The first thing to do is to choose which image you want to use. Think about what you need to convey to find a matching photo, and keep in mind the overall style of the presentation, so that everything goes in harmony. You should also pay attention to the content, so that it does not lose visibility. Open the PowerPoint document, choose the slide you want to change the background and click on the Design section in the top menu. Then click on the Format Background tab. A new section will open on the right side. There, select the  Picture or Texture Fill - Insert option. Choose From a File to insert the image from your own pc or select any of the different options that appear, and you're done!

Among the options that will appear in the window on the right, you will find one to add transparency to the background image. In addition, whenever you want or need to revert the changes, you can click the Reset Background button to return to the original. 

On the other hand, if you want to apply the new photo to the whole presentation, just click on the bottom button Apply to All in the menu on the right. With this option, the background will also appear by default on the new slides you create.

Another option you can use to customize your presentation is to add a background color to a slide , as we are going to do below in the watercolor texture template. To do this, just click on the top menu Design - Format Background . A menu will open on the right. Choose the Solid Fill option and select the color of your choice (we recommend using the theme colors included in the template, to maintain visual harmony). As with the background image, here you can also click Apply to All to change it in the slide set.

There are other options that can help you add a different touch to your presentation, such as Gradient or Pattern, which you will also see in the right menu mentioned above.

A washed out image has a soft focus look to it.

You can blend images into the background in PowerPoint using a washout effect. This reduces the vibrancy of the colours, but the image stays visible. Using images with a washout effect is a good way of combining subtle information from pictures with a stronger text-based message.

Run PowerPoint. Click the “Insert Picture” icon, as it is known in PowerPoint 2003, or “Picture” icon in later versions. This shows an image of a mountain range beneath the sun. Alternatively, click “Insert,” slide the pointer through “Picture” and click “From File…”

  • You can blend images into the background in PowerPoint using a washout effect.
  • Click the “Insert Picture” icon, as it is known in PowerPoint 2003, or “Picture” icon in later versions.

Navigate to your picture. Click it. The picture appears on the PowerPoint slide. Reposition the image as required by dragging it. Resize the image by clicking and dragging the corner handles diagonally, one way or the other.

Right-click the image. Click “Format Picture…” Below "Image control" you will see "Color." It will probably be set to "Automatic." Click the down-arrow to the right of this. Select “Washout.” You can also adjust the brightness and contrast using the sliders, if you wish. Click “Preview” to see the effect. Click “OK” when the effect is as you want it.

Right-click the image again. Slide the pointer through “Order >.” Click “Send to Back.” The image now blends into the background. If you add text to the slide, it will be visible above the image.

You can make the image larger than the slide if you wish. Only the part of it contained within the slide will be visible when you run the presentation. However, this technique can be used to good effect.

A quick way to start a presentation is to press F5.

Need to remove a distracting background from an image? You don't need to use complicated software like Photoshop---use PowerPoint!

Removing a distracting background from an image allows your audience to focus on the subject matter. Microsoft PowerPoint provides a suite of basic image editing tools---including one that lets you remove the background from an image.

First, open PowerPoint and insert the image (Insert > Picture) that contains the background you want to remove.

Next, click the “Format” tab that appears once the image is inserted.

In the “Adjust” group, select the “Remove Background” option.

Once selected, the background of the image will become magenta while the foreground remains untouched. The portion of the image highlighted with magenta is the area to be removed.

PowerPoint is generally pretty good about accurately highlighting the correct areas you’d expect to be removed from an image, but as you can see from the below screenshot, it’s not always 100 percent accurate.

Luckily, we can manually mark parts of the image that we’d like to remove or keep by selecting “Mark Areas to Remove” or “Mark Areas to Keep,” respectively, from the “Refine” group.

In this example, we’ll remove the rest of the wooden background from our image, so we’ll select “Mark Areas to Remove.”

Once selected, your cursor will change to a drawing pencil. Click and drag the cursor around the areas you would like to remove (or keep). Once finished, click anywhere outside the image, and the changes will be reflected automatically.

Be sure to save your presentation (File > Save), so you don't lose your changes.

How to Use PowerPoint's Background Remover

When the background in a picture is a solid color, it's easy to remove the background so that only the main image appears in the picture. This allows text, a picture, or another color to show and is a way to blend your photos into the slide background seamlessly.

Open the PowerPoint presentation and go to the slide with the image to which you want to apply a transparent background.

Select the image. A new tab, Picture Tools Format , is added to PowerPoint.

If you have multiple images on a slide and can't select the one you want to work with, right-click any pictures that are on top of it and select Send to Back to temporarily move them out of the way.

Go to Picture Tools Format and select Remove Background . In PowerPoint for Mac, go to Picture Format and choose Remove Background .

PowerPoint colors the image pink to indicate the parts that it thinks is the background.

To customize which areas of the picture are kept and which are made transparent, choose either Mark Areas to Keep or Mark Areas to Remove to designate parts of the photo that should remain or be deleted. Then, draw a line around the area on the picture.

In PowerPoint for Mac, use What to keep or What to remove .

Select Keep Changes to apply the edits.

Sometimes, the image ends up with more or less transparency than you'd like it to have. If so, just repeat the steps above. PowerPoint saves all your changes and even lets you revert back to the original, non-transparent version.

To save the edited image to use elsewhere, right-click the image and select Save as Picture to save the picture with the transparent background on your computer.

Make a Single Color Transparent

There is another way to make a solid color in the image transparent. For instance, you can make a white background see-through.

Select the image and go to Picture Tools Format . Mac users need to select Picture Format . In Mac 2011, it's called Format Picture .

Select Color to display a list of color variations and choose Set Transparent Color .

Mac 2011 users must choose Recolor first, and then Set Transparent Color .

Select an area of the picture that is the color you want to make transparent.

Removing objects from a picture or deleting a solid color works best on images that are made up of simple colors, like clip art or cartoon-like photos. Photos and other complex images with multiple objects and similar color shades are difficult to edit in this way.

To make a picture transparent in PowerPoint, select the picture and then select the  Picture Format tab > Transparency . Select a preset transparency option or select Picture Transparency Options for more choices.

To make a shape transparent in PowerPoint , right-click the shape and select Format Shape . Expand the Fill menu and enter a value into the Transparency menu or use the slider to adjust transparency manually.

To crop a picture in PowerPoint , double-click the image to open the Picture Format tab and select Crop to crop an image according to shape, aspect ratio, and more. You can also grab the black frame handles on the image and drag them to resize the image.

How to resize a background image

I am attempting to put in a background image in a PowerPoint slide. In previous versions of Office, it was easy to do, but in Office 365 this seems to be impossible.

All I want to do is paste the image I have into the upper right corner of the slide and have it appear on each slide. I right click on the slide, chose Format Background, and select Picture or texture fill.

First, it insists that I MUST have a texture. I don't want a texture. I want just plain white as the texture. If I'd wanted a texture, I could have (somehow) selected one, but I cannot get rid of the texture at all.

But Okay, I pick the least offensive texture and select Insert picture from clipboard. It resizes the image to Ginormous and makes it cover the entire slide. I don't want it on the entire slide, I want it in the upper right corner. But there is no longer any way to select and resize the image.

I fiddled with the offset options, but all that does is distort the image.

Is there any way to fix this? How do I select, resize, and place the image appropriately?

If you insert the picture using the format background dialog, it will cover the whole slide. Instead just insert your picture in the Master (View - Master - top thumbnail) using the Insert ribbon, click Picture, select and click Insert. You can place and size it the way you want. Put it in the background if necessary, under the contextual Format tab, order group, click the backward button and choose to background.

Adjust picture brightness or contrast using the Ribbon

To adjust picture brightness or contrast using the Ribbon:

  • Select the picture you want to adjust.
  • Click the Picture Tools Format or Picture Format tab in the Ribbon.
  • In the Adjust group, click Corrections. A drop-down menu appears.
  • Under Brightness/Contrast, hover over the thumbnails to preview the effect and when you find the setting you want, click the thumbnail.
  • Thumbnails on the left show less brightness and thumbnails on the right show more brightness. Thumbnails on the top show less contrast and thumbnails on the bottom show more contrast.

You can use the Format Picture task pane for more control over brightness and contrast settings.

To adjust picture brightness or contrast using the Format Picture task pane:

  • Click More Picture Corrections Options. The Format Picture task pane appears. At the top of the task pane, the Picture icon should be selected.
  • Click the arrow beside Picture Corrections to expand the area (if necessary).
  • Drag the slider beside Brightness and / or Contrast to change the settings. You can also enter a number in the box next to the slider.

From there, you can import the picture which background you want to remove, either by copying and pasting it or uploading it from a folder through Menu , Open , Browse Files – or Ctrl+O as a shortcut.

From the toolbar, select Magic Select , and adjust the area of focus to encompass the area of the image you want to keep.

Press Next , then see if the tool targeted the correct areas of the image. If not, you can use the Add and Remove options to readjust the area by tracing the outline or stroking the brush.

Once you’ve successfully gotten the area right, select Done . Then, you’ll have the cutout on its own, which you can move to the side and delete the rest of the picture from the canvas area by selecting it and pressing Delete .

Go back to the toolbar and toggle on Transparent Canvas from the Canvas section. Lastly, save your final picture through Menu , Save As , Image , or by pressing Ctrl+S .

Paint 3D is a good option for quick and easy background removal, and it also allows you to save the image in multiple formats.

However, it doesn’t always maintain the quality of the picture and may not be the most accurate solution.

Most standard photo editors will have a background removal option, and there are even some online tools dedicated just to that task. But which are the best ones? And how can you use them in the most effective way?

There are a number of reasons why you'd want to generate an invisible background for an image. The most common one is to create a versatile logo . When you design a logo, you want it to look good on every website and over any color print. A transparent background is the best way to achieve that.

Additionally, learning how to make a background transparent can help you edit multiple layers of an image easily and efficiently. You can freely move an object with a see-through background and produce a whole new image that looks just as professional.

By making the background transparent, you can pick the picture's most important object, and place it in different locations, which is great for marketing purposes. Here are the best tools to help you with that.

1. Adobe Photoshop

For most people, GIMP is the best Photoshop equivalent. It offers many of the same editing features. However, since it's an open-source tool, it's completely free to use. You just need to download it and install the app on your computer.

The best way to remove the background is with the Foreground Selection Tool , which is located under Tools > Selection Tools .

  • Draw with the tools around the object you wish to keep. You don't have to be accurate here; a rough sketch will do. Just try to be as close to the object as possible and make sure to close the selection.
  • Press Enter . This will show the background as blue.

If you need a quick fix for a picture and don't want to spend any money at all, LunaPic may be the solution for you. This is a free online editor with all of the basic design features, as well as many effects and filters.

You can upload any picture from your computer, or even straight from a URL. Then, navigate to Edit > Transparent Background , and click on the colors you wish to eliminate.

Microsoft’s Copilot Pro launched last month as a $20 monthly subscription that provides access to AI-powered features inside some Office apps, alongside priority access to the latest OpenAI models and improved image generation.

I’ve been testing Copilot Pro over the past month to see if it’s worth the $20 subscription for my daily needs and just how good or bad the AI image and text generation is across Office apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Some of the Copilot Pro features are a little disappointing right now, whereas others are truly useful improvements that I’m not sure I want to live without.

Let’s dig into everything you get with Copilot Pro right now.

Designer image creation

One of the main draws of subscribing to Copilot Pro is an improved version of Designer, Microsoft’s image creation tool. Designer uses OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 model to generate content, and the paid Copilot Pro version creates widescreen images with far more detail than the free version.

I’ve been using Designer to experiment with images, and I’ve found it particularly impressive when you feed it as much detail as possible. Asking Designer for “an image of a dachshund sitting by a window staring at a slice of bacon” generates some good examples, but you can get Designer to do much more with some additional prompting. Adding in more descriptive language to generate a “hyper-real painting” with “natural lighting, medium shot, and shallow depth of field” will greatly improve image results.

As you can see in the two examples below, Designer gets the natural lighting correct, with some depth of field around the bacon. Unfortunately, there are multiple slices of bacon here instead of just one, and they’re giant pieces of bacon.

Like most things involving AI, the Designer feature isn’t perfect. I generated another separate image of a dog staring at bacon, and a giant piece of bacon was randomly inserted. In fact, I’d say most times only one or two of the four images that are produced are usable. DALL-E 3 still struggles with text, too, particularly if you ask Designer to add labels or signs that have text written on them.

It did a good job of “an illustrated image of a UPS delivery man from 1910. In the style of early Japanese cartoons,” though, adding the UPS logo in — even if it’s a little wonky. Copilot Pro lets you generate 100 images per day, and it does so much faster than the free version.

Copilot in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook

Copilot Pro isn’t all about image generation, though. This subscription unlocks the AI capabilities inside Office apps . Inside Word, you can use Copilot to generate text, which can be helpful for getting an outline of a document started or refining paragraphs.

If you have numerical data, you can also get Copilot to visualize this data as a graph or table, which is particularly useful for making text-heavy documents a little easier to read. If you highlight text, a little Copilot logo appears to nudge you into selecting it to rewrite that text or visualize it. If you select an entire paragraph, Copilot will try to rewrite it with different options you can cycle through and pick.

You can quickly visualize data as a table inside Word documents.

Like the image generation, the paragraph rewriting can be a little hit-and-miss, introducing different meaning to sentences by swapping out words. Overall, I didn’t find that it improved my writing. For someone who doesn’t write regularly, it might be a lot more useful.

Copilot in Outlook has been super useful to me personally. I use it every day to check summaries of emails, which helpfully appear at the top of emails. This might even tempt me to buy Copilot Pro just for this feature because it saves me so much time when I’m planning a project with multiple people.

It’s also really helpful when you have a long-running email thread to just get a quick summary of all the key information. You can also use Copilot in Outlook to generate emails or craft replies. Much like Word, there’s a rewrite tool here that lets you write a draft email that’s then analyzed to produce suggestions for improving the tone or clarity of an email.

Copilot in PowerPoint is equally useful if you’re not used to creating presentations. You can ask it to generate slides in a particular style, and you’ll get an entire deck back within seconds. Designer is part of this feature, so you can dig into each individual slide and modify the images or text.

As someone who hates creating presentations, this is something I will absolutely use in the future. It certainly beats the PowerPoint templates you can find online. I did run into some PowerPoint slide generation issues, though, particularly where Copilot would sit there saying, “Still working on it,” and not finish generating the slides.

Copilot in PowerPoint.

Copilot in Excel seems to be the most limited part of the Copilot Pro experience right now. You need your data neatly arranged in a table. Otherwise, Copilot will want to convert it. Once you have data that works with Copilot, you can create visualizations, use data insights to create pivot tables, or even get formula suggestions. Copilot for Excel is still in preview, so I’d expect we’ll see even more functionality here over time.

The final example of Copilot inside Office apps is OneNote . Much like Word, you can draft notes or plans here and easily rewrite text. Copilot also offers summaries of your notes, which can be particularly amusing if you attempt to summarize shorthand notes or incomplete notes that only make sense to your brain.

Copilot GPTs and the future

Microsoft is also rolling out a number of GPTs for fitness, travel, and cooking. These are essentially individual assistants inside Copilot that can help you find recipes, plan out a vacation itinerary, or create a personalized workout plan. Copilot Pro subscribers will soon be able to build their own custom GPTs around specific topics, too.

Overall, I think Copilot Pro is a good start for Microsoft’s consumer AI efforts, but I’m not sure I’d pay $20 a month just yet. The image generation improvements are solid here and might be worth $20 a month for some.

Email summaries in Outlook tempt me into the subscription, but the text generation features aren’t really all that unique in the Office apps. I feel like you can get just as good results using the free version of Copilot or even ChatGPT, but you’ll have to do the manual (and less expensive) option of copying and pasting the results into a document.

The consumer Copilot Pro isn’t as fully featured as the commercial version just yet, so I’d expect we’ll see a lot of improvements over the coming months. Microsoft is showing no sign of slowing down with its AI efforts, and the company is set to detail more of its AI plans at Build in May .
