Famous for its stunning scenery and welcoming culture, many students turn to Ireland to fulfil their dreams of studying abroad. With historic universities and a world-class education system, it’s easy to see the attraction.

It’s only natural to think that applying for an Irish student visa might seem difficult but don’t worry, we are here to help you make sense of it all.

Which visa is right for you?

Before you begin your application, use our helpful table to check which type of visa is best for you. You do not need a visa to study in Ireland if you are a citizen of an:

  • EU/EEA member state or Switzerland
  • exempt country

This article will show you the process of applying for an Irish long term study visa, commonly known as the ‘student visa’.

What courses can I study?

International students in Ireland can study on any educational course which:

  • is full-time
  • runs for a minimum of 25 weeks a year
  • provides at least 15 hours of daytime study a week; and
  • is listed on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes .

What does an Irish student visa allow?

A student visa will permit you to study and live in Ireland for the duration of your chosen course, up to (maximum of):

  • seven years for a degree programme; or
  • three years for an English language or non-degree programme.

You will need to renew your visa each year for as long as your studies continue.

Most international students in Ireland can work for up to 20 hours a week in term time and 40 hours a week during study breaks.

Other rules

An Irish student visa does not allow you to:

  • receive social welfare (government) payments
  • be self-employed
  • change course during your first year of study
  • change from a degree programme course to an English language or non-degree course (or vice versa)
  • bring your family to Ireland (though there are exceptions, and of course, your family members can still apply to live in Ireland in their own right).

Be aware that every visa is unique. Visas are given on a case-by-case basis. Yours may include other conditions depending on your circumstances.

Before you apply for your Irish student visa, you will need:

  • a current passport, valid for at least 12 months after your anticipated (expected) arrival date; and
  • a Letter of Acceptance from your chosen education provider.

Your Letter of Acceptance

You will need to submit a copy of your Acceptance Letter from your chosen education provider with your application. The letter must:

  • confirm that you have enrolled on your chosen course
  • give details of the course
  • state the total amount of fees payable; and
  • state the amount you have paid so far.

Health Insurance

International students in Ireland must have private medical insurance covering accidents, disease, and hospitalisation for the length of their studies. Some colleges have health plans which automatically cover their students. If this is the case for you, it will be stated in your Letter of Acceptance.

To prove you have satisfactory health insurance when you apply for your student visa, you will need to provide:

  • evidence that you have bought private medical insurance in Ireland
  • evidence that your travel insurance will cover you sufficiently for the length of your stay (first-year students only); or
  • your Letter of Acceptance states that medical insurance has been taken out for you.

You can find more information about the specific requirements of health insurance when studying in Ireland.

When to apply

You can apply for your Irish student visa up to (a maximum of) three months before you plan to travel. The Irish government indicate that you should receive a decision on your visa application within eight weeks.

The costs of an Irish student visa application are:

  • EUR 60 for a single-entry visa
  • EUR 100 for a multi-entry visa.

Some people are exempt from (don’t have to pay) visa fees in Ireland, you can check if the visa fee exemption applies to you.

When you submit your visa application, you also need to include evidence that you have paid course fees of at least EUR 6,000 (or the full amount if the total fee is less). You should supply either:

  • a copy of an Electronic Transfer of Funds to your education provider; or
  • a valid receipt showing fees have been sent to an approved student fees payment service e.g. as offered by Pay to Study .

You will need to show that you have enough money to support yourself during your stay in Ireland. This means you must have documents to prove that you/your sponsor have access to at least:

Find out more about accepted documentation to prove your financial situation . We also have helpful articles available about the cost of living in Ireland and tuition fees .

To do this, you’ll need a certificate of results from an approved English language test obtained in the last two years (Note: in response to COVID-19, this has been temporarily extended to three years) . Explore more about specific language rules .

Knowledge of Irish

If your course is taught in the Irish language, you must provide a written statement from your education provider explaining how they have assessed your ability to speak and write in Irish.

Ireland - Applying for a Student Visa

How do i apply for a student visa.

1. Start your application  HERE

2. Read the instructions carefully as they will differ depending on which country you are applying from. You are required to submit a signed summary of your application form, original passport, passport-sized color photographs, pay the relevant fee and submit all supporting documents.

  • A valid receipt showing that the course fees have been lodged to an approved student fee payment service.

You will find more detailed information on the exact requirements for a student visa on the website of the Department of Justice.

If I don't need an entry visa to enter Ireland, do I need a student visa to study?

No. If you do not need an entry visa to enter Ireland, you do not need a student visa to study in Ireland. However, all non-EEA nationals, including those with visas, must get permission to enter the State by reporting to an Immigration Officer at the port of entry. (The members of the EEA are the 27 countries of the European Union (EU), together with Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein). You must still register at your local immigration office after you arrive. You need to get an Irish Residence Permit (IRP) if you are studying for more than 3 months.

You should have all documentation relating to your studies on your person when coming through immigration. In other words, you should have your letter of offer of a place at the school, or educational institution ready for inspection at immigration. You can read more in our page on permission to land in Ireland .

Permission to stay

Students from a non-EEA country who intend studying in Ireland for a period of more than 3 months must register, after they arrive, with the local immigration officer for the district in which they are living ( Burgh Quay Registration Office if living in Dublin). Their passport will be endorsed with the conditions and period of time for which they have permission to remain.

Students who plan to study for up to 6 months must have access to €700 per month or €4,200 (whichever is the lesser) when they first register. Information on what documentation students require when applying for permission is available on the website of the Department of Justice.

Non-EEA students coming to Ireland for the first time may not get permission to stay in Ireland if they have their children with them or intend their children to join them later on.

You can find out how to register in our page on Registration of non-EEA nationals in Ireland .

Student visa/permission renewals

You can renew your permission with the local immigration officer for the district in which you live. If you live in Dublin, you can renew your student permission online . This means that you do not have to book an appointment to attend the immigration office in person. Your Irish Residence Permit will be sent to you by post.

If your registration is refused and you believe that you have exceptional circumstances, you can apply for an extension of your student permission by post only.

Access to employment while in Ireland on a student visa

If you are attending a course on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP) you will have stamp number 2 endorsed on your passport when you register with your local immigration officer. You will be allowed to take up casual employment of up to 20 hours part-time work per week in term time or up to 40 hours per week during college vacation periods, that is, from June to September inclusive and from 15 December to 15 January. Your entitlement to take up employment ends when your permission to stay expires.

If you are not attending such a course, you will not be entitled to take up part-time work or engage in any business or profession. You will get S tamp 2A on your passport.

You can read information on employment rights of part-time workers in Ireland .

What do I do if I want to leave for a short while?

Cover Letters

Professional advice and tips for students and graduates preparing effective cover letters.

student writing a cover letter in NCI library

Introduction

The purpose of a cover letter is to introduce yourself to the recruiter, sell your interest and motivation in the role and the company and to highlight how you meet their criteria.

We suggest that you always submit a cover letter with your CV . It gives you an opportunity to bring your CV to life and give more of an insight into you as a candidate and what attracts you to this role in this company.

Presentation

  • The cover letter should be no more than one page.
  • It should be addressed to a specific person; where possible do not address your cover letters to “Dear Sir or Madam.” Take the time to get an appropriate contact name and accurate title.
  • Put your customised LinkedIn URL after your signature at the bottom of the cover letter.
  • If sending the cover letter as an email, use the email subject line fully: e.g. Job Application - HR Assistant - 2:1 HR degree finalist with practical HR work experience. If saving it as a word document do not save it as cover letter – once again use the opportunity to grab their attention “Anna Annaville - 2:1 HR finalist – Cover letter for XX company”
  • Pay particular attention to grammar, typing and spelling and ensure your cover letter was checked by someone before you send it employers.
  • Introduce yourself in the first paragraph and explain why you are applying for this job.
  • Do take the time to explain briefly why you are interested in this company and this role specifically. Include information that shows you have done some research and understand what the company does and what the job might involve. This makes it clear that you have not sent out the same cover letter to lots of different employers. It does require some effort- try to say something other than repeating sentences from their website.
  • Using the job description as a guide, tell employers why you are the perfect person for this role.
  • Finish your cover letter positively by reiterating your desire to join the organisation and end on a call to action or ‘look forward to hearing from you’ statement.
  • A cover letter will be far more effective if it is targeted to “match” a specific job specification. Sending the same generic cover letter to lots of companies is not effective.
  • Use the cover letter to highlight how you match the job they have advertised. The emphasis should be on what you can offer rather than placing emphasis on what you are hoping to gain.

The significance can be gauged by the reality that an application for a visa is considered unsatisfactory without an appropriate and convincing cover letter.

However, you needn’t be concerned. If you’re applying for a student visa, you’ll learn more about a cover letter, why it’s necessary, and how to write one in this article.

We’ll also provide you with a sample cover letter that you can use as a template for your own.

When applying for a student visa , having a solid cover letter is quite important, making it one of the most common situations in which one is required to have one.

The purpose of a cover letter is to provide a succinct description of your application and to demonstrate your genuine desire to pursue an academic degree in the country in question.

In addition to this, immigration officials want to see that you have a genuine enthusiasm for the particular program you are applying for, that you are eager to study, and that you have pretty significant roots in your home country, which encourages you to want to return once you are done.

Immigration officials don’t like indications that you plan to visit the country for purposes other than studying and following your program through its conclusion or that you want to continue staying there beyond the expiration date of your visa.

However, following the techniques and guidelines outlined in this post, you won’t have to worry about your student visa application cover letter.

Your visa application will be more likely to be rejected if it does not include a cover letter.

As you don’t meet with the officials face-to-face, the cover letter is an ideal way to address any particular concerns you may have.

When you fill out your application form, the letter serves as an assurance to back up the assertions you made there. A cover letter lends an air of professionalism to your visa application.

When applying for a student visa, you must be thorough in your cover letter. Considering this is a letter of request, it’s important to use techniques to help you get your point through.

So, you’ll need a proper structure and all relevant facts to let your recipient make an accurate judgment on your part. Follow the guidelines below to create an excellent cover letter for your student visa application.

Use the following format in your student visa application:

  • Your Address
  • Name of Authority/Embassy you are applying through
  • Authority/Embassy Address
Subject: APPLICATION FOR A STUDY PERMIT Dear Sir/Madam or To Whom It May Concern, [In this part, you should include a short description of yourself and a few details about your educational background]. [Clearly show why you want to pursue your education at the specific college or university that you will be attending. A few sentences on why you want to attend your program and what you want to achieve as a result] [Next, disclose if you have already paid tuition for the program you have enrolled in. Also, mention how you intend to pay for tuition and living expenses for subsequent semesters. Include any financial aid you’ve received from the school, such as scholarships, grants, or other forms of financial assistance.] [Then, mention the documents that the visa officer should anticipate seeing in your application.] [Next, make it clear that you want to return to your native country after your educational program is complete. Please give your phone number and email address so that authorities may get in touch with you if they have any concerns.] Sincerely, Your full name

This may not make sense right now, but look at the sample below, and you’ll get what I’m talking about. It’s simple, I promise.

A person typing on a laptop computer

As we saw before, the importance of a well-structured, formatted, and brief cover letter cannot be understated. To our relief, this is not a very challenging feat.

Since you already have the appropriate format, all you can do is enter your personal information into the suitable spaces, and you will be good to go.

The following samples will help you better grasp the content of the format above.

I want to study at MIT because I want to further my career as an electronics design engineer and take my designs and developments to the next level, and probably have my own company one day. Since MIT is known as one of the best universities in the USA , I believe a degree from there will truly help me in my future career goals. My goal is to further my education in the United States of America because I consider it to be an excellent learning environment and home to the best educational standards found anywhere on the globe. If I am granted a visa, I will be able to enter the United States on September 1st, giving me plenty of time to settle down before schools begin in October. During my stay, I plan to pay for everything out of my pocket and with the aid of my parents. In the attachments, you’ll discover the bank statements proving my financial self-sufficiency. The following documents are also attached to this cover letter:
