While the outage only lasted about two hours, Discord users logged over 1.1 million reports on Downdetector while they waited patiently for the messaging service to come back online. During that period, folks had to resort to voice calls to catch up.

2. WhatsApp, October 25, 2022

Meta-owned WhatsApp is one of the most important global messaging services friends, families, and businesses use to keep in touch and connect to the world. But on October 25, WhatsApp’s 2 billion users found they were incommunicado and could not send any messages. Lasting for roughly two hours, the WhatsApp outage notched nearly 2.9 million issue reports on Downdetector, placing it as runner-up on our list for Downdetector’s biggest outage of the year.

1. Spotify, March 8, 2022

chart of Spotify outage in 2022

Competition for the largest worldwide outage was extremely tight this year, with Spotify edging out Meta-owned WhatsApp by about 20,000 reports on Downdetector at just over 2.9 million reports. As previously mentioned, March 8 was a big day of downed services. Spotify, the popular music streaming portal, had the biggest outage of the year that day, with users unable to stream their favorite music and podcasts for nearly two hours.

Honorable mention: “It’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me”

Notably, but not on this list of biggest outages, Taylor Swift broke the internet a couple of times with the launch of her new album, Midnights . She first disrupted services on Spotify with the October 21 midnight launch of her album for a very brief moment. And then later in the year, to many fans’ frustration and anger, Ticketmaster became inaccessible on November 15 to would-be concert goers who sadly missed out on affordable tickets to her upcoming tour.

Another year, another Downdetector top 10 outages list

Downdetector will continue to leverage over 25 million monthly reports from individual users, real-time analysis, and verification of outage reports, and make sure you have reliable information about the status of services that are important to you. We’ll continue monitoring the world’s largest service disruptions, and be back this time next year with 2023’s largest outages.

Until then, if you want to keep up to date on the latest outages or want quick updates on what’s going on in your country, download the Speedtest app (which has Downdetector integration) for iOS or Android .

Big Internet outages hit the East Coast, causing issues for Verizon, Zoom, Slack, Gmail

Internet outages and slowed services hit many areas of the east coast just as the work and school day was ramping up tuesday.

big internet outage today

People across the East Coast were having trouble accessing core Internet services Tuesday morning, just as they were logging on for work and school.

Users reported trouble loading Gmail, Slack and Zoom — apps that have become necessities to keep work-from-home life running smoothly during the coronavirus pandemic. Downdetector, which tracks reports of outages, showed widespread issues with Verizon, Google, Zoom, YouTube, Slack, Amazon Web Services and others Tuesday just before noon.

The issue seemed to be stemming from problems with the Verizon Fios Internet service, though the company did not quickly confirm issues. Verizon’s customer support team said on Twitter on Tuesday that a fiber had been cut in Brooklyn, which could possibly account for some of the issues. The support account on Twitter quickly became inundated with customers asking why their Internet was slow and bumpy.

Internet speeds and access started gradually coming back to normal performance after about an hour of the outages. Many services were back to operating as usual by midafternoon.

Many people took to Twitter to point out issues with their Verizon Fios service. Amazon Web Services’ status page showed its service, which provides computing power to large swaths of the Internet, was experiencing an issue with an external provider. On its status page, it said that it is “investigating connectivity issues with an internet provider, mainly affecting the East Coast of the United States, outside of the AWS Network.” Slack and Google said there were no issues with their own services.

Slack confirmed on its status page that the issues seemed to be isolated to the East Coast. “We’re aware of and monitoring an internet service issue that could impact East Coast users’ internet connection and ability to use Slack,” the notice reads.

Verizon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

It’s tough to know how unusual the cause of the outage was until Verizon releases any information, said Lisa Pierce, vice president of research at Gartner, though she doubt the cut cable in Brooklyn was entirely to blame.

“It doesn’t make any sense that it would cause this big a ripple,” she said.

The outage shows the need for backup plans for businesses and schools relying so heavily on it, Pierce said. It also calls into question whether its time for Congress and the Federal Communications Commission to get more involved about minimum standards for Internet service, she said.

Jessica Rosenworcel, the acting chairwoman of the Federal Communications Commission, said on Twitter that the agency was working to figure out what was going on with the outage.

“We have seen reports of internet-related outages on the East Coast, making it difficult for people to work remotely and go to school online,” she tweeted.

Internet traffic volume to Verizon dropped by about 12 percent globally during the hour-long outage, according to data from Kentik, a firm that monitors network traffic online. The Internet will never work perfectly 100 percent of the time, Kentik’s director of Internet analysis Doug Madory said.

“Its almost like a living organism that has a hiccup now and then, and the flu sometimes,” he said.

The outage disrupted school districts’ online teaching programs, which have become essential in the past year.

In Northern Virginia, the outages wreaked havoc in online classrooms, bringing the virtual school day to a standstill. In Alexandria City Public Schools, which serves 16,000 and is currently offering online-only instruction, many teachers could not dial into Zoom to lead their Tuesday afternoon classes.

And in Fairfax County Public Schools, whose 186,000 students make it the largest school system in the state, students were unable to log into virtual lessons, according to a tweet from the school division. Like neighboring Alexandria, Fairfax is pursuing 100 percent remote learning.

“FCPS is aware that many people in our region are experiencing internet outages,” the school’s Twitter account wrote. “We will provide updates as we know more.”

Prince William County Public Schools in Virginia tweeted just after noon Tuesday that it is “aware of Internet connection problems with Verizon FIOS impacting students and staff.”

Internet Outage That Crashed Dozens Of Websites Caused By Software Update

The Amazon website is seen in 2017 in Dandenong, Australia. Amazon was among dozens of sites hit by a massive internet outage on Thursday.

A widespread internet outage caused several major websites to shut down Thursday afternoon, including Amazon, Delta, Capital One and Costco.

Akamai, a content distribution network that helps with the spread of data around the internet, posted on Twitter that a software configuration update caused a bug in its DNS system.

A DNS, or domain name service, helps match a website's name to its IP address. If the DNS fails, it becomes impossible to search and connect to a website by name.

The outage lasted approximately one hour. Akamai says it rolled back the software configuration update. By around 1:13 p.m. ET, the site read "all systems operational."

When reached by NPR, Akamai said, "We have implemented a fix for this issue, and based on current observations, the service is resuming normal operations."

Akamai also confirmed that the outage was not due to a cyber attack.

A similar widespread outage occurred in June when another content delivery network, Fastly, experienced a software bug. Websites like CNN, The New York Times , Twitch and Reddit were down for nearly an hour.

The outages, while temporary, are raising concerns about the number of websites that rely on just a few content delivery networks like Fastly and Akamai, creating a more fragile internet ecosystem.

The internet outage that took down several major websites seems to be fixed

thumbnail

  • Several major websites briefly went down in a widespread outage linked to content distribution network Akamai.
  • Akamai said it fixed the issue, and the affected websites were back online by early afternoon.
  • The outage caused real-world disruptions. For example, Delta Air Lines customers couldn't check into flights online.

In this article

Several major websites briefly went down Thursday in a widespread outage linked to content distribution network Akamai.

By about 12:50 p.m. ET, Akamai said it fixed the issue and the service seemed to be back to normal. The company later said on Twitter that the issue was caused by a software update that triggered a bug. It confirmed the incident was not a result of a cyber attack on its platform. Akamai said the disruption lasted for "up to an hour" and apologized for the inconvenience.

Akamai, whose operation helps data move around the internet, said on its website earlier Thursday that it was investigating "an emerging issue with the Edge DNS service."

Oracle had also pointed to Akamai as the source of the issue, which impacted some Oracle cloud properties, but it said resources within its own cloud service were not affected.

The Domain Name System is like a phone book for websites. The technology figures out the right IP addresses to use when people try to go to individual websites. The Edge DNS service from Akamai takes care of this work for apps and websites and protects against distributed denial-of service, or DDoS, attacks.

Delta Air Lines , British Airways, Capital One , Go Daddy, Vanguard, UPS , LastPass, AT&T and Costco were among the websites loading slowly or showing "DNS failure" Thursday afternoon.

The outage caused some real-world disruptions. For example, Delta customers could not use the airline's website or app to check into flights until Akamai fixed the problem.

Russia-Ukraine latest: Vladimir Putin blamed for death of Alexei Navalny - as mourners arrested

The jailed Putin critic Alexei Navalny has died in prison, according to Russian officials. Western leaders have condemned Vladimir Putin's regime and say the Russian president should be held accountable for the death.

Two Russian citizens have expressed their shame and fury following the death of Alexei Navalny.

Mourners told Sky News the events taking place in their country were "a disgrace".

Watch the full interviews below...

One of the many questions that surround Alexi Navalny's death is why it happened now, almost three years after he returned to Russia.

Author and financier Bill Browder said there were three reasons for the timing.

Firstly, Vladimir Putin wanted to eliminate a political opponent.

Secondly, he wanted to show Russians that if you oppose Mr Putin you will face death.

And thirdly, it sent a message to those sitting at the Munich Security Conference, where world leaders meet to discuss defence issues, that Mr Putin can "cross every red line and get away with it".

"To watch somebody who I knew, who I respected, who I worked with, murdered in the light of day was a huge shock to the system," said Mr Browder.

"Let's not mince words here - he was murdered, he didn't die, he was murdered at the hands of Vladimir Putin."

The British foreign office has summoned the Russian ambassador over the death of Alexei Navalny.

The move was intended to "make clear that we hold the Russian authorities fully responsible," said spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

"No-one should doubt the brutal nature of the Russian system.

"His death must be investigated fully and transparently."

The FCDO paid tribute to Mr Navalny for dedicating his life to "exposing the corruption of the Russian system, calling for free and open politics, and holding the Kremlin to account".

"The Russian authorities saw Mr Navalny as a threat. Many Russian citizens felt he gave them a voice."

The spokesperson continued: "Even from his prison cell, he continued to speak up for the rights of the Russian people. His dedication to human rights and exposing corruption was an inspiration to millions. The ideals for which he stood and died will live forever."

Photographers on the ground have captured the moment people gathering after Alexei Navalny's death were detained in St Petersburg.

Sky's Yalda Hakim will host a special programme this evening, focusing on Alexei Navalny's death.

Tune in on Sky News from 9pm, or by clicking the livestream at the top of this page.

There is no one in Russia with a rallying cry that could replace Alexei Navalny, said Moscow correspondent Diana Magnay .

And the ability of security forces to shut dissent down is "very extensive", she said.

"Even now we're already seeing the first arrests and these aren't even rallies," said Magnay, referring to the stream of people coming out across the country to lay flowers.

"Individuals who have decided to come and also hold up a piece of paper, they are promptly arrested... a journalist in St Petersburg has been arrested."

In tributes unrelated to Mr Navalny, wives and mothers of soldiers have been journeying to the tomb of the unknown soldier to lay flowers. They haven't been arrested, but the journalists covering them have been, said Magnay.

"Once you get within the legal system, the charges start coming against you, and your questioned first and then things get more and more difficult, and then suddenly you're in jail for a Tweet.

"I have seen that happen to so many people which is why so many people, a lot of whom are supporters of Alexei Navalny, have left the country and why other people just choose to look the other way.

"Unfortunately, there is no one to replace him who has the kind of rallying-cry effect that he had."

We can now bring you footage of arrests taking place in St Petersburg, where people were gathering to pay tribute to Alexei Navalny.

Footage taken by RusNews shows participants and journalists being grabbed and led away by balaclava-clad officers.

France and Ukraine have signed a security agreement including pledges from Paris to deliver more arms, train soldiers and send up to €3bn in military aid to Kyiv this year.

France, alongside other partners, will also help Ukraine make its defence capacities "increasingly interoperable with NATO", according to the French president's office.

"This includes the development of a modern defence sector in Ukraine and a path to a future in NATO."

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the deal was ambitious and very substantive.

Alexei Navalny is the latest in a string of Putin critics to die during the Russian leader's years at the top of the Kremlin.

A number of his opponents have suffered unfortunate fates - including being jailed, shot dead in the street, or poisoned with tea spiked with polonium-210.

Who are the people who have dared speak out against Mr Putin or defy the Kremlin, and where are they now?

Read more here...

Russian police have been arresting mourners and journalists at spontaneous gatherings for Alexei Navalny, according to reports.

People were filmed being grabbed by officers and put in the back of vans in St Petersburg by RusNews, including their reporter, Elina Kozich.

Novaya Gazeta said their photographer Alexei Dushutin was detained in the cityat the Memorial to Victims of Political Repression.

Earlier this evening, Associated Press photographers published images of people laying flowers at the site.

In Moscow, video appeared to show police struggling to pin down a protestor at a makeshift memorial while onlookers threw snow.

The footage, taken by freelance journalist Alec Luhn, also showed officers removing flowers from a monument in the city of Yekaterinburg.

The state prosecutor's office earlier told citizens of Moscow that any participation in events related to Navalny's death could lead to arrest.

Verdict expected Friday in Trump's $370 million civil fraud trial

Judge Arthur Engoron and former President Donald Trump.

State Judge Arthur Engoron, who presided over the $370 million civil fraud case in New York against former President Donald Trump and his company, is expected to issue his verdict in the trial by the end of the week, a person with direct knowledge of the situation told NBC News.

“It is currently anticipated the Engoron decision will be released on Friday, barring unforeseen circumstances,” the person said Tuesday.

The new target date was previously reported by Th e Ne w York Times .

Engoron had said that he hoped to issue his ruling in the monthslong trial by Jan. 31 , but a spokesman for the state court system told NBC News this month it was looking more like "early to mid-February ."

The highly anticipated ruling will cap a trial that started Oct. 2 and included testimony from the former president and his three oldest children, Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump and Eric Trump. Closing arguments in the case, in which state Attorney General Letitia James' office alleged Trump and top officials committed persistent fraud by inflating financial statements, took place Jan. 11.

Engoron has already found that Trump and his executives engaged in fraud. He now needs to decide on the issue of intent and what penalties Trump and his company should pay. James is seeking $370 million and a ban on Trump’s conducting further business in the New York real estate industry where he made his name, among other penalties.

Trump, who has called the case a politically motivated “fraud on me,” has denied any wrongdoing.

If the ruling comes Friday, it will mark the end of a busy court week for Trump. He attended a closed - door hearing Monday involving classified evidence in a federal criminal case charging him with mishandling national security information, and he is expected to appear in New York criminal court Thursday for a pretrial hearing in a case alleging he falsified business records tied to hush money payments.

There is also hearing in Georgia on Thursday involving Trump and his co-defendants' bid to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from her election interference racketeering case. That hearing is expected to continue into Friday.

Trump has pleaded not guilty in all three criminal cases.

BANGKOK (AP) — Shares rose in Asia on Thursday after Wall Street stocks recovered much of their sharp losses from a day before.

Oil prices declined.

Benchmarks rose in most major markets apart from Seoul, while mainland Chinese markets remained closed for the Lunar New Year holiday.

Japan reported its economy contracted at an annual rate of 0.4% in the last quarter of 2023. Its nominal GDP totaled $4.2 trillion last year, or about 591 trillion yen, putting it behind the U.S., China and Germany as the world’s fourth largest economy. Germany’s announced its GDP in 2023 was $4.4 trillion, or $4.5 trillion, depending on the currency conversion.

Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 gained 0.7% to 37,948.35 and the Hang Seng index in Hong Kong edged 0.1% higher, to 15,893.16.

In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 advanced 0.6% to 7,595.30. South Korea’s Kospi edged 0.1% lower, to 2,619.31.

India’s Sensex was up 0.4% and Taiwan’s Taiex jumped 2.8%. The SET in Bangkok was little changed.

On Wednesday, the S&P 500 climbed 1% to 5,000.62, clawing back more than two-thirds of its loss from Tuesday. A hotter-than-expected report on inflation forced investors to push back forecasts for when the Federal Reserve may begin cutting interest rates, potentially into the summer. Expectations for such cuts are a big reason stocks have rallied to records recently.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.4% to 38,424.27 a day after after taking its worst loss in nearly 11 months. The Nasdaq composite jumped 1.3% to 15,859.15.

The smallest stocks, which took the hardest hit from worries about higher interest rates on Tuesday, bounced back more than the rest of the market. The Russell 2000 index leaped 2.4%.

Calm on the bond market helped to keep things steadier on Wall Street. Treasury yields eased after shooting upward a day earlier on expectations the Fed would keep rates high for longer. The central bank has already jacked its main interest rate to the highest level since 2001 in hopes of slowing the overall economy just enough to grind high inflation down to its target.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.25% from 4.32% late Tuesday. It’s still well above its 3.85% level at the start of this month.

Nvidia, which has been surfing a mania around artificial-intelligence technology, rose 2.5% Wednesday. It was the single strongest force lifting the S&P 500 index.

DaVita jumped 8.6% for one of the S&P 500’s larger gains after the health care company reported stronger profit and revenue for the latest quarter than analysts expected.

Most companies in the S&P 500 have been topping analysts’ forecasts for the last three months of 2023. Hopes for stronger growth in 2024 from a solid economy have been another reason the S&P 500 has set 10 records already this year.

Lyft shares leaped 35.1% after a wild ride in off-hours trading driven in part by a typo in its latest earnings report. The ride-hailing company reported stronger results than analysts expected, but its press release also said it expects a key measure of profitability to improve by 500 basis points, or 5 percentage points. Later, it said that should have been 50 basis points, or 0.5 percentage points.

Lyft’s stock rocketed by more than 60% in after-hours trading Tuesday following the typo.

Rival Uber Technologies rose 14.7% after its board authorized a program to buy back up to $7 billion of its stock.

Robinhood Markets gained 13% after it reported a profit for the latest quarter, when analysts were expecting a loss.

On the losing end, Akamai Technologies dropped 8.2% after it reported mixed results.

Online vacation rental booker Airbnb slipped 1.7% after it reported losing $349 million in the fourth quarter due to an income tax settlement with Italy. Analysts had been expecting a profit.

In other trading, U.S. benchmark crude oil fell 30 cents to $76.34 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude, the international standard, lost 27 cents, to $81.33 per barrel.

The U.S. dollar slipped to 150.24 Japanese yen from 150.46 yen. The euro rose to $1.0733 from $1.0731.
