From Theory to Practice

  • Encouraging children to read and write in ways that allow them to make sense of real language in real contexts is more likely to help them develop the skills necessary to become fluent readers and writers. Creation of a class newspaper provides such a real context, and thus makes an excellent choice as the basis for a project designed with this goal in mind.

Preparation

Student Objectives

Students will

  • Layout and publish a classroom newspaper

Hold up a sample front page from a selected newspaper. Ask students what they notice about the format that is different from other texts they read (e.g., black and white ink, graphics, headline, column format). Divide the students into groups of three to four members. Explain to the students that they will explore a newspaper, paying attention to the layout and format. Instruct students to study the front page first and discuss what different parts they notice. Ask each group to report back to the whole class what members noticed was contained on the front page. Make a list of parts on the board. (e.g., title, headlines, pictures or graphics, captions, date, subtitles, table of contents/index, etc.). Students should notice similarities between different newspapers. Discuss with the class how newspapers use a standard format. In their groups, have students continue to explore copies of newspapers. What kinds of things do they notice? Students should begin to identify sections and features that are specific to newspapers. Have the groups again report to the whole class what types of items they noticed in their paper. Continue keeping the list of items on the board. (Additional items may include: editorials, cartoons, horoscope, local news, weddings, classifieds, advertising, etc.) Explain to the class that people read newspapers differently than other types of texts. Discuss how people read newspapers. Reading a newspaper matches people's interests in certain things. They scan headlines, subtitles, and images to see if the story interests them or not. Read some sample headlines from newspapers. Ask, "How many of you would be interested in reading this story?" For homework, have students ask their family members what newspapers they read regularly and what sections they read most often. Give an example of your own newspaper reading habits. (For example, "First I check the weather to help me decide what to wear to school. Then I go to the local news to see what is happening in my town. Finally, I scan the headlines to see what is happening in the world. If I have time, I start the crossword puzzle.")

Ask the students to report about their family's newspaper reading habits. Make a list of newspapers that are read and determine which are the most common. List the words who, what, where, when, and why on the board, overhead, or chart paper. Answer each of the five W questions using the popular rhyme "Jack & Jill." Example:

  • Who? Jack and Jill
  • What? Fell down and broke crown
  • Where? On the hill
  • When? Sometime in the past
  • Why? Trying to fetch water

Read "Bad Fall Injures Children" article from page 4 of the Grandview Newspaper lesson plan . Students clarify their previous responses to the five W s according to the article. Explain how these five questions help to summarize a news story. Put students in groups of three to four members. Ask the students to choose another famous rhyme or fairy tale and answer the five W questions. Have each group read just the answers to their questions, and then have the class try to guess what fairy tale or rhyme it is. Explain that these five W s help with the organization of a news story and that they make up the most important details of the story. Demonstrate to the class the organization of a good news story using the Inverted Pyramid Format overhead. Use a sample newspaper story to illustrate an example of this format For homework, ask students to select a newspaper article that they are interested in reading and bring it to school the next day.

Give students time to read the newspaper article they brought from home. Hand out the Newspaper Story Format sheet. Students should then complete the sheet using details from their particular article and share the summary of their newspaper article. Ask the students to rewrite the newspaper article in their own words as if they were a reporter for their local newspaper. What changes would they make and why? Have the students share their stories with a classmate using the following questions to guide their discussion:

  • Were changes made to the lead? Why?
  • Were changes made to the five W s? Why?
  • Were changes made to the details? Why?

As a class, discuss fact versus opinion. Explain that news articles do not include the reporter's opinion. Have students go back and see if the changes that were made to their articles were strictly factual. Refer to original articles as needed for examples of fact-based stories.

Read-aloud to the class from one or more of the suggested titles:

  • The Furry News: How to Make a Newspaper by Loreen Leedy
  • Freddy and the Bean Home News by Walter R. Brooks

Have students brainstorm the types of articles they would like to write and list them on the board. Look at the list and ask students if the articles could be grouped into categories or "newspaper sections." Use the Reporting Tips overhead to present how to make newspaper articles more interesting. Go over each point and clarify any questions that students may raise. Group students based on interests to form an "editorial staff" for each newspaper section. Have the groups meet to decide who will write which stories. Students can use the Reporter's Guide handout as a guideline. When they have finished, students can begin collecting facts for their stories.

Session 5 and 6

Take students to the computer lab and have them write their first draft. They should not worry about font, size, or columns at this point. Be sure that they save their work and print a hard copy of their article for editing. Students' stories should then be self-edited and edited by two other members of their editorial staff (using the Story Feedback Form ). Students should make necessary revisions to their stories based on the comments from the Story Feedback Form.

In the computer lab, have students access the Internet Public Library website and explore newspapers from around the world. They should pay particular attention to the design and layout elements. For example, some articles may include graphics (e.g., photos, charts, graphs). Discuss what patterns of layout design the students noticed. As a whole class, discuss newspaper layout, addressing the following points:

  • Headline News: Top priority articles are near the front (1-2 pages). These are typically of high interest to your entire audience of readers (e.g., town news such as a new park or community center). Long front-page articles can be continued on an inside page to provide room for other headline news.
  • Feature Articles: Stories about topics or events that are of interest to a certain group of readers (e.g., sports, animal stories, academic topics, interviews with school staff, book reviews). These are typically grouped into sections.
  • Pictures or graphics: The image should always appear with the story. A caption can be included. The size usually depends on how much space is available in the layout.

Give students the opportunity to explore these layout items in newspapers in the classroom and online. Students should look at the Junior Seahawk Newsletter to get ideas for their own layout.

Session 8 and 9

In the computer lab, students should complete final story revisions. They may then begin the newspaper layout using appropriate software. The ReadWriteThink Printing Press includes an option for creating a newspaper. Each editorial staff works together to complete their newspaper section. Note: 8 ½ X 11 size pages are optimal. They can be printed and copied back to back on 11 X 17 paper that can be folded like a real newspaper. The completed paper must have an even number of pages for this format. Pictures can be drawn or pasted into the layout. Depending on the available resources, pictures can also be scanned or downloaded from a digital camera. Tell students to play around with fonts and columns. They should experiment and be creative! Once pages are completed, they should be printed. The editorial staff should do a final reading for errors. Pages are then submitted to the teacher for publishing.

Distribute the class newspaper to the students and allow them time to read it. When they have finished, hand out the Newspaper Writing Assessment sheet and ask them to fill it out.

Newspaper Articles

Writer’s Workshop is a writing program for your whole family, from emergent writers right up to Mom and Dad. This is a sample exercise about writing newspaper articles. Try it with all your kids.

True Stories

This Writer’s Workshop exercise is from Writer’s Workshop True Stories, which teaches you to write all kinds of true stories about real people and events. You’ll write personal narratives, journals, biographies, autobiographies, newspaper articles, and more. During the unit, you will practice skills in a variety of exercises and then take a piece of writing clear through the writing process to publication. Teaching kids to write newspaper articles is an important skill.  Articles are written in a concise, descriptive way.  A lot of information is given with very few words, so the words need to be thoughtful and succinct.  We’ll teach you how to teach your kids to write a good newspaper article plus we give you a printable newspaper article template for the kids to create a great-looking project.

Step 1 Mini-Lesson

Start each Writer’s Workshop lesson off with a 5-10 minute mini-lesson with all of your kids. The sidebars of each Writer’s Workshop unit are lined with mini-lesson ideas to choose from. For this lesson, you could do a newspaper article warm-up.

Use a newspaper and separate a photograph from its article. Without reading the article at all, practice writing an article about what you think happened based only on the photograph. Have everyone read the article draft out loud, then read the real article out loud.

Step 2 Exercise: Newspaper Articles

Spend most of your Writer’s Workshop time on the exercise.

Newspaper articles typically begin with a single sentence that tells about the big moment, or the overall result of the story. In one line it reveals who, what, where, when, why, and how. Then the author jumps backward and fills in the details from the beginning.

  • The information should be factual.  You may want to note that even in our newspapers today the information is not always factual, but it SHOULD be.  You may even find some opinions or misrepresentations while looking through articles.
  •  Articles often start at the end of the story (or the most recent development), then go back and fill in the details.  For example, the article may say, “Tom Smithson, 35 years old, was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife, Theresa Smithson, yesterday in Grant County, Washington.”  After the overview, the article would go back and tell the rest of the story and how things led up to that recent development.
  • Articles include full names, dates, locations, and other specific details.
  • They avoid flowery language and use as few words as possible to tell what happened.
  • They have a professional tone, free from opinions.  If someone were writing about the Tom Jones tragedy I previously mentioned the next line would not be.  “He deserved it.”  Even if he did!

Local authorities arrested John Jones after he allegedly robbed the Big Gem Jewelry Store in Big Rock City last night using only a rock. Jones had been spotted casing the store over the past few days. He reportedly broke the front glass windows with the rock and entered the store around 10:30 P.M., loaded a single bag with jewels from a single display case, and then exited within 5 minutes, escaping on foot. Police officers arrived on the scene minutes later and pursued Jones. They captured him almost immediately and placed him under arrest. The rock was found at the scene. The Big Gem Jewelry Company has indicated that they plan to press charges.

Your Own Newspaper Articles

Now it’s your turn to practice writing some news stories. Write an article about the event below following the pattern of newspaper articles.

Passersby called the police when they noticed green slime coming out of the second-story windows of the office building.

Once you’ve practiced on this imaginary story, choose another true story to write an article about. You can get information about current events from the newspaper, internet news, or a television newscast. You could also use a story from your family or from your own community. Use the newspaper writing template to write your story. Add a headline, a picture, your article, and an About the Author section.

This exercise will go into the journal section of the Writer’s Notebook if you just made a quick draft, or in the Writing section of your Writer’s Notebook if you choose to take it through the writing process. Step 3: Writing Project

Most exercises stay in the Writer’s Notebook to be used a reference, inspiration, or to be tossed at a later date. About once a month, one piece of writing should be taken clear through the writing process. This is your writing project.

If I were to guide my child through taking this exercise through the writing process I would encourage him to not only edit and revise the article but also add several more newspaper articles about various subjects. He would add colorful pictures and captions. I may even ask him to add sections to his newspaper – comics, the weather, or classified ads. The project would involve not just a single article that is edited and revised, but rather, a whole newspaper with several pages filled with articles.

Step 4: Evaluating Writing

Every piece of writing that makes it to publication needs to be shared with an audience and then evaluated. The audience should cheer for the writer and ask curious and positive questions about the writing when appropriate. Evaluations should be designed to help the writer grow, not just to create a grade. Every Writer’s Workshop Unit comes with specific helps for the mentor, including a rubric that is specific to the genre being taught. In this era of working from home and schooling from home and exercising from home and making sourdough from home, the question will soon present itself: What else is there to do from home?

For kids, the answer might be to publish a newspaper from home. And now there are ample apps and websites to turn their ideas into real publications.

Kids starting their own paper is like a dam with a crack. And the moment they realize they have complete agency to report what they want, write what they want, as well as add comics? That’s the flood.

The upsides to a homegrown newspaper are myriad. Kids learn how to investigate and listen, differentiate between reliable and unreliable sources, research and fact-check, and, perhaps most importantly, learn that their own interests have value. Plus a kitchen-table newspaper does wonders for a child’s writing and editing skills.

Children by their very inquisitiveness have the makings of a great journalists. Can wood melt? How do you make an iPhone? Where does God live? Could this egg become a chicken? They are innately curious, naturally unbiased and typically don’t let up until their questions are answered.

Here are some instructions for any budding journalists wishing to embark on a do-it-yourself literary adventure.

Start with the name.

Most people find that the most inspiring first step is titling the publication. Maybe the newspaper is named after the kids’ neighborhood, state or dog. Add a secondary word like Dealer, Daily, Weekly, Post, Bulletin, Sentinel, Gazette, Tribune, Globe, Observer, Journal or even Picayune, and you’ve got yourself a newspaper name. Norman’s Herald, The Cheviot Hills Chronicle, The 135th Street Times — they all sound highly credible.

Select a focus.

Next, they need to think about what topics they want to cover. If kids actually sit at a table and write down all of their ideas, they have technically had their first editorial meeting. Discipline and structure aren’t going to be the easiest skills to embrace (they are likely to be the hardest), but they are necessary. Even in the loosest possible way.

Create sections.

Coming up with story ideas can be daunting, especially to little kids, so maybe start with the sections they want: sports, school, climate. Or perhaps politics, opinion or comics, jokes and games. Pets and snacks and presidential cartoons? Sure! Even the vaguest idea of sections will inform the work ahead. (Kids can skip this step and jump right into content, but that approach has a greater chance of confusion, infighting and slammed doors.)

Delegate responsibilities.

Whether working with siblings or other kids remotely, the teamwork required in establishing duties and meting out responsibilities cannot be underestimated. This phase is guaranteed to raise tempers; there may be tears. You may want to skip this phase altogether, but that’s a bad idea, unless you plan to publish “The Lord of the Flies Herald.” Once you have a sports editor, someone in charge of the cover art, a photo director, a makeshift city desk, perhaps even a food critic, tasks will flow easier and kids will come out stronger on the other side.

(Note: This even works if a single child is producing the whole paper — it helps to know the different jobs there are to do.)

Gather the stories.

The first thing a reporter needs to know is where to get information. This is a great opportunity for kids to learn the difference between primary sources (an interview with the owner of a local music store) and secondary sources (reading a reliable article about the best music of 2020). While primary sources are always preferable, they’re not always necessary — and an interview with Camila Cabello is probably not in the cards.

The best reporting usually involves interviewing an expert. This might sound daunting until they realize: Everyone is an expert in something. The expert may be a teacher or a student talking about virtual learning, the owner of a dog rescue explaining how to adopt a pit bull or a local librarian on the best scary books for fifth graders.

The young reporter’s job is to find experts who can supply information that is both factual and relevant.

It may not always be possible to obtain interviews, so an understanding of credible online sources is important. Any Google search will most likely take the reporter to Wikipedia, for example. But given that it is a crowdsourced content hub, Wikipedia cannot be trusted as a credible source. A good alternative is brittanica.com , any website with a .gov or .edu address, a reliable newspaper or Google Scholar (which is reliable, if a bit dense for kids).

Start writing.

For the novice, a question-and-answer format is a great place to start since it doesn’t require much writing beyond transcribing the interview. Writing an actual article — one with an introduction, supporting facts and a conclusion — is terrific practice and often mirrors what sixth and seventh graders are learning in school. (It’s also fun to pick out examples of writing forms for kids to play with: profiles, recipes, captions, news blurbs, even hot takes.)

Remember the puzzles and the comics.

History tells us that a newspaper is not a newspaper without a crossword. If there was ever a place to put arbitrary facts to good use, it is here. Puzzlemaker.discoveryeducation.com or CreateWordSearchPuzzle.com do the work of building the puzzle, so the kids can focus on the theme, the words and the clues.

The comics section will not be a hard sell. And while a child’s initial attempts may not reach the level of uproarious, they are creative-inspiration gold. Websites like storyboardthat.com and canva.com let the artist choose a scene, select a template and drop in characters.

Teach the value of intellectual property.

For a lot of kids, creating a piece of journalism will seem as simple as cutting and pasting an article from The New York Times and putting it in quotation marks with an attribution at the end. A teaching moment! Have them put that piece in their own words and get another source. But plagiarism goes beyond cutting and pasting. Encourage children to ask themselves where the idea came from, if they used any of the same words as one of their sources, or if they borrowed a phrase, joke or idea from someone else and forgot to give credit.

Call in the art department.

The creative director is very likely to be the same person as the sports editor and the crossword writer. Again, the rules of plagiarism apply: An amazing picture of a polar bear in the local paper is not up for grabs without permission or proper attribution. Kids can explore a stock website, like istockphoto.com , which has a massive inventory of images for sale.

Put it all together.

Making it look like a real newspaper is the fun part. My Newspaper app (available on an iPhone or iPad), newspaperclub.com and makemynewspaper.com are all user-friendly options with pre-existing templates. Should the newspaper become a magazine, websites like flipsnack.com and canva.com can accommodate templates, layouts and printing.

For distribution, kids can walk around the neighborhood, pass it out on the corner, maybe even start their own newspaper bike route. Just be sure each copy has an email address so that readers can comment on all the hard work.

Newspaper reports are written for different audiences – the same story could be covered in a tabloid , or a broadsheet newspaper.

However, there are likely to be differences in the way the story is reported and presented - starting with the headlines :

Tabloid headlines often use humour. They might also slightly exaggerate (only slightly, though!). They often feature alliteration .

Tabloids often use shock tactics to make their headlines dramatic and enticing. On the other hand, the headlines in broadsheet newspapers tend to be less dramatic, appealing to an audience interested in reading longer articles:

Whether they’re writing for tabloids or broadsheets, journalists use facts to add substance and authority. Simple, succinct information can help to clarify specific details.

After the headline, comes the by-line . A by-line can just say who wrote the article, or it might add a short summary.

Articles often follow an ordered structure, starting with the lead paragraph . The format is similar for either a tabloid or a broadsheet. Stories tend to start with the main news facts: what happened, when, who was involved and why it happened?

Then, in the main body of the article, we might find more details - facts, stats, quotations from relevant people or, perhaps, analysis. The main events of the story are described in chronological order. Quotes are often the heart of an article, and journalists try to build a picture of how this story fits into current trends or the wider world. The summary might point to the future.

So, the same story, a similar structure, but with a different approach to writing - to appeal to different audiences.

Informal, straightforward language in the tabloid, contrasted with more formal, often more complex language in the broadsheet.

And alongside the article, there’s the layout, presentation and images to consider, but that’s another story altogether.

History of newspapers

The first regular recorded news service was the Acta Diurna (Daily Acts), which was published in ancient Rome from 59 BC. News was carved into stone or metal and displayed in public places. It contained births, marriages, deaths, and important announcements from Emperors to Roman citizens.

In the 17th century, newspapers in Europe were mostly business and trade newsletters, with political news from across the globe. News was censored if, for example, the government did not want people to read about bad news from wars or other events. The first daily newspaper in the UK, The Daily Courant, was produced by Elizabeth Mallet in 1702.

By the 19th and 20th century there were newspapers all around the world. Freedom and censorship of the press was different in every region – as it is today. Many newspapers gained more readers and made money by publishing ‘news’ that was entertaining, scandalous and sensationalised.

Now in the 21st century, newspapers are also online, competing with free alternative news sources from social media and websites.

Broadsheets v tabloids

Broadsheets.

  • Historically broadsheets close broadsheet A newspaper with large format regarded as serious. were much larger than tabloid newspapers.
  • They first appeared in the 18th century to reduce the number of pages a newspaper needed, so as to reduce the amount of tax paid.
  • As they focused on political and business news, they had fewer readers.
  • They tend to have more in-depth, longer articles.
  • Traditionally, tabloid close tabloid A newspaper smaller than a broadsheet, with many images and sensational headlines. newspapers, were significantly smaller than broadsheets.
  • Their content was viewed as less ‘serious,’ less in-depth, for entertainment and easier to read.
  • Sometimes known as ‘red tops’ in the UK they were instantly recognisable because of their red mastheads close masthead The newspaper’s title or name, displayed on the front page. .
  • Also recognisable by their large photographs and less text on the front page.

However, both tabloid and broadsheet newspapers have shared elements of serious news, business, general interest and entertainment. Today, some of the traditional broadsheet newspapers have become smaller in size and some newspapers are now entirely online – so it is not as easy to split them into these two types.

Headlines and by-lines

To attract people to buy and read the news, newspaper articles need to grab readers’ attention. One way every article does this is through the use of headlines.

Headlines close headlines Headlines are headings that title newspaper articles. inform the reader about the content and purpose of the article. Headlines are usually short and remove unnecessary words, for example, this headline: ‘Baby found alive after earthquake’ has removed all the little words: A baby is found alive after an earthquake.

Headlines can:

  • be informative
  • be humorous
  • use famous quotes
  • use puns (word play) or alliteration close alliteration The repetition of the same sounds or consonants in two more words nearby each other.
  • make bold statements
  • ask a question
  • shock the reader

They are often accompanied by subheadlines or subheadings. A subheadline is a smaller title beneath the headline that adds information or makes it clearer what the article is about.

Near the headline or sub-headline, there is a by-line. By-lines give the names of the journalists that are involved in researching, writing and contributing to an article. This gives credibility to an article by showcasing the author, who may be an expert or well-informed about the subject matter in the article.

Puns and linguistic fun in headlines

Grabbing the reader’s attention through headlines needs more than a big bold font. The words selected for headlines are important. The way they are arranged requires linguistic creativity. Since headlines need to be short and punchy, linguistic devices close linguistic devices Words or phrases that convey a deeper meaning than the literal one. can be used to create as much impact as possible in the least number of words.

Images and influence

To attract a reader's attention, newspaper articles often use images that support the headline and the content in articles. Photographs in a newspaper are chosen by a picture editor and these choices play a crucial role in determining the look of a newspaper, especially the front page.

Photographs can provide evidence that the news article is authentic and truthful. They are usually accompanied by captions, below the picture, which describe what is happening in the picture.

Images can also include infographics, timelines, graphs – all of which collate and breakdown large and complex information for readers. Other images such as caricatures (distorted and exaggerated cartoons) can also be used to mock and parody close parody An imitation of something with deliberate exaggeration for a comedic effect. the subjects of the article.

Why images are used

Images provide fast and easily accessible information. The choice of photograph also plays a key role in influencing the reading of a story.

Images can influence readers through their ability to:

  • evoke emotion
  • ‘see’ what is being written about
  • allow the reader to view the evidence for themselves

News Articles For Kids – Lesson Ideas

It’s important to raise kids with a sense of global citizenship and community awareness, and what better way is there to do this then to introduce children to the world of news?  When teaching kids about news articles it’s helpful to dissect the genre itself: define it’s characteristics, read plenty of examples and look for stylistic elements.  Once that’s done, you may have just prepared your students to be critical readers of the news, and perhaps even effective news article writers!  Below is a list of steps I recommend if you plan on teaching writing news articles for kids.  Take a look:

Discuss Non-Fiction Features

It’s essential that students understand that news articles fall within “non-fiction” texts.  They should know that this means the news is meant to: inform, be factual and provide useful details.  This is also a great time to talk with kids about how there are different forms of news articles such as weather, sports, investigative and more.  This is best done by examining a newspaper together.

Study News Articles and Features

Put all your useful discussions about news articles to good use by examining many different articles as a class.  The more exposure students have to various articles, the better of an understanding they will have when constructing meaning based on them.  As important as it is to study news articles, it’s also important to give students varied practice and areas of focus in order to maximize their overall benefit. Here are some ideas:

Practice Writing with Graphic Organizers

Once students have really gotten a hang of reading news articles with understanding, it’s time to transition to writing a news article.  Review all of the lessons used to get to this point: non-fiction elements, news article text features and the structure of a news article.  Then, have students find an event they would like to write about.  To make it easier for students, give them a broad range of topics such as past or present events, private or public events (for example: a birthday party, or a community carnival they attended), or have writing prompts available for students who are having difficulty thinking of an idea (for example, give students the prompt of writing about a recent school assembly or field trip).

How awesome would it be to use your class’s news articles to create a class newspaper for all the kids in the class to see.  It would take some crafting, but it would it be worth it!

Newspaper writing activity ideas for KS2

In my school, this KS2 newspaper report activity formed part of a ‘looking at information texts’ literacy project. The activity delivered great results. Children contributed imaginative language to stories that were both inventive and genuinely funny.

Preparing for the activity

Although many newspaper reports are not suitable for general reading at KS2, most local papers or specialist children’s newspapers contain plenty of suitable content.

Prior to this activity, look at some newspapers in detail and talk about their constituent parts, such as:

  • advice columns
  • sports section
  • business news

Information texts

Start with a whole-class activity. Look at a few news stories covering a range of subjects. Our session included a story about the London Marathon; one about healthy eating and a report of a T-Rex skeleton that was going to auction.

Lead a discussion. Encourage children to talk about why these subjects are interesting to people. How does the language used make the written stories seem both interesting and exciting?  

Exciting writing

Next, look at these stories in more detail. Write lists of the words children think were chosen specifically to add interest.

For example, our T-Rex story included words such as  menacing pose , and  bloodthirsty stance . Get the pupils to work in groups to write their own short news story using the title, ‘Giant, hairy creature spotted in [your location]’. Aim to make it as exciting as possible.

Each group might have a different take on the topic. You can also do this as a whole-class activity.  

Write a KS2 newspaper report

Now, working in groups of two to three, give the children an envelope containing two short news story cuttings, plus two unrelated newspaper picture cuttings.

We used stories about ‘King Charles visits Dunfermline’ and ‘Twins grow record-breaking pumpkin’, plus pictures of a squirrel and a wedding cake. 

Support the pupils to write their own short news stories combining at least two of their given cuttings.

Remind them to consider elements they’ve already covered, such as language choice, and to think about how they can combine seemingly unrelated things (such as a squirrel and King Charles’ Dunfermline visit) in a funny or unexpected way.  

Structuring writing

To help structure their stories, give children a simple framework to work with, and display it on the board.

  • headline  (title)
  • byline  (names of people writing the article)
  • location  (explains where the story takes place at the beginning of the story)
  • story  (the main part – who, what, when, why, and how
  • supporting information  (any extra facts that are relevant)

Make sure to talk about all these terms and what they mean. 

Newsreader activity

Pupils can create their own images to accompany their news stories, and then finish off the workshop with a fun newsreader activity.

Staying in their groups, ask children to pretend to be newsreaders, taking turns to read their stories to the rest of the class. Be mindful that not everyone likes to read in front of others.

For the finale, work to combine all the news stories into a class newspaper.

If you want to expose children to the language and layouts of newspaper but you’re worried about them coming across unsuitable material, try a specialist children’s newspaper such as First News.

Literary resources website Plazoom has a large collection of news story clippings from the paper that you can download for free , alongside Topical Tuesdays activity sheets that help you explore the chosen news report as a class.

‘Hack’ and edit websites

This free lesson plan uses a free tool called  Hackasaurus , which allows you to change the content of other people’s websites.

Using Hackasaurus, you can ‘hack’ any website and change it to display the content that you provide (this works particularly well with news providers). It is extremely easy to do and will look more authentic than creating a whole website from scratch.

But don’t worry, although it will look genuine, the website won’t really be hacked – it’s just a very real-looking copy. The internet police won’t be knocking on your door.

Writing is a complex skill. A very complex skill.

Not only do we put students under pressure to master the inconsistent spelling patterns and complex grammar of the English language, but we require them to know how to write for a variety of purposes in both fiction and nonfiction genres.

On top of this, writing is just one aspect of one subject among many.

The best way to help our students to overcome the challenge of writing in any genre is to help them to break things down into their component parts and give them a basic formula to follow.

In this article, we will break article writing down into its components and present a formulaic approach that will provide a basic structure for our students to follow.

Once this structure is mastered, students can, of course, begin to play with things.

But, until then, there is plenty of room within the discipline of the basic structure for students to express themselves in the article form.

The Cambridge Dictionary defines an article as, “a piece of writing on a particular subject in a newspaper or magazine, or on the internet.”

An article’s shape and structure will vary depending on whether it’s intended for publication in a newspaper, magazine, or online.

Each of these media has its own requirements. For example, a magazine feature article may go into great depth on a topic, allowing for long, evocative paragraphs of exposition, while an online blog article may be full of lots of short paragraphs that get to the point without too much fanfare.

Each of these forms makes different demands on the writer, and it’s for this reason that most newspapers, magazines, and big websites provide writers with specific submission guidelines.

So, with such diverse demands placed on article writers, how do we go about teaching the diverse skill required to our students?

Luckily, we can break most types of articles down into some common key features.

Below we’ll take a look at the most important of these, along with an activity to get your students practicing each aspect right away.

Finally, we’ll take a look at a few general tips on article writing.

KEY WRITTEN FEATURES OF AN ARTICLE

The headline.

The purpose of the headline is to capture the reader’s attention and let them know what the article is about. All of this in usually no more than 4 or 5 words!

There is an art to good headline writing and all sorts of literary devices (e.g alliteration and metaphor) can be used to create an eye-catching and intriguing headline.

The best way for students to learn how headlines work is to view some historical samples.

Newspaper headlines especially are known for being short and pithy. Here are just a few examples to whet the appetite:

  • Hitler Is Dead
  • Lincoln Shot
  • Men Walk On The Moon
  • Berlin Wall Crumbles

You could encourage students to find some pithy examples of their own. It’s amazing how much information can be condensed into so few words – this is the essence of good headline writing.

Headlines Practice Activity:

Give students opportunities to practice headline writing in isolation from article writing itself. For example, take sample stories from newspapers and magazines and challenge students to write new headlines for them. Set a word limit appropriate to the skills and age of the students. For example, younger, more inexperienced students might write 9-word headlines, while older, more skilled students might thrive with the challenge of a 4-word limit.

THE SUBHEADING

Subheadings give the reader more information on what the article is about. For this reason, they’re often a little longer than headlines and use a smaller font, though still larger (or in bold) than the font used in the body of the text.

Subheadings provide a little more of the necessary detail to inform readers what’s going on. If a headline is a jab, the subheading is the cross.

In magazines and online articles especially, there are often subheadings throughout the article. In this context, they let the reader know what each paragraph/section is about.

Subheadings also help the reader’s eye to scan the article and quickly get a sense of the story, for the writer they help immensely to organize the structure of the story.

Practice Activity:

One way to help organize paragraphs in an article is to use parallel structure.

Parallel structure is when we use similar words, phrases, and grammar structures. We might see this being used in a series of subheadings in a ‘How to’ article where the subheadings all start with an imperative such as choose , attach , cut , etc.

Have you noticed how all the sections in this ‘Key Features’ part of this article start simply with the word ‘The’? This is another example of a parallel structure.

Yet another example of parallel structure is when all the subheadings appear in the form of a question.

Whichever type of parallel structure students use, they need to be sure that they all in some way relate to the original title of the article.

To give students a chance to practice writing subheadings using parallel structure, instruct them to write subheadings for a piece of text that doesn’t already have them.

THE BODY PARAGRAPHS

Writing good, solid paragraphs is an art in itself. Luckily, you’ll find comprehensive guidance on this aspect of writing articles elsewhere on this site.

But, for now, let’s take a look at some general considerations for students when writing articles.

The length of the paragraphs will depend on the medium. For example, for online articles paragraphs are generally brief and to the point. Usually no more than a sentence or two and rarely more than five.

This style is often replicated in newspapers and magazines of a more tabloid nature.

Short paragraphs allow for more white space on the page or screen. This is much less daunting for the reader and makes it easier for them to focus their attention on what’s being said – a crucial advantage in these attention-hungry times.

Lots of white space makes articles much more readable on devices with smaller screens such as phones and tablets. Chunking information into brief paragraphs enables online readers to scan articles more quickly too, which is how much of the information on the internet is consumed – I do hope you’re not scanning this!

Conversely, articles that are written more formally, for example, academic articles, can benefit from longer paragraphs which allow for more space to provide supporting evidence for the topic sentence.

Deciding on the length of paragraphs in an article can be done by first thinking about the intended audience, the purpose of the article, as well as the nature of the information to be communicated.

A fun activity to practice paragraphing is to organize your students into groups and provide them with a copy of an article with the original paragraph breaks removed. In their groups, students read the article and decide on where they think the paragraphs should go.

To do this successfully, they’ll need to consider the type of publication they think the article is intended for, the purpose of the article, the language level, and the nature of the information.

When the groups have finished adding in their paragraph breaks they can share and compare their decisions with the other groups before you finally reveal where the breaks were in the original article.

Article Photos and Captions

Photos and captions aren’t always necessary in articles, but when they are, our students must understand how to make the most of them.

Just like the previous key features on our list, there are specific things students need to know to make the most of this specific aspect of article writing.

  The internet has given us the gift of access to innumerable copyright-free images to accompany our articles, but what criteria should students use when choosing an image?

To choose the perfect accompanying image/s for their article, students need to identify images that match the tone of their article.

Quirky or risque images won’t match the more serious tone of an academic article well, but they might work perfectly for that feature of tattoo artists.

Photos are meant to bring value to an article – they speak a thousand words after all. It’s important then that the image is of a high enough resolution that the detail of those ‘thousand words’ is clearly visible to the reader.

Just as the tone of the photo should match the tone of the article, the tone of the caption should match the tone of the photo.

Captions should be informative and engaging. Often, the first thing a reader will look at in an article is the photos and then the caption. Frequently, they’ll use the information therein to decide whether or not they’ll continue to read.

When writing captions, students must avoid redundancy. They need to add information to that which is already available to the reader by looking at the image.

There’s no point merely describing in words what the reader can clearly see with their own two eyes. Students should describe things that are not immediately obvious, such as date, location, or the name of the event.

One last point, captions should be written in the present tense. By definition, the photo will show something that has happened already. Despite this, students should write as if the action in the image is happening right now.

Remind students that their captions should be brief; they must be careful not to waste words with such a tight format.

For this fun activity, you’ll need some old magazines and newspapers. Cut some of the photos out minus their captions. All the accompanying captions should be cut out and jumbled up. It’s the students’ job to match each image with the correct accompanying caption.

Students can present their decisions and explanations when they’ve finished.

A good extension exercise would be to challenge the students to write a superior caption for each of the images they’ve worked on.

TOP 5 TIPS FOR ARTICLE WRITING

Now your students have the key features of article writing sewn up tightly, let’s take a look at a few quick and easy tips to help them polish up their general article writing skills.

1. Read Widely – Reading widely, all manner of articles, is the best way students can internalize some of the habits of good article writing. Luckily, with the internet, it’s easy to find articles on any topic of interest at the click of a mouse.

2. Choose Interesting Topics – It’s hard to engage the reader when the writer is not themselves engaged. Be sure students choose article topics that pique their own interest (as far as possible!).

3. Research and Outline – Regardless of the type of article the student is writing, some research will be required. The research will help an article take shape in the form of an outline. Without these two crucial stages, articles run the danger of wandering aimlessly and, worse still, of containing inaccurate information and details.

4. Keep Things Simple – All articles are about communicating information in one form or another. The most effective way of doing this is to keep things easily understood by the reader. This is especially true when the topic is complex.

5. Edit and Proofread – This can be said of any type of writing, but it still bears repeating. Students need to ensure they comprehensively proofread and edit their work when they’ve ‘finished’. The importance of this part of the writing process can’t be overstated.

In this lesson, students will write a news article for the school newspaper. The lesson begins with a discussion about freedom of speech and the important role it plays in journalism. Next, students will learn how to create news articles by developing 'lead paragraphs' and by using the 'inverted pyramid' model. Once this is done, they will be given time during class to select topics, conduct research, write their articles and proof read and peer edit their own and other's works.

Students will:

  • understand journalistic terms and vocabulary

  • produce and publish written work, using appropriate technology
  • analyse and assess the information and ideas gathered from a variety of print and electronic sources

Newspapers Part 4: Writing a Feature Article

This collection of free resources can be used to help your student writers as they begin writing feature articles for their own classroom newspaper., this is part 4 in our series on newspapers and focuses on how to teach students to write feature articles..

As part of our series on studying and writing newspapers in the classroom, we are focusing on helping writers learn how to write feature articles for newspapers.

Newspapers in the Classroom Part 4: Writing Feature Articles Free from The Curriculum Corner

We suggest taking the students through the entire writing process of writing a feature article by modeling how to use each graphic organizer in this set.  In that way students will see how all of the organizers flow together to write the article.

The graphic organizers for this writing newspapers post (with the exception of  one anchor chart) are linked at the bottom of the explanation of lessons.

Ready to focus on writing feature articles you will find our lesson ideas below:.

Lesson 1: Determine Your PAT (Purpose, Audience, Topic) –  Start by brainstorming some good feature article topics.    Use the graphic organizer we have provided to model how to focus on a purpose, audience and topic for a feature article.  Be prepared to use that topic in a guided writing exercise with your students.

Lesson 2: Writing Engaging Leads – Use our  Top Ten Ways to Write Engaging Leads Chart  (click the title to download)  to show students several ways to write creative leads for their feature articles.  One way to make sure students understand each technique is to take the topic that was chosen in the previous lesson and have students practice writing leads in each of the top ten ways.  (You may want to put them into groups for this and assign techniques.)

We have also provided a lined page for practicing leads.  Each has three lined boxes so students can draft a different techniques to determine the best. Some explanations and examples of the techniques on the anchor chart are shown below in case you want to use them as illustrations:

  • Lead with a Question   – Helps to immediately get your reader thinking and wondering about the answer  (Have you ever thought about how doughnuts are made?)
  • Lead with Dialog  – Introduces the reader to the subjects in the article (“From the time I was only a child, I have always been interested in horses and how to take care of them,” explained Dr. Smith.)
  • Lead with a Famous Quote  – Makes the reader want to know how this quote relates to the topic of the article (“To be…or not to be.”  That is the question that twelve-year old Noah seemed to be asking of his friends.)
  •   Lead with Onomatopoeia  – A sound effect can create immediate interest in the topic of the article (CRACK! The lightning cut through the old barn and the fire ignited.)
  •   Lead with Action  – Gets the reader to start visualizing what has happened (The girls’ horse got spooked and was out of control – running wildly around the field.)
  •   Lead with a Small Moment  – Gives the reader a snapshot of something that happened to the subject of the article (The football spiraled through the air towards the receiver and the fans held their breath to see if it would be caught and their dreams of a sectional victory would come true.)
  •   Lead with the Ending  – Creates interest in how the story came to that point (It was the first and last time that 30-year old Doug Henry would get the chance to see a space shuttle take off.)
  •   Lead with an Interesting Fact  – Teaches the reader something new and sparks interest in the topic (The Kentucky Derby had its first winner in 1875 when Aristides outran his other four-legged foes.)
  •   Lead with Strong Feeling or Emotion  – Gets the reader to feel something that will make him/her want to read further (When 22-year old Marian’s dog Pumpkin died, she felt lost and wasn’t sure she would ever be able to find a pet so loyal.)
  •   Start with a Flashback   – Helps the reader to relate to the subject or topic of the article (18-year old Aidan only overslept once in all his years of school, but turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to him.)

L esson 3: Organizing a Feature Article   – Use our graphic organizer to model how students should be thinking about the organization of a feature article.  It needs to make sense and flow well, in addition to including critical and pertinent information.   It is also important to note that an article might not require all parts of this organizer.  This is a two page organizer that has a box for the lead and then boxes for students to describe the who, what, when, where and why of their topic.  It also contains a box for other important information that may be important to add.

Lesson 4: Drafting a Feature Article –  Use this final graphic organizer as simply a place to write a first draft for a feature article.  It is labeled with the words lead , body and closing  as a reminder to include all parts.  Again, we recommend that you model how to use this graphic organizer by continuing the writing process with the article the class chose at the beginning of these lessons.

A newspaper article should provide an objective, factual account of an event, person, or place. Most newspaper articles are read quickly or skimmed by the reader, so the most important information should always appear first, followed by descriptive content that rounds out the story. By conducting research and following the correct organizational structure, you can create an informative newspaper article in no time.

Conducting Interviews and Research

Step 1 Contact sources for the article.

  • Your sources should be experts in the field your article is focusing on, such as a certified professional, a professor, or an academic. You can use sources that have extensive experience or background in a field that relates to your article.
  • Sources like a witness to an event can also be useful, especially if they have first-hand experience of the topic you are covering.

Step 2 Conduct interviews with your sources.

  • You may need to conduct more than 1 interview with your sources, especially if they are a major source for the article. You can also send follow-up questions to your sources as needed.
  • You will need to transcribe your interviews by typing them up to ensure you quote your sources correctly. Having transcriptions will also make fact checking your article and backing up your sources much easier.

Step 3 Look up public information on the topic at your local library and online.

  • Make sure you cite the information properly in your article by noting the name or organization that provided the information. You should have credible sources to back up any claims or arguments made in the article.

Step 4 Fact check any statistics or numbers before you use them in the article.

  • If you are writing the newspaper article for an editor, they may require you to provide a list of your sources for the article to show you have fact checked your work.

Structuring the Article

Step 1 Create an engaging, informative headline.

  • For example, you may create a headline like, “Teen Girl Missing in Okotoks” or “Congress Stalls on Family Planning Bill.”
  • In some cases, it may be easier to save the headline for last, after you have written the article, so you know what the focus of the article is and can sum it up clearly.

Step 2 Open the article with a “lead” first sentence.

  • For example, you may write a lead like, "An outbreak of flu in San Francisco has led to 3 elementary school closings this week, according to school officials." Or, "A missing girl originally from Okotoks was found Monday in an abandoned cabin in the Minnetonka area, according to local police."

Step 3 Place information chronologically, starting with the most current, important details.

  • For example, you may write, “10-12 students have been diagnosed with the flu and health officials fear it could continue to spread if it is not contained.”

Step 4 Expand on key details in the rest of the article.

  • For example, you may write, “The teen girl was reported missing on Friday afternoon by her mother after she did not come home from a study date at a friend’s house. She is the second girl to be reported missing in the past 2 weeks from the Okotoks area.”

Step 5 Include at least 2-3 supporting quotations from sources.

  • For example, you may write, “‘The girl is shaken, but does not appear to have any serious injuries,’ stated local Police Chief Wilborn.” Or you may write, “According to a statement by school officials, ‘The shutdown will prevent the flu from spreading further and ensure the safety of our students.’”
  • Avoid using long quotes or more than 4 quotes in the article, as the reader may get confused or lost if there are too many quotations.

Step 6 End with an informative quote or a link to more information.

  • For example, you may write, “The girl’s mother expressed relief for her daughter and concern about her community, noting, ‘I just hope no other girls go missing in this area.’”
  • Or you may write, “Local health officials are urging parents to check the municipal health and wellness website, www.hw.org, for updates on when schools are able to reopen.”

Creating the Appropriate Voice and Tone

Step 1 Use specific, clear language that is easy to follow.

  • For example, rather than write, “The missing girl’s mother thought it had to do with school,” you may write, “The missing girl’s mother thought bullying at school may have caused her daughter’s absences.”

Step 2 Write in the active, third person voice.

  • For example, rather than write, “A press conference will be held by local police tomorrow to address the missing girls and the public’s concerns,” you may write, “Local police will address the missing girls and the public’s concerns in a press conference tomorrow.”

Step 3 Maintain an objective, informative tone in the article.

  • For example, if you're writing about two political candidates running against each other in an election, present both candidates in an equal light, rather than giving extra details about 1 candidate.
  • If you're writing an op-ed piece, it's okay to mix some of your opinions with the facts.

Polishing the Article

Step 1 Read the article aloud.

  • Reading the article aloud can also help you catch any spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors.

Step 2 Show the article to others for critique and feedback.

  • For example, you may ask others questions like, “Were you able to understand what happened, based on the information in the article?” “Was the language clear and easy to follow?” “Was the article well supported with sources and quotes?”

Step 3 Revise the article for voice, tone, and length.

  • If you are writing the newspaper article for a class, make sure it falls within the prescribed word limit for the assignment.

Western Australia has introduced a limit on ham in school canteens. Parents are reportedly confused and frustrated . So what has changed and what evidence is it based on?

Reclassifying processed meats

The WA Department of Health has reconfigured its system for classifying food and drink in public schools. It uses a traffic light approach, allocating green, amber or red colours to foods and drinks.

Ham and other processed red meats have been moved from an “amber” label to a “red” label.

Each colour is associated with restrictions on how food and drinks can be sold:

  • green items must account for at least 60% of items on a menu
  • amber items must account for less than 40% of items on a menu
  • red items cannot be on the menu.

There’s one catch. The new guidelines allow ham to be sold as if it is an amber item, only two days per week, if ham was already on a canteen’s menu prior to the reconfiguration.

Why restrict ham?

Singling out nutrients or foods as “good” or “bad” can lead to confusion and polarised views on diet. Rather than focusing on individual foods, long-term health outcomes are more closely linked to overall dietary patterns .

Ham itself is not inherently considered junk food. It’s a source of protein and many other nutrients.

However, certain types of ham products – especially highly processed or cured hams – are less healthy options for several reasons:

High sodium content

Many commercially available hams, especially highly processed and cured varieties, can be high in sodium , which is salt.

Excessive sodium intake is associated with health issues such as high blood pressure and can increase the risk of heart disease and strokes.

On average, Australian children consume more sodium than the recommended upper limit : 600 mg a day for children aged four to eight and 800 mg a day for those aged nine to 13.

The World Health Organization says reducing sodium is one of the most cost-effective ways nations can improve the health of their populations.

Some processed hams may contain additives , preservatives and flavour-enhancers we should limit.

Saturated fat

While ham is a good source of protein, certain cuts can be higher in saturated fat.

Any ham sold in canteens under the new rules (where ham is treated as an “amber” food until the canteen menu changes) must have less than 3g of saturated fat per 100g .

Diets high in saturated fat are linked to an increased risk of heart disease . However, not all research supports this claim .

Processing methods

The methods to process and cure ham may involve smoking, which can produce compounds such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. In large quantities, these may cause health concerns , including increasing the risk of bowel cancer.

What are some ham alternatives?

Lean, minimally processed ham, prepared without excessive sodium or additives, can potentially be a part of a healthy overall diet. And parents in WA can continue packing ham in their child’s lunchbox.

When choosing ham, read the labels and select products with a lower sodium content, minimal additives and healthier preparation methods.

When looking for low-salt alternatives to ham, there are several options to consider:

turkey breast . Turkey is a lean meat and can be a good substitute for ham. Look for low-sodium or no-salt-added varieties

chicken breast . Skinless, boneless chicken breast is a versatile and low-sodium option. Grilling, baking or roasting can add flavour without relying on salt

smoked salmon . While salmon naturally contains some sodium, smoked salmon tends to be lower in sodium than cured ham. Choose varieties with little or no added salt

roast beef . Choose lean cuts of roast beef and consider seasoning with herbs and spices instead of relying on salt for flavour

homemade roasts . Prepare your own roasts using lean meats such as pork loin, beef sirloin or lamb. This way, you have more control over the ingredients and can minimise added salt

grilled vegetables . These can be a tasty alternative to meat. Eggplant, zucchini, capsicum and portobello mushrooms have a satisfying texture and flavour

beans and legumes . Beans, lentils and chickpeas can be used as alternatives in various dishes. They are naturally low in sodium and high in protein and fibre.

What are some other lunchbox tips?

Packing lunchboxes can be challenging and frustrating for parents.

Consider planning ahead, involving your kids, reducing pre-packaged foods, balancing cost and convenience, and giving your kids lunchbox accountability.

One Utah paper is making money with a novel idea: print

At a time when many publishers are cutting print days, the Deseret News in Utah is finding success with a new print product.

Dubbed “The Digest,” the free publication amasses the Deseret News’s best journalism from its various platforms and is delivered to 120,000 homes around Salt Lake City once a month. The Digest launched in September and has been profitable since October, publisher Burke Olsen said.

“The result has been great enthusiasm from advertisers because this is now, I think, the largest newspaper product (in Utah). It has the largest distribution of any print product in the state that I’m aware of,” Olsen said. “It reinvigorated our advertising base.”

Executives at the Deseret News took inspiration from the company’s direct-mail advertising publication, Hometown Values, which is distributed for free to half a million Utah homes. They adopted a similar approach to create The Digest, which they insert into select copies of Hometown Values. Every month, they target certain ZIP codes in counties around Salt Lake City based on the audiences their advertisers are trying to reach.

The Digest has become a “marketing product that pays for itself,” Olsen said. It helps acquaint Utah residents with the Deseret News brand by republishing stories from the company’s website, newspaper, magazine and religion-focused publication. (Deseret News is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.)

Olsen estimated that a person who lives in one of the counties the Deseret News is targeting will receive The Digest about three times a year. The company wants The Digest to feel different from its other products, and it wants to make sure people do not receive it so often that they decide to abandon the Deseret News’ paid products.

“We tend to target established ZIP codes, more residential homes than rental areas, people who tend to have higher incomes — more disposable income — and that’s because that’s attractive to our advertising base,” Olsen said. “Over time, as we figure out on behalf of our advertisers what works and based on what kind of subscription uptick we get, we might focus on some ZIP codes more often than others.”

The Digest has nearly twice the audience as the Deseret News’ other print products — a selling point to advertisers — and the company expects to make $250,000 in profit off The Digest alone by the end of the year.

The Deseret News has already gotten phone calls from people who received The Digest and decided to subscribe to the biweekly paper, Olsen said. He speculated that a print paper taps into a certain nostalgia and its physicality lends readers a sense of accomplishment when they finish an issue.

Fifteen-year-old Adam Kunz said he discovered the benefits of physical papers when he came across a free sample from the Deseret News in the mail in November. Until then, he got most of his news through online aggregators like Google News. Newspapers were associated with “boring, old people stuff,” and Kunz hadn’t realized that the Deseret News was still printing physical copies of its paper.

He was surprised by how much he liked having a tangible paper in which stories were neatly packed. Kunz told his mother he wanted a Deseret News subscription for Christmas and that if she wouldn’t pay for it, he would buy it himself. Now, he starts and ends his days with the paper, reading a few stories at a time so that he can make the papers — which come twice a week — last.

Kunz said he especially likes following national news and political coverage, including stories about the election and bills passing through the legislature. He’s amassed a huge stack of papers in his bedroom. Though his friends and family sometimes tease him for paying for a newspaper subscription, Kunz insists they don’t understand “the experience of actually sitting down and flipping through the pages,” something he says is “awesome.”

“I think everyone has a responsibility to know what’s going on in the world.”

Before becoming publisher, Olsen worked as Deseret News’ head digital officer. “I didn’t care about our print products for a long time,” he admitted. But The Digest has made him wonder if there’s a product or marketing campaign that could slow or even reverse declines in print readership.

Though The Digest is still very new, Olsen has started to wonder if it might eventually outlive the Deseret News’ print paper. That is one of the things the company will be evaluating as The Digest moves forward.

“There may come a point at which this is no longer feasible and profitable because the cost of paper and postage continues to go up,” Olsen said. “But until it does, we ought to use as publishers, as news media, every avenue in creative ways of reaching audiences with journalism that will help them make better decisions … because they’re better informed about the world.”

You're never too young: Tax season is here and your kids may owe money to the IRS.

The IRS doesn’t care how old you are. If you have an income, it requires you to pay taxes, even if your first pimple hasn't appeared or you haven't learned to drive.

Any money from a summer or after-school job or through Roblox , YouTube or a youth trading account  should be reported if they hit certain thresholds, the IRS says.  

So, while it’s exciting for kids to earn their own money , it can be confusing (though educational) at tax time . 

Many questions come to mind: When must your kid file a return, who’s responsible for filing it and what's your child's tax rate? The answers depend on the kind and amount of income your kid earns.

Here’s how it works:

What are the different types of income? 

To decide if your dependent kid needs to file an income tax return, first know what kind of income was earned. Here are the types: 

Earned : Money you earned for work such as wages, tips, commissions, and any part of a taxable scholarship. 

Unearned : Investment income like interest, ordinary dividends, and capital gain distributions.  

Gross : Earned plus unearned income before taxes. 

How much does a minor have to make to file taxes?

For tax year 2023, your dependent child will have to file a tax return if he or she has: 

◾ Earned income above the standard deduction of $13,850 for anyone single and under 65 years old. For example, if your college student had a part-time job during the school year and a full-time summer job and earned $14,000 in total. 

◾ More than $1,250 in unearned income (in some instances, parents may add their kid’s unearned income to theirs on their tax return and skip the kid’s filing, but more on that later). For example, if your teenager invested during the year through a youth brokerage account and earned $1,500 in interest, dividends and capital gains. 

◾ Gross income greater than the larger of $1,250 or earned income plus $400 (up to $13,450). For example, if your kid received $800 taxable interest income and earned $4,750 from a part-time job (gross income of $4,750 + $800 = $5,500 is larger than earned income of $4,750 + $400 = $5,150) 

◾ Net earnings from self-employment of at least $400 because he, she or they will likely owe Social Security and Medicare tax. 

Should my kid file a tax return even if they don’t have to? 

Yes. Kids may want to file a tax return if federal taxes were withheld from their paychecks to get that refunded. Social Security and Medicare taxes, though, won’t be refunded. But your child may earn credits toward each. 

Note: Don't forget the state tax return! "You can get a refund federally, and especially at the state level," said Damien Martin, a certified public accountant in Chicago.

What’s the standard deduction for my child? 

For tax year 2023, a child’s standard deduction amount is the greater of $1,250, or the sum of $400 plus the child’s earned income, if you can claim the child as a dependent. Otherwise, the standard deduction for a single filer is $13,850.  

What tax forms do children use? 

This depends on what kind of income your child has and how you want to report it. If children have any earned income and must file a return, they use Form 1040 like everyone else. 

◾ If it’s only unearned income, kids can use Form 8615 to determine the tax to report on Form 1040 and attach the form. 

◾ In some instances, parents can use Form 8814 to include their dependent child’s unearned income on their own tax return if certain rules are met. Here's an example of that scenario: the child only had unearned income; their gross income was less than $11,000 and the child was under age 19 (or under age 24 if a full-time student) at the end of the year. 

Note: Filing a return doesn't mean the child is no longer a dependent, said Tim O'Saben, director of tax content and government relations at the nonprofit National Association of Tax Professionals. "There are specific tests to determine dependency and filing a return on your own is not one."

When can parents include their child’s income on their tax return? 

Only if it’s unearned income and above $1,250 , parents can choose to include the child’s unearned income on their tax return and skip filing an additional kid return.  

Parents can never claim a child's earned income or self-employment income and other types of income.

Should parents include their child’s income on their tax return? 

It may be easier than filing another return, but the IRS warns this could lead to a higher tax rate for your child’s income. 

“If your child received qualified dividends or capital gain distributions, you may pay up to $110 more tax if you make this election instead of filing a separate tax return for the child,” the IRS says. “This is because the tax rate on the child's income between $1,100 and $2,200 is 10% if you make this election. However, if you file a separate return for the child, the tax rate may be as low as 0% because of the preferential tax rates for qualified dividends and capital gain distributions.” 

The IRS also warns if you didn’t have enough tax withheld or pay enough estimated tax to cover what you owe, you may be subject to a penalty. 

Other possible disadvantages, according to H&R Block: 

You might have to pay more tax. Adding income to your return could: 

◾ Limit your IRA deduction. 

◾ Limit your student loan interest deduction.

◾ Limit your tuition and fees deduction. 

◾ Reduce amounts of itemized deductions, including medical expenses. 

Your adjusted gross income might increase, which: 

◾ Could affect your eligibility for certain credits, including the American Opportunity Credit , Lifetime Learning Credit, Earned Income Credit , Child and dependent care credit. 

◾ Could lead you to pay the Alternative Minimum Tax or increase the amount of AMT you owe. 

You can’t claim deductions on your return that your child would be eligible for if they had filed a separate return. 

What tax rates do children pay on their income? 

Most of the time, minors don’t earn enough to pay income tax. Usually, they would have to earn more than $13,850 and pay the same marginal tax rate as everyone else or $1,250 in unearned income.  

The first $1,250 in unearned income is tax-free, and the next $1,250 is subject to the  lowest marginal tax rate for a single filer of 10%. Any additional earnings above $2,500 are taxed at the greater of the child’s or the parents’ tax rate, or the “ kiddie tax .”  

The kiddie tax was first enacted as part of the Tax Reform Act of 1986 to prevent parents from putting assets into their children’s names and have the income derived from these assets potentially taxed at lower rates.

How much could a tax on a child’s income amount to for the tax collector? 

Quite a bit.

In tax year 2020 , for example, the IRS said about 466,224 taxpayers attached Form 8615, used to calculate the tax for unearned children’s income for a child tax bill of $1.154 billion. That's up from 415,725 filings and $1.095 billion in taxes in 2018 .

Who’s responsible for filing my kid’s tax return?

Generally, a child is responsible for filing their own tax return and for paying any tax, penalties, or interest on that return, the IRS said. However, if a child can’t file their own return for any reason, such as age, then the child's parent, guardian, or other legally responsible person must file for them. 

If the child can’t sign the return, a parent or guardian may sign the child’s name followed by the words “By (signature), parent (or guardian) for minor child” and deal with the IRS on any matters linked to the return. If a parent or guardian doesn’t sign the return on behalf of the child, they’re only entitled to pay the tax or provide information concerning the child's return. 

Can my child’s tax return get audited? 

Anyone’s tax return can be randomly chosen for an audit. 

“Sometimes returns are selected based solely on a statistical formula,” the IRS says . “We compare your tax return against "norms" for similar returns.”
