about a person—including things you have not observed—is known as the halo effect.
  • To counter, you should decor relate error - in other words, to get useful information from multiple sources, make sure these sources are independent, then compare.
  • The principle of independent judgments (and decorrelated errors) has immediate applications for the conduct of meetings, an activity in which executives in organizations spend a great deal of their working days. A simple rule can help: before an issue is discussed, all members of the committee should be asked to write a very brief summary of their position. 

What You See is All There is (WYSIATI)

  • The measure of success for System 1 is the coherence of the story it manages to create. The amount and quality of the data on which the story is based are largely irrelevant. When information is scarce, which is a common occurrence, System 1 operates as a machine for jumping to conclusions.
  • WYSIATI: What you see is all there is.
  • WYSIATI helps explain some biases of judgement and choice, including:
  • Overconfidence: As the WYSIATI rule implies, neither the quantity nor the quality of the evidence counts for much in subjective confidence. The confidence that individuals have in their beliefs depends mostly on the quality of the story they can tell about what they see, even if they see little.
  • Framing effects : Different ways of presenting the same information often evoke different emotions. The statement that the odds of survival one month after surgery are 90% is more reassuring than the equivalent statement that mortality within one month of surgery is 10%.
  • Base-rate neglect : Recall Steve, the meek and tidy soul who is often believed to be a librarian. The personality description is salient and vivid, and although you surely know that there are more male farmers than male librarians, that statistical fact almost certainly did not come to your mind when you first considered the question.

Chapter 9: Answering an Easier Question

  • We often generate intuitive opinions on complex matters by substituting the target question with a related question that is easier to answer.
  • The present state of mind affects how people evaluate their happiness.
  • affect heuristic: in which people let their likes and dislikes determine their beliefs about the world. Your political preference determines the arguments that you find compelling.
  • If you like the current health policy, you believe its benefits are substantial and its costs more manageable than the costs of alternatives.

Part 2: Heuristics and Biases

Chapter 10: the law of small numbers.

  • A random event, by definition, does not lend itself to explanation, but collections of random events do behave in a highly regular fashion.
  • Large samples are more precise than small samples.
  • Small samples yield extreme results more often than large samples do.

A Bias of Confidence Over Doubt

  • The strong bias toward believing that small samples closely resemble the population from which they are drawn is also part of a larger story: we are prone to exaggerate the consistency and coherence of what we see.

Cause and Chance

  • Our predilection for causal thinking exposes us to serious mistakes in evaluating the randomness of truly random events.

Chapter 11: Anchoring Effects

  • The phenomenon we were studying is so common and so important in the everyday world that you should know its name: it is an anchoring effect . It occurs when people consider a particular value for an unknown quantity before estimating that quantity. What happens is one of the most reliable and robust results of experimental psychology: the estimates stay close to the number that people considered—hence the image of an anchor.

The Anchoring Index

  • The anchoring measure would be 100% for people who slavishly adopt the anchor as an estimate, and zero for people who are able to ignore the anchor altogether. The value of 55% that was observed in this example is typical. Similar values have been observed in numerous other problems.
  • Powerful anchoring effects are found in decisions that people make about money, such as when they choose how much to contribute to a cause.
  • In general, a strategy of deliberately "thinking the opposite" may be a good defense against anchoring effects, because it negates the biased recruitment of thoughts that produces these effects.

Chapter 12: The Science of Availability

  • The availability heuristic , like other heuristics of judgment, substitutes one question for another: you wish to estimate the size of a category or the frequency of an event, but you report an impression of the ease with which instances come to mind. Substitution of questions inevitably produces systematic errors.
  • You can discover how the heuristic leads to biases by following a simple procedure: list factors other than frequency that make it easy to come up with instances. Each factor in your list will be a potential source of bias.
  • Resisting this large collection of potential availability biases is possible, but tiresome. You must make the effort to reconsider your impressions and intuitions by asking such questions as, "Is our belief that thefts by teenagers are a major problem due to a few recent instances in our neighborhood?" or "Could it be that I feel no need to get a flu shot because none of my acquaintances got the flu last year?" Maintaining one’s vigilance against biases is a chore—but the chance to avoid a costly mistake is sometimes worth the effort.

The Psychology of Availability

For example, people:

  • believe that they use their bicycles less often after recalling many rather than few instances
  • are less confident in a choice when they are asked to produce more arguments to support it
  • are less confident that an event was avoidable after listing more ways it could have been avoided
  • are less impressed by a car after listing many of its advantages

The difficulty of coming up with more examples surprises people, and they subsequently change their judgement.

The following are some conditions in which people "go with the flow" and are affected more strongly by ease of retrieval than by the content they retrieved:

  • when they are engaged in another effortful task at the same time
  • when they are in a good mood because they just thought of a happy episode in their life
  • if they score low on a depression scale
  • if they are knowledgeable novices on the topic of the task, in contrast to true experts
  • when they score high on a scale of faith in intuition
  • if they are (or are made to feel) powerful

Chapter 13: Availability, Emotion, and Risk

  • The affect heuristic is an instance of substitution, in which the answer to an easy question (How do I feel about it?) serves as an answer to a much harder question (What do I think about it?).
  • Experts sometimes measure things more objectively, weighing total number of lives saved, or something similar, while many citizens will judge “good” and “bad” types of deaths.
  • An availability cascade is a self-sustaining chain of events, which may start from media reports of a relatively minor event and lead up to public panic and large-scale government action.
  • The Alar tale illustrates a basic limitation in the ability of our mind to deal with small risks: we either ignore them altogether or give them far too much weight—nothing in between.
  • In today’s world, terrorists are the most significant practitioners of the art of inducing availability cascades.
  • Psychology should inform the design of risk policies that combine the experts’ knowledge with the public’s emotions and intuitions.

Chapter 14: Tom W’s Specialty

  • The representativeness heuristic is involved when someone says "She will win the election; you can see she is a winner" or "He won’t go far as an academic; too many tattoos."

One sin of representativeness is an excessive willingness to predict the occurrence of unlikely (low base-rate) events. Here is an example: you see a person reading The New York Times on the New York subway. Which of the following is a better bet about the reading stranger?

  • She has a PhD.
  • She does not have a college degree.

Representativeness would tell you to bet on the PhD, but this is not necessarily wise. You should seriously consider the second alternative, because many more nongraduates than PhDs ride in New York subways.

The second sin of representativeness is insensitivity to the quality of evidence.

There is one thing you can do when you have doubts about the quality of the evidence: let your judgments of probability stay close to the base rate.

The essential keys to disciplined Bayesian reasoning can be simply summarized:

  • Anchor your judgment of the probability of an outcome on a plausible base rate.
  • Question the diagnosticity of your evidence.

Chapter 15: Linda: Less is More

  • When you specify a possible event in greater detail you can only lower its probability. The problem therefore sets up a conflict between the intuition of representativeness and the logic of probability.
  • conjunction fallacy:  when people judge a conjunction of two events to be more probable than one of the events in a direct comparison.
  • Representativeness belongs to a cluster of closely related basic assessments that are likely to be generated together. The most representative outcomes combine with the personality description to produce the most coherent stories. The most coherent stories are not necessarily the most probable, but they are plausible , and the notions of coherence, plausibility, and probability are easily confused by the unwary.

Chapter 17: Regression to the Mean

  • An important principle of skill training: rewards for improved performance work better than punishment of mistakes. This proposition is supported by much evidence from research on pigeons, rats, humans, and other animals.

Talent and Luck

  • My favourite equations:
  • success = talent + luck
  • great success = a little more talent + a lot of luck

Understanding Regression

  • The general rule is straightforward but has surprising consequences: whenever the correlation between two scores is imperfect, there will be regression to the mean.
  • If the correlation between the intelligence of spouses is less than perfect (and if men and women on average do not differ in intelligence), then it is a mathematical inevitability that highly intelligent women will be married to husbands who are on average less intelligent than they are (and vice versa, of course).

Chapter 18: Taming Intuitive Predictions

  • Some predictive judgements, like those made by engineers, rely largely on lookup tables, precise calculations, and explicit analyses of outcomes observed on similar occasions. Others involve intuition and System 1, in two main varieties:
  • Some intuitions draw primarily on skill and expertise acquired by repeated experience. The rapid and automatic judgements of chess masters, fire chiefs, and doctors illustrate these.
  • Others, which are sometimes subjectively indistinguishable from the first, arise from the operation of heuristics that often substitute an easy question for the harder one that was asked.
  • We are capable of rejecting information as irrelevant or false, but adjusting for smaller weaknesses in the evidence is not something that System 1 can do. As a result, intuitive predictions are almost completely insensitive to the actual predictive quality of the evidence.

A Correction for Inuitive Predictions

  • Recall that the correlation between two measures—in the present case reading age and GPA—is equal to the proportion of shared factors among their determinants. What is your best guess about that proportion? My most optimistic guess is about 30%. Assuming this estimate, we have all we need to produce an unbiased prediction. Here are the directions for how to get there in four simple steps:
  • Start with an estimate of average GPA.
  • Determine the GPA that matches your impression of the evidence.
  • Estimate the correlation between your evidence and GPA.
  • If the correlation is .30, move 30% of the distance from the average to the matching GPA.

Part 3: Overconfidence

Chapter 19: the illusion of understanding.

  • From Taleb: narrative fallacy : our tendency to reshape the past into coherent stories that shape our views of the world and expectations for the future.
  • As a result, we tend to overestimate skill, and underestimate luck.
  • Once humans adopt a new view of the world, we have difficulty recalling our old view, and how much we were surprised by past events.
  • Outcome bias : our tendency to put too much blame on decision makers for bad outcomes vs. good ones.
  • This both influences risk aversion, and disproportionately rewarding risky behaviour (the entrepreneur who gambles big and wins).
  • At best, a good CEO is about 10% better than random guessing.

Chapter 20: The Illusion of Validity

  • We often vastly overvalue the evidence at hand; discount the amount of evidence and its quality in favour of the better story, and follow the people we love and trust with no evidence in other cases.
  • The illusion of skill is maintained by powerful professional cultures.
  • Experts/pundits are rarely better (and often worse) than random chance, yet often believe at a much higher confidence level in their predictions.

Chapter 21: Intuitions vs. Formulas

A number of studies have concluded that algorithms are better than expert judgement, or at least as good.

The research suggests a surprising conclusion: to maximize predictive accuracy, final decisions should be left to formulas, especially in low-validity environments.

More recent research went further: formulas that assign equal weights to all the predictors are often superior, because they are not affected by accidents of sampling.

In a memorable example, Dawes showed that marital stability is well predicted by a formula:

  • frequency of lovemaking minus frequency of quarrels

The important conclusion from this research is that an algorithm that is constructed on the back of an envelope is often good enough to compete with an optimally weighted formula, and certainly good enough to outdo expert judgment.

Intuition can be useful, but only when applied systematically.

Interviewing

To implement a good interview procedure:

  • Select some traits required for success (six is a good number). Try to ensure they are independent.
  • Make a list of questions for each trait, and think about how you will score it from 1-5 (what would warrant a 1, what would make a 5).
  • Collect information as you go, assessing each trait in turn.
  • Then add up the scores at the end.

Chapter 22: Expert Intuition: When Can We Trust It?

When can we trust intuition/judgements? The answer comes from the two basic conditions for acquiring a skill:

  • an environment that is sufficiently regular to be predictable
  • an opportunity to learn these regularities through prolonged practice

When both these conditions are satisfied, intuitions are likely to be skilled.

Whether professionals have a chance to develop intuitive expertise depends essentially on the quality and speed of feedback, as well as on sufficient opportunity to practice.

Among medical specialties, anesthesiologists benefit from good feedback, because the effects of their actions are likely to be quickly evident. In contrast, radiologists obtain little information about the accuracy of the diagnoses they make and about the pathologies they fail to detect. Anesthesiologists are therefore in a better position to develop useful intuitive skills.

Chapter 23: The Outside View

The inside view : when we focus on our specific circumstances and search for evidence in our own experiences.

  • Also: when you fail to account for unknown unknowns.

The outside view : when you take into account a proper reference class/base rate.

Planning fallacy:  plans and forecasts that are unrealistically close to best-case scenarios could be improved by consulting the statistics of similar cases

Reference class forecasting : the treatment for the planning fallacy

The outside view is implemented by using a large database, which provides information on both plans and outcomes for hundreds of projects all over the world, and can be used to provide statistical information about the likely overruns of cost and time, and about the likely underperformance of projects of different types.

The forecasting method that Flyvbjerg applies is similar to the practices recommended for overcoming base-rate neglect:

  • Identify an appropriate reference class (kitchen renovations, large railway projects, etc.).
  • Obtain the statistics of the reference class (in terms of cost per mile of railway, or of the percentage by which expenditures exceeded budget). Use the statistics to generate a baseline prediction.
  • Use specific information about the case to adjust the baseline prediction, if there are particular reasons to expect the optimistic bias to be more or less pronounced in this project than in others of the same type.
  • Organizations face the challenge of controlling the tendency of executives competing for resources to present overly optimistic plans. A well-run organization will reward planners for precise execution and penalize them for failing to anticipate difficulties, and for failing to allow for difficulties that they could not have anticipated—the unknown unknowns.

Chapter 24: The Engine of Capitalism

Optimism bias : always viewing positive outcomes or angles of events

Danger: losing track of reality and underestimating the role of luck, as well as the risk involved.

To try and mitigate the optimism bias, you should a) be aware of likely biases and planning fallacies that can affect those who are predisposed to optimism, and,

Perform a premortem:

  • The procedure is simple: when the organization has almost come to an important decision but has not formally committed itself, Klein proposes gathering for a brief session a group of individuals who are knowledgeable about the decision. The premise of the session is a short speech: "Imagine that we are a year into the future. We implemented the plan as it now exists. The outcome was a disaster. Please take 5 to 10 minutes to write a brief history of that disaster."

Part 4: Choices

Chapter 25: bernoulli’s error.

  • theory-induced blindness : once you have accepted a theory and used it as a tool in your thinking, it is extraordinarily difficult to notice its flaws.

Chapter 26: Prospect Theory

  • It’s clear now that there are three cognitive features at the heart of prospect theory. They play an essential role in the evaluation of financial outcomes and are common to many automatic processes of perception, judgment, and emotion. They should be seen as operating characteristics of System 1.
  • Evaluation is relative to a neutral reference point, which is sometimes referred to as an "adaptation level."
  • For financial outcomes, the usual reference point is the status quo, but it can also be the outcome that you expect, or perhaps the outcome to which you feel entitled, for example, the raise or bonus that your colleagues receive.
  • Outcomes that are better than the reference points are gains. Below the reference point they are losses.
  • A principle of diminishing sensitivity applies to both sensory dimensions and the evaluation of changes of wealth.
  • The third principle is loss aversion. When directly compared or weighted against each other, losses loom larger than gains. This asymmetry between the power of positive and negative expectations or experiences has an evolutionary history. Organisms that treat threats as more urgent than opportunities have a better chance to survive and reproduce.

Loss Aversion

  • The “loss aversion ratio” has been estimated in several experiments and is usually in the range of 1.5 to 2.5.

Chapter 27: The Endowment Effect

  • Endowment effect : for certain goods, the status quo is preferred, particularly for goods that are not regularly traded or for goods intended “for use” - to be consumed or otherwise enjoyed.
  • Note: not present when owners view their goods as carriers of value for future exchanges.

Chapter 28: Bad Events

  • The brain responds quicker to bad words (war, crime) than happy words (peace, love).
  • If you are set to look for it, the asymmetric intensity of the motives to avoid losses and to achieve gains shows up almost everywhere. It is an ever-present feature of negotiations, especially of renegotiations of an existing contract, the typical situation in labor negotiations and in international discussions of trade or arms limitations. The existing terms define reference points, and a proposed change in any aspect of the agreement is inevitably viewed as a concession that one side makes to the other. Loss aversion creates an asymmetry that makes agreements difficult to reach. The concessions you make to me are my gains, but they are your losses; they cause you much more pain than they give me pleasure.

Chapter 29: The Fourfold Pattern

  • Whenever you form a global evaluation of a complex object—a car you may buy, your son-in-law, or an uncertain situation—you assign weights to its characteristics. This is simply a cumbersome way of saying that some characteristics influence your assessment more than others do.
  • The conclusion is straightforward: the decision weights that people assign to outcomes are not identical to the probabilities of these outcomes, contrary to the expectation principle. Improbable outcomes are overweighted—this is the possibility effect. Outcomes that are almost certain are underweighted relative to actual certainty.
  • When we looked at our choices for bad options, we quickly realized that we were just as risk seeking in the domain of losses as we were risk averse in the domain of gains.
  • Certainty effect : at high probabilities, we seek to avoid loss and therefore accept worse outcomes in exchange for certainty, and take high risk in exchange for possibility.
  • Possibility effect:  at low probabilities, we seek a large gain despite risk, and avoid risk despite a poor outcome.

Indeed, we identified two reasons for this effect.

  • First, there is diminishing sensitivity. The sure loss is very aversive because the reaction to a loss of $900 is more than 90% as intense as the reaction to a loss of $1,000.
  • The second factor may be even more powerful: the decision weight that corresponds to a probability of 90% is only about 71, much lower than the probability.
  • Many unfortunate human situations unfold in the top right cell. This is where people who face very bad options take desperate gambles, accepting a high probability of making things worse in exchange for a small hope of avoiding a large loss. Risk taking of this kind often turns manageable failures into disasters. 

Chapter 30: Rare Events

  • The probability of a rare event is most likely to be overestimated when the alternative is not fully specified.
  • Emotion and vividness influence fluency, availability, and judgments of probability—and thus account for our excessive response to the few rare events that we do not ignore.
  • Adding vivid details, salience and attention to a rare event will increase the weighting of an unlikely outcome.
  • When this doesn’t occur, we tend to neglect the rare event.

Chapter 31: Risk Policies

There were two ways of construing decisions i and ii:

  • narrow framing: a sequence of two simple decisions, considered separately
  • broad framing: a single comprehensive decision, with four options

Broad framing was obviously superior in this case. Indeed, it will be superior (or at least not inferior) in every case in which several decisions are to be contemplated together.

Decision makers who are prone to narrow framing construct a preference every time they face a risky choice. They would do better by having a risk policy that they routinely apply whenever a relevant problem arises. Familiar examples of risk policies are "always take the highest possible deductible when purchasing insurance" and "never buy extended warranties." A risk policy is a broad frame.

Chapter 32: Keeping Score

  • Agency problem : when the incentives of an agent are in conflict with the objectives of a larger group, such as when a manager continues investing in a project because he has backed it, when it’s in the firms best interest to cancel it.
  • Sunk-cost fallacy:  the decision to invest additional resources in a losing account, when better investments are available.
  • Disposition effect : the preference to end something on a positive, seen in investment when there is a much higher preference to sell winners and “end positive” than sell losers.
  • An instance of narrow framing . 
  • People expect to have stronger emotional reactions (including regret) to an outcome produced by action than to the same outcome when it is produced by inaction.
  • To inoculate against regret: be explicit about your anticipation of it, and consider it when making decisions. Also try and preclude hindsight bias (document your decision-making process).
  • Also know that people generally anticipate more regret than they will actually experience.

Chapter 33: Reversals

  • You should make sure to keep a broad frame when evaluating something; seeing cases in isolation is more likely to lead to a System 1 reaction.

Chapter 34: Frames and Reality

  • The framing of something influences the outcome to a great degree.
  • For example, your moral feelings are attached to frames, to descriptions of reality rather than to reality itself.
  • Another example: the best single predictor of whether or not people will donate their organs is the designation of the default option that will be adopted without having to check the box.

Part 5: Two Selves

Chapter 35: two selves.

  • Peak-end rule : The global retrospective rating was well predicted by the average of the level of pain reported at the worst moment of the experience and at its end.
  • We tend to overrate the end of an experience when remembering the whole.
  • Duration neglect : The duration of the procedure had no effect whatsoever on the ratings of total pain.
  • Generally: we tend to ignore the duration of an event when evaluating an experience.
  • Confusing experience with the memory of it is a compelling cognitive illusion—and it is the substitution that makes us believe a past experience can be ruined.

Chapter 37: Experienced Well-Being

  • One way to improve experience is to shift from passive leisure (TV watching) to active leisure, including socializing and exercising.
  • The second-best predictor of feelings of a day is whether a person did or did not have contacts with friends or relatives.
  • It is only a slight exaggeration to say that happiness is the experience of spending time with people you love and who love you.
  • Can money buy happiness? Being poor makes one miserable, being rich may enhance one’s life satisfaction, but does not (on average) improve experienced well-being.
  • Severe poverty amplifies the effect of other misfortunes of life.
  • The satiation level beyond which experienced well-being no longer increases was a household income of about $75,000 in high-cost areas (it could be less in areas where the cost of living is lower). The average increase of experienced well-being associated with incomes beyond that level was precisely zero.

Chapter 38: Thinking About Life

  • Experienced well-being is on average unaffected by marriage, not because marriage makes no difference to happiness but because it changes some aspects of life for the better and others for the worse (how one’s time is spent).
  • One reason for the low correlations between individuals’ circumstances and their satisfaction with life is that both experienced happiness and life satisfaction are largely determined by the genetics of temperament. A disposition for well-being is as heritable as height or intelligence, as demonstrated by studies of twins separated at birth. 
  • The importance that people attached to income at age 18 also anticipated their satisfaction with their income as adults.
  • The people who wanted money and got it were significantly more satisfied than average; those who wanted money and didn’t get it were significantly more dissatisfied. The same principle applies to other goals— one recipe for a dissatisfied adulthood is setting goals that are especially difficult to attain.
  • Measured by life satisfaction 20 years later, the least promising goal that a young person could have was "becoming accomplished in a performing art."

The focusing illusion :

  • Nothing in life is as important as you think it is when you are thinking about it.

Miswanting:  bad choices that arise from errors of affective forecasting; common example is the focusing illusion causing us overweight the effect of purchases on our future well-being.

Conclusions

Rationality

  • Rationality is logical coherence—reasonable or not. Econs are rational by this definition, but there is overwhelming evidence that Humans cannot be. An Econ would not be susceptible to priming, WYSIATI, narrow framing, the inside view, or preference reversals, which Humans cannot consistently avoid.
  • The definition of rationality as coherence is impossibly restrictive; it demands adherence to rules of logic that a finite mind is not able to implement.
  • The assumption that agents are rational provides the intellectual foundation for the libertarian approach to public policy: do not interfere with the individual’s right to choose, unless the choices harm others.
  • Thaler and Sunstein advocate a position of libertarian paternalism, in which the state and other institutions are allowed to nudge people to make decisions that serve their own long-term interests. The designation of joining a pension plan as the default option is an example of a nudge.

Two Systems

  • What can be done about biases? How can we improve judgments and decisions, both our own and those of the institutions that we serve and that serve us? The short answer is that little can be achieved without a considerable investment of effort. As I know from experience, System 1 is not readily educable. Except for some effects that I attribute mostly to age, my intuitive thinking is just as prone to overconfidence, extreme predictions, and the planning fallacy as it was before I made a study of these issues. I have improved only in my ability to recognize situations in which errors are likely: "This number will be an anchor…," "The decision could change if the problem is reframed…" And I have made much more progress in recognizing the errors of others than my own
  • The way to block errors that originate in System 1 is simple in principle: recognize the signs that you are in a cognitive minefield, slow down, and ask for reinforcement from System 2.
  • Organizations are better than individuals when it comes to avoiding errors, because they naturally think more slowly and have the power to impose orderly procedures. Organizations can institute and enforce the application of useful checklists, as well as more elaborate exercises, such as reference-class forecasting and the premortem.
  • At least in part by providing a distinctive vocabulary, organizations can also encourage a culture in which people watch out for one another as they approach minefields.
  • The corresponding stages in the production of decisions are the framing of the problem that is to be solved, the collection of relevant information leading to a decision, and reflection and review. An organization that seeks to improve its decision product should routinely look for efficiency improvements at each of these stages.
  • There is much to be done to improve decision making. One example out of many is the remarkable absence of systematic training for the essential skill of conducting efficient meetings.
  • Ultimately, a richer language is essential to the skill of constructive criticism.
  • Decision makers are sometimes better able to imagine the voices of present gossipers and future critics than to hear the hesitant voice of their own doubts. They will make better choices when they trust their critics to be sophisticated and fair, and when they expect their decision to be judged by how it was made, not only by how it turned out.

As you may suspect from the book title, Kahneman believes there are two symptoms that all humans use to do the bulk of their cognition.

They are referred to as System 1 and System 2 . It’s important to note that one system is not strictly better than the other, but there are situations where using one system over the other will lead to better results.

System 1 is the part of your brain that operates automatically, intuitively, and involuntarily. It's the system responsible for quick decision-making, such as calculating simple math problems, reading short sentences, and recognizing objects belonging to a specific category.

Lesson 2: Your Heuristics and Biases

Heuristics are mental shortcuts that allow you to make decisions and solve problems quickly, but sometimes at the cost of accuracy.

Biases are cognitive tendencies that can lead you to make systematic errors in your thinking.

Let's take a closer look at some specific heuristics and biases Kahneman discusses.

Availability Heuristic

The availability heuristic is the mental shortcut you take when you judge the probability of an event based on the ease with which instances come to mind.

For example, you might think plane crashes are more common than they actually are because they receive extensive media coverage. To mitigate the effects of this heuristic:

  • Recognize when you're relying on an availability heuristic
  • Consider more objective statistics or data when estimating probabilities

Representativeness Heuristic

The representativeness heuristic involves estimating the likelihood of an event or outcome based on its similarity to a stereotype or a known category.

When relying on the representativeness heuristic, you might make judgments solely based on appearances, rather than considering the broader context. To counteract this heuristic:

  • Take into account base rates or the actual likelihood of the event or outcome
  • Question the appropriateness of the stereotype you're using to judge a situation

Anchoring Effect

The anchoring effect occurs when you rely too heavily on an initial piece of information when making decisions.

This can lead to your estimates and judgments being biased towards that anchor, even if it's irrelevant or inaccurate. To reduce the impact of anchoring:

Writing a summary for Thinking, Fast and Slow was not easy.

Don’t get me wrong. Kahneman wrote a fantastic book that will help you improve your thinking and help you spot cognitive errors. I found it tough (worthwhile, but tough — like eating a salad you know you need to finish) to get through because it comes in at a very dense 500 pages.

If you’re reading this, it’s possible that you’re halfway through the book and just want someone to give you the gist of it. Or maybe you’re thinking about buying it.

Below are my 7 best takeaways from Thinking, Fast and Slow.

1. Your Brain Has Two Systems: System 1 (fast, intuitive) and System 2 (slow, analytical)

It’s a bizarre experience reading Thinking, Fast and Slow. Throughout the book, Kahneman asks you questions, knowing you will make a mistake while trying to answer them.

Here’s an example. Remember your immediate response as you read it.

If you’re like most people, you will have answered that the ball costs $0.10, which is incorrect (the answer is $0.05). What happened here?

System 1 — the fast, reptilian part of your brain that works on intuition —  made a snap, “good enough” answer.

It was only when System 2 — the slow, analytical part of your brain — was activated that you could understand why $0.05 is the correct answer.

Did your brain trick you? Are you bad at math? No, this is your brain working exactly as it is supposed to, and the reason for that is due to this concept of Cognitive Ease.

2. Cognitive Ease: Your Brain Wants To Take The Path of Least Resistance

Your brain HATES using energy. It wants to be at peace, it wants to feel relaxed.

It likes things that are familiar, it likes things that are simple to understand. It is drawn to things that make it feel like it’s in a safe environment.

This is Cognitive Ease.

Thousands of years ago, if you were in a familiar environment, the odds of your survival were much higher than if you were venturing into a new, unexplored jungle.

Therefore, your brain prefers familiar things. It prefers things that are easy to see, and simple to understand.

This has huge implications particularly when it comes to persuasion, marketing, and influence, because this means that Cognitive Ease can be induced!

Here’s Kahneman’s take on how to that works:

Cognitive Ease is a major reason why brand advertising exists. It’s why companies spend so much money on celebrity endorsements, ad campaigns and jingles. We know that consumers are satisficers that take the path of least resistance.

It’s also important for UX teams and CROs. By inducing Cognitive Ease, they are better able to lead users down a designed path.

Cognitive Ease is interesting because it can be taken advantage of by bad actors. Look at the chart above. Nowhere in there does it specify that the inputs are accurate or factual.

Indeed, Kahneman alludes to this in the book:

A reliable way to make people believe in falsehoods is frequent repetition, because familiarity is not easily distinguished from truth.
Authoritarian institutions and marketers have always known this fact. But it was psychologists who discovered that you do not have to repeat the entire statement of a fact or idea to make it appear true.

3. Question Substitution: When Faced With a Difficult Question, We Answer a Cognitively-Easier One

I found the idea of question substitution fascinating, because after I read about it, I immediately caught myself doing it all the time.

When we’re asked a question that is not Cognitively Easy, our brains immediately substitute the question to something that is easier to parse. Here are some examples:

The questions on the left require the activation of System 2. In order for you to provide a thoughtful answer that accurately represents your opinion, your brain will require time and energy.

For really important questions (performance reviews, immigration interviews) we are likely to consciously activate System 2. But for most things, we’ll instantaneously swap the difficult question for an easier one that System 1 can solve.

As a marketer, you should be wary of this any time you do customer interviews or run surveys.

4. WYSIATI (What You See Is All There Is)

Imagine a friend who has grown up in a country that has a problem with aggressive stray dogs. Also imagine that friend has been chased by these dogs, and has several friends who have been bitten by such dogs.

Now even when you bring your friend to a home that has the friendliest, cuddliest dogs in the world, it’s likely that his System 1 will immediately go into freeze, flight or (hopefully not) fight.

What he’s seen is “dogs = terrifying” and it will be very difficult to convince him otherwise. What he’s seen is all there is.

Our brains can confidently form conclusions based on limited evidence. We readily form opinions based on very little information, and then are confident in those opinions.

WYSIATI is one of the reasons why modern politics is so polarizing.

People take the cognitively easy route of listening to others on “their side”, until eventually the only information you’re exposed to is the ones that confirm your existing beliefs.

From a marketer’s perspective, WYSIATI justifies things like branding or awareness campaigns. If your target audience is researching the problem you solve, and you’ve made sure that your brand keeps popping up in Facebook groups, industry conversations, Quora answers … then you’re in a great position.

5. Framing and Choice Architecture: Your Opinion Can Change Depending On How You’re Asked

You’re sitting in the doctor’s office.

The doctor writes on some papers. He types on his keyboard. He looks at you and says you need major surgery.

He takes a breath, and says:

“The chance of you dying within one month is 10%.”

Take a second to think about how you felt reading that sentence.

Now imagine he instead said this:

“The odds of survival one month after surgery are 90%.”

How did you feel after reading that one?

It’s the exact same stats, but phrased differently. Most people feel that the second one is more reassuring, despite being factually equivalent to the first.

Framing is completely where copywriters earn their salary. Being able to identify an alternate, more attractive framing can make the difference between a winning campaign or a flame-out.

Take the following example, which one do you think would sell better?

6. Base Rate Neglect: When Judging Likelihood, We Overvalue What “Feels” Right and Undervalue Statistics

Think of “base rates” as the frequency of some event occurring, based on historical and observable data.

It can be anything: maybe the “base rate” of rain during a Saturday is 8.5%. The base rate of medical students who are still doctors at age 40 is 10%. The base rate of coffee shops that close down in the first year is 94%.

Now, here’s the rub: for some reason, our brains tend to ignore base rates when we judge the likelihood of something.

Librarian or Farmer?

Here’s an example from the book, where Kahneman asks you to guess someone’s job based on some info:

“Steve is very shy and withdrawn…he has a need for order, structure and has a passion for detail.”

Is Steve more likely to be librarian or a farmer?

If you’re like most people, you will have intuited that he is a librarian, because of the description; while ignoring the reality of base rates. That is, there are far more farmers than librarians in the world. Based on the short description given, it “feels right” that Steve is a librarian, yet it is statistically likely that he is a farmer.

Here’s another example that hopefully makes it more clear:

“John is very athletic and plays sports. He is a strong advocate of LGBTQ rights and attends rallies and parades.”

Which one is more likely?

a) John is a basketball player. b) John is a basketball player and is gay.

Hopefully you will have realized that there are more people in (a) than there are in (b). If your brain keeps telling you that the answer is (b), then it just proves the strength of Base Rate Neglect.

7. Sunk Costs: We Hate The Idea of “Wasting” What We’ve Already Put In

The Sunk Cost Fallacy is our tendency to follow through with an action — even when it no longer makes rational sense — because we are influenced by what we’ve already invested in it.

Imagine that your boss asks you to attend a 3-day marketing conference in a different country. You research the conference and get excited — speakers look good. Topics look interesting. You are enthusiastic to go.

Fast forward to Day 2 of the conference. Day 1 was a dud: the speakers were mediocre and networking has been a bust. Day 2 looks like more of the same.

Do you feel like you have to attend the rest of the conference?

Most people will say yes, because of the expense and time cost that has already been invested. You feel like you have to “get the most” out of what has been paid, and you feel additional pressure because of your boss.

And so you stay for the whole thing, ignoring the opportunity cost of your time — maybe you could’ve been working on other projects; perhaps you could’ve instead networked outside of the conference in that city; perhaps you could’ve done any other thing that would’ve been a better return on your time.

The Sunk Cost Fallacy is so deeply ingrained in our thinking that it has the ability to influence major company-wide decisions, and impacts things like resource allocation (imagine a marketing campaign that just isn’t working — let me just do another push!)

As a marketer, your job fundamentally involves resource allocation and decision-making: where do you spend time and money? Which campaign deserves attention? What opportunities is everyone missing because of narrow framing?

Anything that helps you improve your decision making abilities & reduce unforced errors in thinking is usually a great use of time.

Thinking, Fast and Slow is one of the best books for marketers, but just prep yourself. It’s a dense read, which discourages many from getting the most value from the book. Skim freely and skip chapters liberally.

1: About two minds: our behavior is controlled by two different systems – one automatic and the other deliberate

There's a fascinating play going on in our minds, a movie-like story between two characters with lots of twists, drama, and contradictions. Two characters include System 1 – instinctive, automatic and emotional; and System 2 – mature, slow, and calculated. When confronted, their interactions determine how we think, make judgments, decide, and act.

System 1 is the part of the brain that acts intuitively and suddenly, often without conscious control. You can experience this system in action when you hear a very loud and sudden sound. What you will do? You can immediately and automatically redirect your attention to it. It's System 1.

This system is the legacy of millions of years of evolution: the vital advantages lie in the ability to make quick decisions and judgments.

System 2 is what we mean when we imagine the part of the brain responsible for an individual's decision-making, reasoning, and beliefs. It controls conscious activities of the mind such as self-control, choice, and intentional focus.

For example, imagine you are looking for a girl in the crowd. Your mind will deliberately focus on the task: it remembers the person's features or whatever helps determine her coordinates. This ability eliminates distractions, helping you to ignore irrelevant subjects. If you maintain this deliberate focus, you can spot her in a few minutes, whereas if you are distracted you will have a hard time finding her. As you will see in the next section, the relationship between these two systems determines how we behave.

2: The system is lazy: inertia can lead to mistakes and affect intelligence

To see how the two systems work, try solving the following famous stick-and-ball problem:

A bat and ball costs $1.10. The bat is $1 more expensive than the ball. So how much does the ball cost?

The price that comes to mind, $0.10 is the result of 1 emotional and automated system, and it's working! Take a few seconds and try to solve this problem.

Do you see your error? The correct answer is $0.05.

What just happened is your impulsive System 1 takes over and automatically responds by relying on gut feelings. But it responds too fast.

Normally, when faced with an unclear situation, System 1 would call System 2 to solve the problem, but in the bat and ball problem, System 1 was fooled. It looks at the problem too simple, and mistakenly believes it can be mastered.

The stick-and-ball problem exposes our instinct for lazy mental labor. When the brain is active, we usually use only the minimum amount of energy that is sufficient for that task. This is also known as the law of least effort. Because reviewing answers with System 2 uses more energy, the mind won't do so when it thinks just using System 1 is enough.

Laziness is harmful because the practice of System 2 is such an important part of human intelligence. Research shows that doing System 2 work requires focus and self-control, making us smarter. The stick-and-ball problem illustrates this, because our minds could have double-checked our answers using System 2 and thus avoid the common error.

If we are lazy and lazy to use System 2, our mind will limit its intelligent power.

3: Autopilot: why we don't always consciously control our thoughts and actions.

What comes to mind when you see the letters “SO_P” ? Maybe nothing. But what if you see the word “EAT” first? Now, when you look at the word “SO_P” again, you should be able to complete it as “SOUP.” This process is also known as   priming .

We are baited when we come across a word, concept, or event that reminds us of related words and concepts. If you looked at the word “SHOWER” instead of the word “EAT” above, you would probably picture the word “SOAP”.

This dropping phenomenon affects not only the way we think but also the way we act. Just as your mind is affected when it hears certain words and concepts, so can your body. A prime example of this phenomenon can be found in a study in which participants were baited by words associated with old age, such as “Florida” and “wrinkles”, whose responses slowed down. than usual.

Surprisingly, we are completely unaware that our thoughts and actions are affected by the release of bait.

So baiting shows that, contrary to popular belief, we can't always consciously control our actions, judgments and choices. Instead we are always guided by certain social and cultural conditions.

For example, research done by Kathleen Vohs proves that just thinking about money makes people live more personally. People who are preyed on by the concept of money – for example, by looking at pictures of money – act independently and are less willing to get involved, depend on, or accept requests from others. One implication from Vohns' research is that living in a society filled with monetary stimuli might make people more selfish.

Baiting, like other social factors, can influence an individual's thoughts and therefore choices, judgments, and behaviors – and they are reflected back into culture and influence social patterns. that we live in.

4: Quick judgment: How quickly the mind makes choices, even when it doesn't yet have enough information to make a rational decision.

Imagine you meet someone named Ben at a party and find him very approachable. Then when someone asks if you know anyone who wants to donate to charity. You think of Ben, even though the only thing you know about him is how friendly he is.

In other words, you like one part of Ben's personality, and so you think you like everything else about him. We often love or hate a person even though we know very little about them.

The mind's tendency to simplify things without enough information often leads to judgmental errors. This phenomenon is called exaggerated emotional consistency, also known as the halo effect : a positive feeling about Ben's closeness causes you to place an aura on Ben, including when you don't understand what he is.

But this is not the only way our minds take shortcuts when making judgments.

People also   have confirmation bias , the tendency to agree with information that supports their previous beliefs, as well as to accept whatever fits it.

We can observe this phenomenon when we ask, "Is James friendly?". Studies show that, when faced with this kind of question with no other information, it's easy to see James as a friendly person - because the mind automatically agrees with the suggested idea.

The halo effect and confirmation bias happen at the same time because our minds rush to make quick judgments. But this often leads to mistakes, because we don't always have enough data to make an accurate judgment. Our minds rely on fallible suggestions and over-simplify things to fill gaps in the data, leading us to potentially erroneous conclusions.

Like dropping bait, these cognitive phenomena can occur completely unconsciously and influence our choices, judgments, and actions.

5: Reflection: How quickly the mind uses shortcuts to make decisions

We often find ourselves in situations where we have to make quick judgments. To do this, our minds have developed little shortcuts to help us instantly make sense of our surroundings. These are called   heuristics .

For the most part, these processes are very useful, but the problem is that our minds often overuse them. Applying these rules in inappropriate situations can lead to mistakes. To better understand what heuristics are and the errors that follow, we can consider two types:   the substitution heuristic  and   the availability heuristic .

Alternative heuristics  occurs when we answer an easier question than the one actually asked.  

For example, try this question: “A woman is running for sheriff. How successful will she be in that ministry?” We automatically replace the question we should have answered with an easier one, like, “Does she look like someone who would make a good sheriff?” This experimentation means that instead of researching a candidate's profile and policies, we are simply asking ourselves the much easier question of whether this woman fits our mental image of a candidate. good sheriff or not.

Unfortunately, if she doesn't fit that mental image, we'll throw her out – even though she has years of crime fighting experience, which makes her a good candidate.

Next comes the   built-in heuristics , which is when you think something is more likely to happen just because you hear about it more often, or find it easier to remember. For example, strokes cause more deaths than traffic accidents, but one study found that 80% of respondents thought more people died from traffic accidents.

That's because we hear more about these deaths in the media, and because they leave a deeper impression; We remember deaths from a horrible accident more easily than from a stroke, and so we are more likely to react inappropriately to these dangers.

6: Hate numbers: Why we struggle to understand statistics and make avoidable mistakes just because of it.

How can you predict this will happen or not?

One effective way is to remember   the base rate . It refers to the base rate in the statistic, on which the other statistics depend. For example, imagine a large taxi company has 20% yellow cars and 80% red cars. That is, the base rate for yellow taxis is 20% and for red cars is 80%. If you call a car and want to guess its color, remember the base scale and you will make a relatively accurate prediction.

So one should always keep the base rate in mind when predicting an event, but unfortunately this is not usually the case. In fact, forgetting about the base rate is extremely common.

One of the reasons we forget about our base rate is that we focus on what we expect rather than what is most likely to happen. For example, imagine the taxis above: If you see five red cars passing by, you may begin to feel the high probability that the next one will be red. But no matter how many cars of any color pass, the probability that the next car is red is still about 80% – and if we remember the base rate, we will realize this. But instead, we often focus on what we expect to see, a yellow car, and so it's easy to make mistakes.

Neglecting the base rate is a common error related to human problems when dealing with data. We often forget that everything will   regress to the average . It means admitting that all situations have a mean, and that fluctuations from the mean will eventually return to equilibrium.

For example, if a football striker who scores 5 goals a month on average, scores 10 goals in September, her coach will be delighted, but if the rest of the year she only scores 5 goals 1 month, the coach would criticize her for not keeping her form. However, she does not deserve to be criticized because she is just regressing to the mean!

7: Past Evil: Why we remember events from hindsight and not from experience.

Our minds don't record experiences in a straight line. We have two machines that record different situations.

The first is   the experiential self , recording how you feel in the present. It asks, “How am I feeling right now?”

Second, is   the flashback being , which records the entire event that happened. It asks, “How do I feel in general?”

The experiencing  self is a more accurate description of what happened, because how we feel at that moment is the most accurate. But   the flashback ontology  is not as accurate because it records only some of the salient memories after the event is over.

There are two reasons why memory dominates experience. The first cause is called   duration neglect , where we forget the whole course of an event to remember a small part of it. That's because   of the peak-end rule , where we often overemphasize what happens at the end of an event.

For visualization, consider an experiment that recorded people's memories of a painful colonoscopy. Before the endoscopy, people were divided into two groups: one group had a very long colonoscopy, while the other group had a faster endoscopy, but the pain gradually increased at the end.

You would think the most uncomfortable patients were those who had a longer colonoscopy, because they had to endure the pain longer. That's exactly how they felt at the time. During an endoscopy, when asked about pain, the experience self will give the correct answer: whoever has to have the colonoscopy longer will feel worse. However, in the end, when the flashback self took over, those who had a quick colonoscopy with a more painful ending felt the worst. This survey provides a clear example of   the effects of ignoring time  and   the law of peaks and troughs , and our inaccurate memories.

8: Willpower: how regulating the focus of the mind can have a dramatic effect on our thoughts and behavior

Our minds use different levels of energy depending on the type of work. When there is no need to call for attention and little energy, we are in a state   of cognitive ease .

However, when attention is needed, the mind uses more energy and enters a   cognitive strain.

These changes in the brain's energy levels have a dramatic effect on the way we act. When the mind is at ease, the emotional System 1 dominates the mind, and the logical and energy-intensive System 2 weakens. This means we'll be more intuitive, creative, and happy to make decisions, but we're also more likely to make mistakes.

When our minds are tense, our awareness is heightened, and System 2 takes over. System 2 tends to double-check our judgments than System 1, so even though we may be less creative, we will make fewer mistakes. You can deliberately influence the amount of energy the mind uses to choose which system to master for each task. For example, if you want your message to be more persuasive, try switching to a relaxed state of mind.

One way to do this is to be exposed to repetitive information over and over again. If information is repeated to us, or easier to remember, it becomes more persuasive. That's because the mind has changed to respond more positively when exposed to the same message over and over again. When we see something that is familiar to us, we enter a relaxed state of mind.

On the other hand, a stressed mind will help us succeed in jobs involving numbers. We can move into this state by being exposed to information that is presented in a confusing way, for example in a difficult-to-read font. Then the mind will have to pay more attention and increase energy levels to understand the problem, and so we are less likely to give up.

9: Take a risk: how probabilities are presented affects how we assess risk

The way we evaluate ideas and approach problems is heavily influenced by how they are presented. Changing just one small detail or emphasizing a statement or question can dramatically change our response.

A good example can be found in the way we assess risk:

You might think that once we could determine the probability of a risk, everyone would approach it the same way. However, that is not the case. Even with carefully calculated possibilities, simply changing the wording of a number can change the way we approach it.

For example, people will find a rare event more likely to happen than it is expressed in terms of relative frequency rather than statistical probability.

In an example also known as the Mr. Experiment. Jones, two groups of psychiatrists were consulted about whether it was safe to release Mr. Jones from a psychiatric hospital at this time. One group was told that patients like Mr Jones had a “10% chance of assaulting others,” and a second group was told that “out of 100 patients like Mr Jones, 10 are likely to commit violence.” As a result, group 2 had twice as many people refusing to release people as group 1.

Our focus is also distracted from statistically relevant information, known as   denominator neglect . This happens when we ignore obvious statistics in favor of vivid mental images that can influence our decisions.

For example the following two sentences: “This drug will protect children from disease X but has 0.001% permanent disfigurement” with “1 in 100,000 children taking this medicine will be permanently disfigured.” Even though the meaning of the two sentences is the same, the latter conjures up the image of a deformed baby and has a greater impact, and that is why it makes us hesitate to take this drug.

10: Not Robots: Why Humans Don't Make Decisions Based on Reasoning

How do individuals make choices?

A group of influential economists have long argued that people make decisions based on rational reasoning. They argue that everyone chooses according to utility theory, asserting that when individuals make decisions, they only look at rational data and choose the option with the greatest total utility.

For example, utility theory would make the following sentence: if you prefer oranges to kiwis, you would choose a 10% chance of getting oranges over a 10% chance of getting kiwis.

Obviously isn't it?

The most influential group of economists in the field is concentrated at the Chicago School of Economics, and their most famous scholar is Milton Friedman. Using utility theory, the Chicago School held that individuals in the market were super-rational decision makers, what the economist Richard Thaler and lawyer Cass Sunstein would later call Econs. . With the Merchant, each individual behaves exactly the same, valuing goods and services based on their rational needs. Moreover, economic people also evaluate their assets rationally, only interested in the benefit it brings them.

So imagine two people, John and Jenny, both have a combined net worth of $5 million. According to utility theory, since they have the same amount of money, they will be equally happy.

But what if we complicate matters a little more? Let's say the $5 million fortune is the result of a day of gambling, and the two have different starting points: John initially has only $1 million and ends up getting 5 times as much, whereas Jenny starts with 9 million dollars and the loss is only 5 million dollars.

Do you still think John and Jenny are equally happy with $5 million? Obviously, we judge things   by more than mere utility .

As we will see in the next section, because people do not view utility as rationally as utility theory asserts, we can make strange and irrational decisions.

11: Intuition: why instead of making decisions based on rational considerations, we are often swayed by emotional factors.

Kahneman's prospect theory challenges utility theory by showing that when we make choices, we don't always act in the most rational way.

Imagine two scenarios: In case 1, you are given $1000 and have to choose between: 100% get $500 or bet 50/50 to win another $1000. In case 2 you are given $2000 and have to choose between : 100% lose $500 or bet 50/50 lose $1000.

If we were to decide only rationally, you would make the same choice in both cases. But that's not the case. In the first example, most people would take the safe bet of $500, but in case 2, most people risk it.

Prospect theory helps to explain why there is a difference. It highlights at least two reasons why we don't act rationally. Both refer to our fear of loss – in fact, we are more afraid of losing than of receiving a profit.

The first reason is that we value things based on   reference points . Starting at $1000 or $2000 in either scenario changes our ability to gamble, because the starting point affects how we value our positions. The reference point in case 1 is $1000 and $2000 in case 2, meaning if there is $1500 left, it is a profit on TH1 but a loss in TH2. Even with obvious illogical reasoning (because you have $1500 anyway), we understand value through the starting point as well as the objective value at that point.

Second, we are influenced by   the diminishing sensitivity principle : our perceived value may differ from what it is. For example, losing money from $1000 to $900 doesn't feel as bad as losing money from $200 to $100, regardless of the amount lost. Similarly in our example, the value of the perceived loss when losing money from $1500 to $1000 will be greater than the loss from $2000 to $1500.

12: False images: why psychology builds a complete picture to explain the world, but they often lead to overconfidence and falsehoods.

To understand situations, our minds use   cognitive coherence ; We construct complete mental images to explain ideas and concepts. For example, we have a lot of images in the brain about the weather. If we have a picture of summer weather, maybe a picture of a bright, hot sun makes us sweat profusely.

In addition to helping us understand things, we also rely on these images to make decisions.

When making decisions, we refer to these images and build assumptions and conclusions based on them. For example, if we want to know what to wear in the summer, we base our decisions on the image in our mind of summer.

The problem is that we trust these images too much. Even if the statistics and available data disprove these mental pictures, we will still let it guide us. The weatherman might think it's going to be cold today, but you're still in shorts and a t-shirt, as your mind-blowing summer picture tells you. So you can huddle outdoors.

We are overconfident in false mental images. But there are ways to overcome this problem and make better predictions.

One way to avoid errors is to make use of   reference class forecasting. Instead of making judgments based on general mental images, use historical data for more accurate predictions. For example, think about times when you've been out in the summer and it's cold. What did you wear then?

In addition, you can create a  long-term risk policy  , to plan for specific measures in case of both standard and false forecasts. Through preparation and defense, you can rely on evidence instead of mental images and make more accurate forecasts. In the case of our weather, this means bringing a sweater just to be sure.

13: Key message

Thinking fast and slow shows us that our mind is composed of two systems. System 1 works instinctively and requires very little effort; System 2 works more meticulously and requires more concentration. Our thoughts and actions change depending on which system is controlling the brain at the time.

When you look at a picture, you immediately come up with quick conclusions about the events happening in the picture. You combine seeing and intuitive thinking to come up with your experiences from the picture.

You get the mood in the picture; you can make predictions about what may happen next in the picture, other pictures may show the location, time of day that the picture was taken, the gender of people in the picture, etc. All these conclusions come to you effortlessly and automatically. You do not intend to gather the information neither did you tire from making the conclusions. You deduce all those details from an instance of fast thinking.

When looking at a mathematical problem, for example, a multiplication problem, you get immediate thoughts about it. You think to yourself that you can solve it, and you get vague intuitive knowledge about possible answers, but you immediately experience slow thinking when you start addressing it.

You retrieve the mathematical formulas you learned in school from your memory and implement them. As you try to solve the problem, you put in the effort, and you experience tensions in your body. You solve the problem in a slow thought process. The above scenarios show the working of two systems in the mind that psychologists have so much interest in:

System 1 – The mind operates automatically and quickly with minimal effort and limited sense of voluntary actions. System 2 – The mind pays attention to the mental activities that require much effort. The events are in constant demand of the attention and effort. These operations are associated with the experiences of agency, choice, and concentration.

System 1 is the originating impressions that are used in the beliefs and deliberate choices that are made in System 2.

System 1 instantaneously provides complex patterns and ideas that are taken up by the slower System 2 which transforms them from thoughts to orderly actions. Both systems have their abilities, limitations, and functions. The automatic functions linked with System 1 require very little thought into accomplishing them. Some of them include: Reading facial expressions of a person Understanding simple statements Differentiating the distances of two objects Reading words on large billboards System 2 functions require much thought and effort to accomplish. They consist of more complex situations such as: Focusing on a specific voice in a noisy room Comparing the prices of two items Telling someone your phone number Activities in System 1 are effortless and involuntary while activities in System 2 require attention and effort.

If you learn how to control both systems to work seamlessly together, you will achieve efficiency in your life.

Both System 1 and System 2, function whenever were are awake. System 1 continuously generates ideas for System 2. If the feelings, impressions intentions and intuitions generated by System 1 are accepted by System 2, they are constructed into beliefs and voluntary actions.

System 2 also has a function of stepping up in aid of System 1 whenever a problem that System 1 can’t handle arises. When you encounter a multiplication problem, it becomes challenging for System 1 to handle. System 2 starts acting immediately. It starts looking for solutions to the problem and in most cases; through memory. Both systems are continually dividing labor efficiently; minimizing efforts and increasing the performance of the mind.

The efficiency in the division of labor is made possible by the very effective System 1. It is very accurate in its operations, but it does not lack some flaws. One of its weaknesses is that; it tends to answer easy and unasked questions using its minimal understanding of logic and statistics. Second, it cannot be turned off, and it does not require your effort hence it is continuously working even when you don’t want it to. For example, if a word is written in your line of view, System 1 automatically reads even without your consent unless in situations where your full concentration is focused elsewhere.

Conflicts between the automatic and unintentional reactions are frequent in our daily lives. For example, you have experienced the challenge of forcing yourself to read a book you’re bored with; you always find yourself going back to the point at which you lost the concentration. The conflicts are brought about by one of the functions of system two which is self-control; to overcome the influences of System 1.

Cognitive illusions cause confusion or conflicts between System 1 and System 2. System 1 causes errors (biases) of intuitive thought that are often difficult to prevent. The biases cannot always be avoided because System 2 may not have adequate knowledge of the errors. We can overcome these illusions and errors only through effective monitoring and enhanced activities of System 2.

Are you a victim of always jumping to conclusions? You cannot switch it off, but you can control it.

System 1 constantly jumps to conclusions. This characteristic can be efficient if the outcomes are likely to be correct with minimal and less costly mistakes. The efficiency of jumping to conclusions can also look at as saving time and effort. It gets risky if the situation is unfamiliar, information gathered within the limited time is not sufficient. Intuitive errors as probable in these cases unless System 2 intervenes.

System 1 jumps to conclusions when the context of the situation determines the interpretation of the various elements. For example, the letter “I” may be seen as looking like the number “1” if it is in the context of numbers and “1” looked at as “I” when in the context of letters. System 1 jumps to one conclusion without keeping track of alternative conclusions. After the first conclusion is made, it automatically disposes of all the other possible alternatives. If it sees “I” as a number, it disposes of the other possibility of it being a letter.

System 2 maintains in the mind, all alternatives and conflicting interpretations that require effort. Due to these characteristics of System 2, it is filled with doubt and uncertainties. System 1 takes up the initial attempt to believe a statement to understand it. It constructs the most appropriate and close interpretations of the situation. A statement that makes no sense evokes belief at first before it is reconstructed.

After System 1 creates the best possible interpretations, System 2 takes up the function of evaluating the situation to decide whether to continue believing the situation or to unbelieve it. When System 2 is unavailable due to other mind engagements, we tend to believe almost anything. System 1 makes us biased and gullible.

System 2 is usually doubting, busy and often lazy especially when we are physically lazy. That is why adverts are often presented to us when we are tired from working the whole day. System 2 is tired and does not put much attention to determine whether the advert is genuine or not. System 1 takes in the advert, and we readily believe it.

About Daniel Kahneman

Daniel Kahneman is Professor of Psychology and Public Affairs Emeritus at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, the Eugene Higgins Professor of Psychology Emeritus at Princeton University, and a fellow of the Center for Rationality at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Dr. Kahneman is a member of the National Academy of Science, the Philosophical Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is also a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, the Society of Experimental Psychologists, and the Econometric Society. In 2015, The Economist listed him as the seventh most influential economist in the world. In 2002, Kahneman was also awarded a Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences.

Thinking, Fast and Slow provides an outline of the two most common approaches our brains utilize. Like a computer, our brain is built of systems. System 1 is fast, intuitive, and emotional. Daniel Kahneman encourages us to move away from our reliance on this system. System 1 is the most common source of mistakes and stagnation. In comparison, system 2 is a slower, more deliberate, and logical thought process. Kahneman recommends tapping into this system more frequently. As well as this advice, Kahneman provides guidance on how and why we make our decisions.

StoryShot #1: System 1 Is Innate

There are two systems associated with our thought processes. For each system, Kahneman outlines the primary functions and the decision making processes associated with each system.

System 1 includes all capabilities that are innate and generally shared with similar creatures within the animal kingdom. For example, each of us is born with an innate ability to recognize objects, orient our attention to important stimuli, and fear things linked to death or disease. System 1 also deals with mental activities that have become near-innate by becoming faster and more automatic. These activities generally move into system 1 because of prolonged practice. Certain pieces of knowledge will be automatic for you. For example, you do not even have to think about what the capital of England is. Over time, you have built an automatic association with the question, ‘What is the capital of England?’ As well as intuitive knowledge, system 1 also deals with learned skills, such as reading a book, riding a bike and how to act in common social situations. 

There are also certain actions that are generally in system 1 but can also fall into system 2. This overlap occurs if you are making a deliberate effort to engage with that action. For example, chewing will generally fall into system 1. That said, suppose you become aware that you should be chewing your food more than you had been. In that case, some of your chewing behaviors will be shifted into the effortful system 2. 

Attention is often associated with both systems 1 and 2. They work in tandem. For example, system 1 will be driving your immediate involuntary reaction to a loud sound. Your system 2 will then take over and offer voluntary attention to this sound and logical reasoning about the sound’s cause.

System 1 is a filter by which you interpret your experiences. It is the system you use for making intuitive decisions. So, it is undoubtedly the oldest brain system as it is evolutionarily primitive. System 1 is also unconscious and impulse-driven. Although you might feel system 1 is not having a significant impact on your life, it influences many of your choices and judgments. 

StoryShot #2: System 2 Can Control Parts of System 1

System 2 comprises a range of activities. But each of these activities requires attention and is disrupted when attention is drawn away. Without attention, your performance in these activities will diminish. Significantly, system 2 can change the way system 1 works. For example, detection is generally an act of system 1. You can set yourself, via system 2, to search for a specific person in a crowd. This priming by system 2 allows your system 1 to perform better, meaning you are more likely to find the specific person in the crowd. This is the same process we utilize when we are completing a word search.

Because system 2 activities require attention, they are generally more effortful than system 1 activities. It is also challenging to simultaneously carry out more than one system 2 activity. The only tasks that can be simultaneously completed fall on the lower limits of effort; for example, holding a conversation while driving. That said, it is not wise to hold a conversation while overtaking a truck on a narrow road. Essentially, the more attention a task requires, the less viable it is to be completing another system 2 task simultaneously.

System 2 is younger, having developed in the last several thousand years. System 2 has become increasingly important as we adapt to modernization and shifting priorities. Most of the second system’s operations require conscious attention, such as giving someone your phone number. The operations of system 2 are often associated with the subjective experience of agency, choice, and concentration. When we think of ourselves, we identify with System 2. It is the conscious, reasoning self that has beliefs, makes choices, and decides what to think about and what to do. 

StoryShot #3: The Two Systems Support Each Other

Based on the two systems’ descriptions, it could become easy to imagine that the systems occur one after the other. Kahneman explains that these two systems are actually integrated and mutually supportive. So, almost all tasks are a mix of both systems and are complementary. For example, emotions (system 1) are crucial in adopting logical reasoning (system 2). Emotions make our decision-making more meaningful and effective.

Another example of the two systems working in tandem is when we are playing sport. Certain parts of the sport will be automatic actions. Consider a game of tennis. Tennis will utilize running, which is an innate skill in humans and is controlled by system 1. Hitting a ball can also become a system 1 activity through practice. That said, there will always be specific strokes or tactical decisions that will require your system 2. So, both systems are complementary to each other as you play a sport, such as tennis. 

Issues can arise when people over-rely on their system 1, as it requires less effort. Additional issues are associated with activities that are out of your routine. This is when systems 1 and 2 will become conflicted. 

StoryShot #4: Heuristics As Mental Shortcuts

The second part of the book introduces the concept of heuristics. Heuristics are mental shortcuts we create as we make decisions. We are always seeking to solve problems with the greatest efficiency. So, heuristics are highly beneficial for conserving energy throughout our everyday lives. For example, our heuristics help us to automatically apply previous knowledge to slightly different circumstances. Although heuristics can be positive, it is also essential to consider that heuristics are the source of prejudice. For example, you may have one negative experience with a person from a specific ethnic group. If you rely solely on your heuristics, you might stereotype other people from the same ethnic group. Heuristics can also cause cognitive biases, systemic errors in thinking, bad decisions, or misinterpretation of events.

StoryShot #5: The Biases We Create in Our Own Minds

Kahneman introduces eight common biases and heuristics that can lead to poor decision making:

  • The law of small numbers : This law shows our strongly biased belief of smaller numbers or samples resembling the population from which they come. People underestimate the variability in small samples. To put it another way, people overestimate what a small study can achieve. Let’s say a drug is successful in 80% of patients. How many patients will respond if five are treated? In reality, out of a sample of 5, there’s only a 41% chance that exactly four people will respond.
  • Anchoring : When people make choices, they tend to depend more heavily on pre-existing information or the first information they come across. This is known as anchoring bias. If you first see a T-shirt that costs $1,200 and then see a second one that costs $100, you’re more likely to dismiss the second shirt. If you just saw the second shirt, which costs $100, you wouldn’t consider it cheap. The anchor – the first price you saw – had an undue impact on your decision.
  • Priming : Our minds work by making associations between words and items. Therefore, we are susceptible to priming. A common association can be invoked by anything and lead us in a particular direction with our decisions. Kahneman explains that priming is the basis for nudges and advertising using positive imagery. For example, Nike primes for feelings of exercise and achievement. When starting a new sport or wanting to maintain their fitness, consumers are likely to think of Nike products. Nike supports pro athletes and uses slogans like “Just Do It” to demonstrate the athletes’ success and perseverance. Here’s another example: A restaurant owner that has too much Italian wine in stock, can prime their customers to buy this sort of wine by playing Italian music in the background.
  • Cognitive ease : Whatever is easier for System 2 is more likely to be believed. Ease arises from idea repetition, clear display, a primed idea, and even one’s own good mood. It turns out that even the repetition of a falsehood can lead people to accept it, despite knowing it’s untrue, since the concept becomes familiar and is cognitively easy to process. An example of this would be an individual who is surrounded by people who believe and talk about a piece of fake news. Although evidence suggests this idea is false, the ease of processing this idea now makes believing it far easier.
  • The halo effect is when you attribute more positive features to a person/thing based on one positive impression. For example, believing a person is more intelligent than they actually are because they are beautiful. 
  • Confirmation bias occurs when you have a certain belief and seek out information that supports this belief. You also ignore information that challenges this belief. For example, a detective may identify a suspect early in the case but may only seek confirming instead of disproving evidence. Filter bubbles or “algorithmic editing” amplify confirmation bias in social media. The algorithms accomplish this by showing the user only information and posts they will likely agree with rather than exposing them to opposing perspectives. 
  • Framing effects relate to how the context of a dilemma can influence people’s behavior. For example, people tend to avoid risk when a positive frame is presented and seek risk when a negative frame is presented. In one study, when a late registration penalty was introduced, 93% of PhD students registered early. But the percentage declined to 67% when it was presented as a discount for early registration. 
  • Finally, base-rate neglect or base-rate fallacy relates to our tendency to focus on individuating information rather than base-rate information. Individuating information is specific to a certain person or event. Base rate information is objective, statistical information. We tend to assign greater value to the specific information and often ignore the base rate information altogether. So, we are more likely to make assumptions based on individual characteristics rather than the prevalence of something in general. The false-positive paradox is an example of the base rate fallacy. There are cases where there are a larger number of false positives than true positives. For example, 100 out of 1,000 people test positive for an infection, but only 20 actually have the infection. This suggests 80 tests were false positives. The probability of positive results depends on several factors, including testing accuracy as well as the characteristic of the sampled population. The prevalence, meaning the proportion of those who have a given condition can be lower than the test’s false positive rate. In such a situation, even tests that have a very low chance of producing a false positive in an individual case will give more false positives than true positives overall . Here’s another example: Even if the one person in your Chemistry elective course looks and acts like a traditional medical student, the chances that they are studying medicine are slim. This is because medical programs usually have only 100 or so students, compared to the thousands of students enrolled in other faculties such as Business or Engineering. While it might be easy to make snap judgments about people based on specific information, we shouldn’t allow this to completely erase the baseline statistical information.
  • Availability : The bias of availability occurs when we take into account a salient event, a recent experience, or something that’s particularly vivid to us, to make our judgments. People who are guided by System 1 are more susceptible to the Availability bias than others. An example of this bias would be listening to the news and hearing there has been a large plane crash in another country. If you had a flight the following week, you could have a disproportionate belief that your flight will also crash.
  • The Sunk-Cost Fallacy : This fallacy occurs when people continue to invest additional resources into a losing account despite better investments being available. For example, when investors allow the purchase price of a stock to determine when they can sell, they fall prey to the sunk cost fallacy. Investors’ inclination for selling winning stocks too early while holding on to losing stocks for far too long has been well-researched. Another example is staying in a long-term relationship despite it being emotionally damaging. They fear starting over because it means everything they did in the past was all for nothing, but this fear is usually more destructive than letting go. This fallacy is also the reason that people become addicted to gambling. To tackle this fallacy you should avoid the escalation of commitment to something that could fail.

Regression to the mean is the statistical fact that any sequence of trials will eventually converge to the mean. Despite this, humans tend to identify lucky and unlucky streaks as a sign of future outcomes e.g. I have lost five slot machine pulls in a row, so I am due a win. This belief is associated with several mental shortcomings that Kahneman considers:

  • Illusion of understanding: We construct narratives to make sense of the world. We look for causality where none exists.
  • Illusion of validity: Pundits, stock pickers and other experts develop an outsized sense of expertise.
  • Expert intuition: Algorithms applied with discipline often outdo experts and their sense of intuition.
  • Planning fallacy: This fallacy occurs when people overestimate the positive outcomes of a chance-based experience because they planned for the occasion. 
  • Optimism and the Entrepreneurial Delusion: Most people are overconfident, tend to neglect competitors, and believe they will outperform the average.

StoryShot #7: Hindsight Significantly Influences Decision-Making

Using various elements, Daniel Kahneman shows how little of our past we understand. He mentions hindsight, a bias that has an especially negative effect on the decision making process. Specifically, hindsight shifts the measure used to assess the soundness of decisions. This shift moves the measure from the process itself to the nature of the outcome. Kahneman notes that actions that seemed prudent in foresight can look irresponsibly negligent in hindsight.

A general limitation of humans is our inability to accurately reconstruct past states of knowledge or beliefs that have changed. Hindsight bias has a significant impact on the evaluations of decision-makers. It leads observers to assess the quality of a decision not by whether the process was sound but by whether its outcome was good or bad.

Hindsight is especially unkind to decision-makers who act as agents for others: physicians, financial advisers, third-base coaches, CEOs, social workers, diplomats, and politicians. We are prone to blaming decision makers for good decisions that worked out badly. We also give them too little credit for successful actions that only appear evident after the outcomes. So, within humans, there is a clear outcome bias.

Although hindsight and the outcome bias generally foster risk aversion, they also bring undeserved rewards to irresponsible risk seekers. An example of this is entrepreneurs who take crazy gambles and luckily win. Lucky leaders are also never punished for having taken too much risk.

StoryShot #8: Risk Aversion

Kahneman notes that humans tend to be risk-averse, meaning we tend to avoid risk whenever we can. Most people dislike risk due to the potential of receiving the lowest possible outcome. So, if they are offered the choice between a gamble and an amount equal to its expected value, they will pick the sure thing. The expected value is calculated by multiplying each of the possible outcomes by the likelihood each outcome will occur and summing all of those values. A risk-averse decision-maker will choose a sure thing that is less than the expected value of the risk. In effect, they are paying a premium to avoid uncertainty.

Kahneman also introduces the concept of loss aversion. Many options we face in life are a mixture of potential loss and gain. There is a risk of loss and an opportunity for gain. So, we must decide whether to accept the gamble or reject it.

Loss aversion refers to the relative strength of two motives: we are driven more strongly to avoid losses than achieve gains. A reference point is sometimes the status quo, but it can also be a goal in the future. For example, not achieving a goal is a loss; exceeding the goal is a gain.

The two motives are not equally powerful. Failure aversion is far stronger than the motivation to obtain a goal. So, people often adopt short-term goals that they strive to achieve but not necessarily exceed. They are likely to reduce their efforts when they have reached immediate goals. This means their results can sometimes violate economic logic.

Kahneman also explains that people attach value to gains and losses rather than wealth. So, the decision weights that they assign to outcomes are different from probabilities. People who face terrible options take desperate gambles, accepting a high probability of making things worse in exchange for a small hope of avoiding a large loss. Risk-taking of this kind often turns manageable failures into disasters. Because defeat is so difficult to accept, the losing side in wars often fights long past the point that victory is guaranteed for the other side.

Thinking, Fast and Slow Book Summary, Review, Notes

Daniel Kahneman’s book “Thinking, Fast and Slow” was written with the intention of assisting readers in identifying cognitive faults. In it, the author hopes to assist readers in comprehending and recognizing these processes inside themselves, as well as gaining an understanding of how it might be remedied. This book is a follow-up to prior research on prospect theory that was collected and published in the academic publication “Choices, Values, and Frames” in the year 2000.

The book “Thinking, Fast and Slow” has been updated with new research findings, numerous examples from ordinary life, and references to other recent work in the field that are relevant to the discussion.

What is being said in detail, part i. two systems.

In this first section, the author defines System 1 and System 2 thinking. In System 1, mental processes occur spontaneously, whereas in System 2, they need conscious effort. With the former, you can come up with complicated patterns of ideas, while the latter is the only way to come up with a well-organized list of steps. All these systems have their own strengths , weaknesses, and limitations. In System 1, these are skills that people have had since they were born. In addition, this covers the routines they’ve been following for so long that they no longer have to think about them. The majority of talents are involuntary, whereas others, such as chewing, are controllable but usually automatic. System 2 includes things that need your full attention. In most cases, the disruption of a process occurs when its focus is shifted. As with any such thinking, the emphasis is on the end result. It’s practically hard to multitask since people’s brains are wired to prioritize one task above the others.

There are numerous ways in which these two systems interact. When System 1 encounters an issue, it typically summons System 2 to provide additional information. Self-control is regulated by System 2 as well. Both systems work together by splitting up the tasks so that they can do the most with the least amount of work. Being quick to act in the face of threats or seize upon significant possibilities increases the likelihood of survival, and as a result, System 1 typically takes the lead in times of crisis. Survival instincts take precedence in this kind of action. Here he proposes the “Law of Least Effort,” which argues that when faced with multiple options for accomplishing the same task, people will choose the one that requires the fewest steps. The brain prefers efficient solutions, thus it tends to choose the simplest one. Self-control and cognitive work are both types of mental work.   Simply put, when System 2 is busy doing something else, System 1 has more of an effect on how people act. A person’s ability to exercise self-control can be weakened by factors other than cognitive load, such as lack of sleep and alcohol use. This occurs because exercising self-control requires conscious thought and action; in other words, System 2 is responsible for the action.

System 2 is responsible for enforcing norms and keeping an eye on the suggestions made by System 1. System 2 also permits activities to take place, repressing or modifying them as needed. Most people have an overinflated sense of self-assurance and trust their gut instincts rather than do any research. When people think something is true, they will probably also believe the arguments that support it.  In the end, intelligence is not just the ability to make sense of things, but also the ability to find important information hidden in your memory and pay full attention when you need to.

Here, Kahneman explains a psychological phenomenon he calls “Association Activation.” The phrase “cognitive process” is used to describe what happens in the brain when one concept triggers a cascade of related ideas. The truth is that all of these parts are intertwined and mutually beneficial. When two words that might seem out of place next to each other on paper are present, System 1 will attempt to figure out why they are there. Even the body makes an effort to make sense of the world around it. Scientists say that hearing one word can make it easier to think of other words that go with it. This phenomenon has been named the priming effect. Furthermore, primed words have the potential to prime further thoughts when they appear. Not only can words, but also feelings and behaviors, be triggered. The ideomotor effect describes this priming scenario, or the ability to affect one action through an idea. The main job of System 1 is to figure out what is normal in a person’s psyche. Connections are made, and meaning is given, to every experience.

The primary goal of System 1 is, at its core, to make assumptions. This may sound harmless, but it’s actually rather dangerous if you’re in an unfamiliar scenario or if the stakes are high. There is no time to do the research necessary to make a sound choice. When things like this happen, it’s easier to make mistakes based on what you think you know. System 1 basically makes a call based on learned patterns and precedents. Once again, f Kahneman elaborates on The Halo Effect. This describes the propensity to form strong opinions about another person based on nothing but their feelings, even if there is evidence to the contrary. According to the halo effect, the order in which we see a person’s characteristics is completely at random, but this doesn’t make much of a difference because initial impressions are so important. Evaluations in System 1 are done mechanically. It only uses intensity matching to compare, and it isn’t always accurate. When posed a question, System 1 answers with more information than is strictly necessary; this is known as “mental shotgun.” Similar to a shotgun, it disperses information rather of narrowly focusing on a single target, thus the name.

And finally, we get to the bottom of the meaning of “substitution”   When System 1 struggles to discover a solution to a challenging issue, it will often select a much simpler, related question and answer that one instead. System 2 is, on the other hand, lazy by nature. It looks for information that fits with what a person already thinks and believes.

Part 2. Heuristics and Biases

System 2’s operations depend, at least in many cases, on the data that System 1 generates for System 2 through its associative processes. This makes it more likely that System 1 will make mistakes with “merely statistical” information, which is data where the outcome is determined by the rules of statistics rather than the type of cause-and-effect that System 1 is best at finding, whether it’s true or not. Because of how System 1 works, people often have the wrong ideas and don’t know much about sampling effects. They tend to exaggerate how often the things they see happen. Another thing is that research shows that people have a lot of faith in what they can learn by observing, even though everyone knows that a large sample is more accurate than a small one. People make big mistakes when they try to figure out how unpredictable true random events are because they like to think in terms of causes. People often fall into these traps because they look for patterns and think the world makes sense. Most of the time, people think more about what the message says than how reliable the information is. Most of the time, explanations of what caused random events to happen are wrong.

Later in this part of the book, Kahneman explains that the anchoring effect is when people think of a certain value for an unknown quantity before estimating or finding out the quantity. It’s called an anchor because the estimates are close to the number being looked at. One thing that shows this is when someone tries to buy a house. Usually, the asking price is used as a starting point for the estimated amount. Adjustment takes place when it’s clear that there are reasons to move away from the amount or anchor. It takes a lot of work to make this change. When a person’s mind is tired, they change less or stick close to the anchor point. Priming makes it possible for anchoring effects to happen. It also happens when there isn’t enough adjustment. Anchoring makes people more vulnerable than they want to be. This is because of the way their minds work.

In this way, availability cascades happen when the media overhype a simple or minor event. This then makes people think in a biased way. Then, policies are made based on these preferences or biases. When people deal with smaller risks , they either don’t care at all or pay too much attention to them.

Representativeness happens when all attention is put on stereotypes and the base rate is ignored, along with doubts about where the stereotype or label came from or how true it is.

Both Kahneman and Tversky came up with the “Linda Problem” to show that rules of thumb or “heuristics” are not good ways to make decisions and are not compatible with logic. In the research, the people who took part met an imaginary person named Linda. Each of them was given a list of things that could happen to Linda and told to put them in order of how likely they were to happen based on what they knew about Linda. In the research, Linda was shown to be someone who cared about unfair treatment. On the list, you can choose between Linda as a bank teller and Linda as a bank teller who is also an active member of the feminist movement. People who took part in the study actually liked the second choice better.  However, the community of bank tellers is larger, and this includes bank tellers who are part of the feminist movement. So, without the feminist movement, the best choice would be to be a bank teller. As you can see, logic lost out to representativeness or stereotypes when they were put up against each other. This was an example of a mistake in System 2. People usually call it a fallacy when they break a rule of logic. With the Linda problem, this showed a mistake called the “conjunction fallacy.” This is when people think that two connected events are more likely than one event when comparing them directly. The result also showed that it was easy to mix up ideas like probability, coherence, and plausibility. In a joint evaluation, you get to compare two sets, but in a single evaluation, you only get to see one of the two sets. System 1 sometimes shows the “less-is-more” pattern because it is easier to average than to add. This is also what happens in the case of Linda. Even though “Linda as a feminist bank teller” is a smaller subset of “Linda as a bank teller,” those who participated still thought it was the most likely answer.

Most people put people into groups based on stereotypes, and they are more likely to believe causal information than non-causal information. Even if you have strong evidence of a cause, you can’t change long-held or learned beliefs.

The author then talks about “the regression to the mean.” The regression to the mean is what happens when a variable is found to be extreme during the first measurement but tends toward the average during the second measurement. Also, if this variable is extreme the second time it is measured, it will be closer to the average the first time it is measured. It’s basically the definite change in any random process. The brain has a strong preference for causal explanations and doesn’t do well with numbers and statistics. Whenever a regression is found, the idea of what caused it will come up. But these will be wrong because regression to the mean always gives an explanation but never a cause.

There are many times in life when you have to guess what will happen. Even though most people are asked to make a prediction, they often give an evaluation of the evidence instead, even if they don’t realize they’re not answering the question. In this case, each prediction is biased in the same way. When they do this, they don’t care at all about regression to the mean. In this part’s conclusion, System 2 is responsible for correcting intuitive predictions. It takes a lot of work to be able to look for relevant reference categories, estimate baseline predictions, and evaluate the quality of the evidence. Also, System 1 makes very extreme predictions, which most people tend to trust a lot. On the other hand, regression is a common System 2 problem because the idea of regressing to the mean is hard to explain and understand.

Part 3. Overconfidence

In this part of the book, Kahneman explains what he calls “narrative fallacies.” A well-known statistician and psychologist named Nassim Taleb brought up the idea of “narrative fallacy.” It said that flawed stories from the past help shape how people see the world and what they expect from it. People make these mistakes when they keep trying to figure out everything around them. People make these mistakes when they put too much emphasis on how skilled they are and not enough on how lucky they were. When luck plays a big part in a process or story, there isn’t as much to learn from it. When it comes down to it, the brain is a very thorough structure for making sense of stories from the past. Hindsight bias is when a person can’t remember how they felt about something in the past. This makes them wrongly estimate how much it affected them. On the other hand, outcome bias is when people blame those who make decisions when good decisions don’t turn out right. On the other hand, they don’t give much credit when the decision they made turns out well. Basically, what seems like a good idea at the time can look foolish or even neglectful when viewed from a distance.

Next, people have an illusion of validity when they know their predictions aren’t much better than random guesses, but they still think their predictions are true. Stock pickers are equally susceptible to the illusion of skill. Research shows that stock pickers try to make educated guesses when there is a lot of uncertainty. If you look closely, you can see that these educated guesses are just as accurate as guessing the outcome without any information. In professional culture, there is often a strong emphasis on both the illusion of skill and the illusion of validity. As long as there is strong support for a belief (in this case, the person is surrounded by people who share the same beliefs), it tends to last and grow. Despite what most people might think, reality is the result of different forces interacting, which also includes luck. Because of this, things can go in any direction.

Emotional learning, like being afraid of certain things, is easy and quick to learn at its most basic level, but it takes a lot longer to get good at it. Being an expert at a certain task or job comes down to having a large number of smaller skills at your disposal. To learn a skill, you need two things: a setting that is almost always the same or predictable, and the chance to learn these patterns through longer practice. Intuition, in general, is impossible without the presence of external behavior patterns. Unless you have the opportunity to practice anything frequently and deliberately, you will never develop the level of mastery that is required to achieve excellence.

When people work on a project and try to figure out how it will turn out, they are more likely to look at it from the inside. On the other hand, cases handled by other people within the same reference class are taken into account by the external perspective. A planning fallacy happens when predictions and plans are made in an unrealistic way that leans toward the best-case scenario. To avoid a planning mistake, planners should look at the problem from the outside by putting it next to relevant information from other cases. This way of thinking about a planning mistake is called a reference class forecasting.

In conclusion, those who are more likely to see the bright side of things are more likely to take chances despite the high risk involved. Entrepreneurs that have an optimistic bias are more likely to believe that they are associated with a successful business, even if this is not the case. These individuals also continue to persist even when they encounter disappointment in the results of their efforts.

Part 4. Choices

In this part of the book, the author starts to talk about psychophysics, a phenomenon that Daniel Bernoulli, a Swiss physicist and mathematician, found to be true about people who take risks. People tend to choose the sure thing when they have a choice between gambling and something else with the same value. Basically, he thought that when people make a decision, it has nothing to do with how much money something is worth. Instead, it has to do with how they feel about the outcome, or their utilities. But later studies showed that a person’s happiness depends on a change in his or her wealth compared to his or her reference points. Bernoulli’s model didn’t have a point of reference.

Bernoulli’s utility theory says that the benefit of a gain can be found by comparing the benefits of two different kinds of wealth. This model has one flaw: it doesn’t have a point of reference. This link points to the state in which gains and losses are measured. Prospect theory, on the other hand, went beyond utility theory by explaining how people make decisions, especially when risk is involved and they have to choose between different prospects or options. This theory also explains how people make decisions based on their own feelings instead of facts. The prospect theory is more complicated than the utility theory. It has three cognitive features. First, people judge things based on a neutral point of reference, which is usually the status quo or the way things are right now. The second feature says that the principle of diminishing sensitivity can be used to measure both changes in wealth and the way things feel. Lastly, the third feature says that people don’t like to lose—basically, losses seem bigger than gains.

He later explains that the Endowment Effect is when an item seems to increase in value for the person who owns it. During this time, it hurts just as much to let go of something as it does to get or buy something new. Its main idea is that goods that are traded have a different value than goods that are enjoyed.

The brain is made so that it gives more weight to bad news than to good news. This is shown perfectly by the idea of loss aversion. There are moral rules that help decide what can and can’t be done in terms of gains and losses.

Kahneman goes on to explain how people’s preferences tend to follow a pattern. When a person understands something complicated, their brain gives each of its parts a certain amount of importance. Some of the weights that are put on an object are sometimes more important than others. This leads to the possibility effect, which says that results that aren’t likely to happen are given more weight than they deserve. On the other hand, there is also the certainty effect, which says that people give less weight to certain outcomes than what probability would suggest. In the prospect theory, both gains and losses are worth more to a person than their wealth. They also give different values or weights to the outcomes, which is very different from the probability. The four-fold preference pattern is regarded as the most important aspect of this theory. The first part of the fourfold pattern says that people don’t like taking risks, especially if they stand to gain a lot from them. The second is that when a big prize is offered, they don’t care that their chances of winning aren’t very good. Third, people will buy a high-priced item even though it costs a lot just to get peace of mind and stop worrying. One example is insurance. Lastly, people who don’t have many good choices will often gamble even though they’re likely to make things worse, just to have a small chance of avoiding a big loss.

Now, something interesting happens when people are exposed to the media: the availability cascade. It happens whenever the media show people pictures of damage that are very clear and extreme. When these images are shown at this time, it is System 1 that causes an automatic, uncontrolled emotional response. Even if System 2 says that these things are unlikely to happen, it can’t stop System 1 from reacting. When this happens, probability goes out the window. There is only the chance of something happening. People give unlikely events too much weight when making decisions because they think they are more likely to happen than they really are. This choice is based on both how easy it is to picture the situation and how clear it is. There’s also the denominator neglect, which happens when the vividness of a certain event helps make it more important for a decision. This is also why different ways of telling people about risks can have different effects on different people.

Narrow framing is when people look at a series of two small decisions separately. People use broad framing when they think about four options when making a single choice. With a broad perspective, it dulls the emotional response to losses and makes a person more willing to take more risks. For people who make decisions with a narrow framing mentality, it would be helpful to have a risk plan they can use whenever a similar problem comes up. The outside view and risk policy can be used to fix both the planning fallacy’s optimism and the loss aversion’s tendency to make people be careful. People often keep track of what they do by how successful they are and how much they like themselves. Having a finite mindset helps people keep things in check and makes them feel in charge.

People’s beliefs about what is right and wrong are not always based on how they feel. This makes it possible for people’s preferences to change. Aside from that, their moral intuitions aren’t always the same, especially when it comes to different situations. System 1 is usually in charge of how we feel, and it usually only makes one assessment. On the other hand, a joint evaluation needs a more thorough and careful look, so System 2 needs to be in charge. The world is made up of different groups, and people often have rules for each group. As long as things are in the same category, the preferences and decisions made about them make sense. However, if the things being studied are from different categories, the results might not make sense.

There are meanings that have to do with reality, but sometimes the meanings have more to do with what is going on in a person’s System 1 while they are trying to understand the situation. People can’t be thought of as rational because the same logical statements can make different people feel different things depending on how they feel at the time. System 1 isn’t based in reality, so the choices that people make aren’t tied to the real world. These moral feelings are more in line with descriptions or frames of reality than with reality itself.

Part 5. Two Selves

In this last part, the author talks about how we have two different mental selves. People have two selves in their minds: the self that remembers and the self that lives. The experiencing self is in charge of answering questions like, “How are things right now?” The remembering-self, on the other hand, has to answer questions like, “How was it, all in all?” During a person’s life, the only things they can keep are their memories. It’s called a “cognitive illusion” when people mistake what they’re going through for a memory. The remembering self’s job is to make up stories and store them away for future use. Most people put a lot of thought into their life story and go out of their way to make it interesting. When judging whole lives intuitively, even the small parts, the ends and peaks are more important than the length.

In this way, people experience well-being when their lives are full of things they would rather keep doing than stop doing. People know they are having a good time when they are totally absorbed in what they are doing. This is called “flow.” If someone doesn’t want to be stopped, that’s a good sign that they’re having a good time. The U-index shows how much of a person’s time they spend in a bad state. The idea of “well-being” has two main parts, First, there’s the idea of how people feel when they go about their daily lives. Second, there is the judgment they make about their lives every time they think about it. Using the idea that money can buy happiness, we can say that being poor will make a person unhappy and that having money can make a person happier with their life, but it doesn’t really make them happier. Taking charge of your time is one of the easiest things you can do to make yourself happier or more enjoyable. By giving them time to do the things they enjoy, their happiness will go up.

Lastly, the focusing illusion, affective forecasting, and the passing of time are the three main things that affect how happy a person is with their life. As time goes on, people stop paying attention to something new because it is no longer new. The mind is made to process stories easily, but it is not made to process time easily.

Book Review (Personal Opinion):

I believe that this is a wonderful book that provides a lot of information about a large number of mistakes that we make in the decisions that we make on a daily basis. The book is easy to read and is divided into extremely short portions that can each be read in thirty minutes or less, making it an excellent choice for reading on public transportation, for example. It demonstrated how our brains process information and make sense of the world around us by employing both intuitive and analytical mental processes simultaneously. This book makes an effort to explain and demonstrate the judgment mistakes that people make. Everything is founded on research, both statistical and psychological, and the studies proved why and how we produce mental fallacies. The research forms the basis of everything. It also gave us new words we could use to talk about or describe these things. This is an excellent book for readers who are interested in delving more deeply into the human psyche as well as gaining a more in-depth understanding of the subject matter at hand.

How I’ve Implemented The Ideas From The Book

The dichotomy Kahneman sets up on the first page was one of the most interesting things I noticed about the book. He tells the reader to think of the book as being about two main people. The first character, System 1, is the unsung “hero” of our mind’s story. It is always on and is the first thing our minds think of when they think of something. The main ideas behind System 1 are that it is fast, more “emotional,” and more likely to make mistakes and be biased. It works well, doesn’t take much work, and is always running in the background. In other words, System 1 uses what Kahneman and Tversky call “heuristics” to make decisions. On the other hand, Kahneman adds a side character named System 2 that thinks it is the main character. System 2 is more planned and aware, and it’s what we think of when we talk about ourselves. Knowing this has helped very much since I’ve improved my decision processes. It helps me improve my thinking and decision-making. And, now, I always think consciously about all the decisions I made, instead of just doing the first thing that comes to mind.
