Business writing training courses and workshops, instructor-led programs . delivered onsite, business writing training.

Do you and your team members want to learn tips and tricks to write better?  Business Training Works can help. From better emails to stronger reports, we will give you the tools to make the writing process easier and your final product stronger. For more than two decades, we’ve offered business writing courses and workshops to groups of all kinds. During our time in the classroom, we’ve learned what works and what doesn’t when it comes to designing and delivering an effective writing program.

Our Workshop Facilitators

When working with us, we will partner you with an instructor who has published and understands what it takes to move a document from the beginning of an idea to a polished product.

A Feel for Our Writing Courses

Our business writing courses are hands-on workshops focused on the skills participants need to do their work better. Our approach to writing instruction is down to earth and fun. We don’t dwell on theory. Instead, we focus on exercises, activities, practical guidelines, and tools.

In our years of facilitating these workshops, we are proud to report we have yet to have someone flashback to a hated English class. In fact, people often tell us they finally understand some aspect of writing that, up until that point, had never made sense.

No matter what skill level you have when you begin a course, we guarantee your writing will improve before your program ends.

Workshop Relevancy

Samples:  Our writing workshop participants learn best when they’re working with documents relevant to them and their organization. For that reason, we often request samples before the start of a course. If you cannot provide us with samples, we have a robust library of material from which we can pull.

Assessments: From time to time, our clients request a skills assessment. To accommodate those requests, we can administer a range of assessments either before or after training.

Course Formats

Instructor-Led Online Training Program

Note on Course Length: We offer some of our writing workshops in varying lengths, and often people ask us to explain how a half-day, full-day, and multi-day session differ. The most notable distinction learners will experience is the amount of time allotted to practice concepts.

Our Range of Programs

Our workshops cover an array of subjects: business writing ,  technical writing ,  policy and procedure documentation ,  style-guide usage ,  proofreading , and  editing .

Many of our courses answer general needs and appeal to a wider range of employees. We also offer programs for:

  • government writers ,
  • military writers ,
  • non-native English speakers ,
  • automotive personnel ,
  • web writers , and
  • minute takers .

Course Overviews

This page provides two views of our onsite courses and workshops. The table lists the course subjects followed by available lengths. After the table, you’ll find short descriptions of each program. If you don’t see what you’re looking for or need help navigating, please get in touch . Often we can tailor content or create a customized workshop for both onsite and online delivery.

“Pamela was amazing and extremely personable. She made the groups feel very comfortable during the training.”

“Thank you for yet another great presentation. Myla was wonderful and our team really appreciated the opportunity to work with her.”

“I wasn’t sure what to expect and found it to be awesome. I am in business development and while I consider myself to be somewhat refined/savvy, I walked away with so many things to up my game while with clients and the number one lesson and tie back point is that it is 100% about making the client feel comfortable and special. What we do, how we act, how we present ourselves all feeds into that and our ultimate success as sales professionals.”

“Laurie McIntosh brings her personal experience into the training which was invaluable.”

“It was a pleasure to work with Charlie last week. He was fantastic, and I have received great responses from the participants about the training!”

“Pamela and Business Training Works put together a wonderful training program for ACERTUS. Pamela was able to create a curriculum that completely met our needs on such a short timeline. I am looking forward to working with them again!”

“Pamela is awesome. She has that perfect blend of knowledge, credibility, and personal skills to deliver very effective training across a wide variance of personalities.”

“I wanted to reach out to you regarding Phillip and what wonderful experience it was for our teams to have him as our facilitator for the team building and cross-cultural communication course last Friday. He’s a very talented and engaging trainer, and he was able to get even our toughest employees to participate. Everyone really liked Phillip and enjoyed the course.”

“In each of the sessions that ZMC has hired Business Training Works, I have learned something new — even with the same topic. This is the 10th session we have scheduled, and we always ask for Shawn.”

“Everyone really enjoyed it and came away with tools to help them be a stronger leader! Thank you, Greg!”

“Shawn was an excellent facilitator. After our class he took the time to look over the questions we use during our interview and provided positive feedback. I highly recommend Shawn and this course, ‘How to Interview and Hire Well’.”

“Stefanie is knowledgeable, credible, fun and engaging as a facilitator.”

“Myla was very professional and brought subject matter expertise to the training. My team really respected her and had nothing but positive things to say about her.”

“Thank you again for working with us last week. As always, the team loved the session, and I’ve been hearing great feedback. The change in the leadership team’s behavior, even since just last week, is noticeable. The executive team and I have literally had people coming up to us all week talking about how excited they are for the future, how they believe in where we are headed, and thanking us for what’s being done. As a business leader, this time period is truly a career highlight for me. I can’t thank you enough.”

“I liked that fact that we were kept busy – it never got boring.”

“I heard a lot of positive feedback and several people approached me about your contact info for following up. I know we had a short amount of time for the training but I know I found it valuable and I think the rest of the group did too.”

“Pamela Sumner is professional, warm, and highly educated. Her style translates to small groups as well as large formal settings. She is definitely an asset to BTW.”

“We did enjoy the class and yes, I am excited to work with you to bring in more. Charles is a great teacher, I would like to have him teach them.”

“Greg Jones was a DYNAMITE presenter! He was fun, knowledgeable, and engaging and had our large group of 50+ people laughing and participating right up until the 5:00 PM end time. I am always impressed when a facilitator can keep a group engaged and involved WITHOUT using PPT and Greg did just that with his handouts, flip charting, storytelling and mixing up activities at table groups, teams, and with partners. We would love to have him back!”

“Phillip, you are the best! Loved every minute and the fun interactive aspect of our workshop exceeded my expectation. Looking forward to the LA workshop next month.”

“The workshop was appreciated very much, and you (Stefanie) were indeed a big hit. Thank you for all your support and value you brought this team. I look forward to another opportunity to work with you, you were an absolute delight.”

“The training was amazing! Everyone was enthusiastic and we learned so much. They’re already asking when you’re coming back. You are a true gem!!”

“Pamela did a great job of engaging our participants in the training. They all had very positive feedback about the day and Pamela specifically. She was approachable and easy to relate to and was able to illustrate the points in a way that the team understood.”

“The course was high-quality, first-class, first-rate, superior, fine, excellent and hence forth.  Charles’ way of teaching was pleasant, exceptional, superb, and commendable. My department will speak well about this course for a while. Thank you so much for the quality of training and attention to detail. We are excited to use the tools created by zombies. However, in all seriousness the course was facio delicias and nuntiisque (fun and informative in Latin). I look forward to using your company in the future.”

“The team was quite impressed with your materials and more importantly delivery style. I feel like we all took something positive away from the course which is all I can ever ask for.”

“I just wanted to send out an email to express our appreciation for the service that Greg provided. He was a very motivated and inspirational speaker. We really, and I seriously mean this, enjoyed him. We are going to adapt some of our training procedures to fit his suggestions.”

“As I sit here listening to Laurie, I am thinking that we couldn’t have asked for a better facilitator!!! Wanted to say a quick thank you for your exceptional “customer service” in dealing with us.”

“We cannot thank Stefanie enough for the fabulous presentation she delivered to our reception staff and directors of housing. We had plenty of great feedback from fellow colleagues regarding the presentation, and we’ve already had individuals implementing information they learned from the presentation. We sincerely appreciated all of Stefanie’s hard work delivering a quality presentation to a diverse group of individuals.”

“Thomas Farley’s facilitation of the storytelling module was very engaging and effective. He started the session telling his own story. He asked participants to share their stories, and he respectfully critiqued them using this technique as a teaching tool.”

“Phillip was a great presenter. He kept the class moving forward and kept us all engaged and participating. We all got a lot out of the training and hope to have him back again for follow up.”

“I would like to say that yesterday was simply amazing. Our team is very happy with the training and the content that was presented. Thomas was exactly who we needed to address our etiquette training needs. Our team was receptive and the activities were fun and engaging. I would definitely recommend Thomas to anyone looking to enhance their team with etiquette training.”

“Kate rhymes with great, and that’s what she was.  This was a great class and Kate was the best. We recommend her every time. I took this class years ago with her and she makes the information stick.”

“Thank you Kate, Chris, and Kathy! It was a pleasure working with you, and thank you for providing some valuable insights for our SES!”

“Stefanie was upbeat, engaging, and relatable. She even kept the momentum going through an unexpected room change towards the end of our session. My colleagues cannot stop commenting how amazing the training was, and we are energized to put our new skills to work. Rave reviews all around!”

“Pamela was a gem! We really enjoyed it. The one main piece of feedback I got was they wanted more time.”

“Phillip was engaging and professional. I had many people who were in the session tell me that they enjoyed it.”

“I LOVED Kate. She was an incredible speaker and her ability to educate is a show stopper. Learning about my own communication style was invaluable and I truly believe that I am going to use this information for the rest of my professional career.”

“I have been in several training sessions, and I have to say this has been the best one. We were all engaged in the topics. Regina’s materials were relevant to our jobs. She started on time, and the time flew by.”

“Board presentation went well. ”Excellent” according to our chairman. Thanks for your training.”

“Great performance by Shawn! Shawn Doyle is a great presenter, and teaches you just by presenting himself.”

“Pamela was very engaging. The training was well presented and held the group’s attention. The feedback I got from my staff was that it was useful not only in work but in their personal lives as well.”

“A pleasure doing business with Business Training Works on our seminar.”

“Kate was a refreshing start to 2020! Very energetic and captivating the entire session. Moments of reflection, laughter, and engagement made this a great FLAG kickoff to the year!”

“Both sessions went great. They were informative and very interactive and Myla was able to engage the participants throughout the entire presentation. She is a wonderful instructor!”

“Greg was awesome! Very informative and interactive. He got rave reviews from the participants.”

“Our customer service manager of 21 years stated that this training was the best and the most relevant class she attended in her career.”

“I’m usually quiet in group discussions, but I enjoyed this course so much, I participated quite a bit.”

“Yesterday’s workshop was both thoroughly enjoyable and tremendously beneficial. From all accounts, it was a productive, engaging, and substantive experience from which participants were able to glean significant professional insights and lessons for best practices in their field.”

“Laurie, as always, was AMAZING!”

“It was a positive experience to have this training, very useful to understanding myself as a provider and patients. Laurie was engaging as a speaker. I learned to approach patient care differently seeing patients as different and not “difficult.” I took away key points and different strategies to use in my interactions with patients, just a matter of finding the time to make adjustments and implement these changes.”

“Eduardo was an excellent facilitator. I took so much with me to apply to my job responsibilities that will enhance my thinking as I resolve difficult callers and issues. Eduardo was very interactive with the group and had excellent ideas to promote thinking and participation. He is the greatest facilitator I have ever worked with!”

“Business Training Works made this project extremely easy for me. Not only did they customize content for us, but they delivered it well and provided a great train-the-trainer session. It was truly an effortless experience for us!”

“The course has been tremendously helpful to my staff, and I am very grateful for Regina’s knowledge and generosity. She really shared her talents and experience freely, and provided what was needed to reset our team dynamics.”

“We also appreciate how well prepared you (Phillip) are, and that the subject matter is addressed in substantive way that has real impact. Your style has that special something that really engages people.”

“We had an amazing day today! Everyone I spoke to during the day today said they were really enjoying the session (as did I). Charlie did a fantastic job. Thank you both for a great experience!”

“WOW – where do I begin!? Working with you both has been an outstanding experience throughout the entire process. Your flexibility from first contact was very valuable – we appreciate your willingness to participate in multiple teleconferences to align with KMG.

Your ability to link KMG’s message and philosophies to the lessons is what set you apart from your competitors.

Kate’s energy and willingness to meet as many of the attendees as possible and her ability to quickly build a rapport with folks established credibility and a safe environment. Everyone valued the ‘informalness’ of the key note.

The Tuesday workshop was phenomenal! I saw people taking notes that I never would have imagined would be engaged.

Fantastic result overall – thank you so very much!”

I want to thank you for working with me. Both our senior editor and my supervisor have commented that my writing has improved.

Thank you very much for your patience and instruction.

I appreciate all of your help, and have learned a lot from your course. I feel more confident in my writing and I attribute that to your patience and the way the class is designed. Thanks for all of your help and encouragement.

WONDERFUL! I have really learned a lot taking the course. It was a real challenge for me because I do this same thing all day at work and it’s hard to make yourself do it when you come home.

Compare the Best Online Business Writing Classes

Are online writing courses worth it.

Emails, articles, and sales pages are among the most useful business writing content due to their potential to persuade a reader to make a decision that will benefit your business.

Learning how to identify your audience is one of the most valuable skills a good business writing class can teach you. Knowing exactly what your readers care about lets you write directly to them and build trust and valuable relationships that can ultimately prove to be profitable.

What are the four types of business writing?

The four types of business writing are instructional, informational, persuasive, and transactional. Learning how to identify your audience and which style of writing to utilize are some of the most valuable skills a good business writing class can teach you. Knowing exactly what your readers care about lets you write directly to them and build trust and valuable relationships that can ultimately prove to be profitable.

Can I make a living with content writing?

Yes, there are many ways to make a living as a content writer. Business writing classes can help you become a better marketer by identifying the various needs of your audience and tailoring your writing to meet those needs. If you’re a freelancer, for instance, knowing how to write a persuasive email can help you land more clients and professionally resolve conflicts or difficulties.

How much do online business writing classes cost?

In our research, we found that most good online business writing classes cost between $50 to $100+. By comparison, an accredited college course in business writing can be $600 or more.

Many online learning platforms use subscription-based pricing that gives students access to their full catalog of courses as long as they maintain their subscription. This can be a great way to piece together a curriculum of learning and study for a reasonable price.

We looked at over a dozen online business writing courses for this review. At the top of our list were offerings that had high ratings and student enrollment, as those factors are often an indicator of quality.

We also delved into the experience of the instructors. Since being an expert doesn’t automatically mean you can teach what you know, we looked for professionals with extensive experience distilling their knowledge through consulting, writing, presenting, or teaching.

We chose courses that were self-paced and easy to use with little to no technical skills. Flexible learning options allow both busy professionals and students to learn on their own schedules, making them more likely to enroll in and complete a course.

Finally, we considered pricing in our review. With so many good courses available for a reasonable monthly subscription or a one-time payment under $100, we left out some higher-priced courses that didn’t seem to offer more than their more affordable alternatives.

Questions You Should Ask

The Fundamentals of Choosing a Course

Choosing an online business writing course is not only a financial investment but an investment in your professional future. For this reason, we encourage you to scrutinize and vet each option. It’s critical to your success that you make the right choice.

Why are goals important?

The first step in choosing a course is to define your goals. It will be difficult to choose the best class if you do not identify the outcomes you want to achieve. Here are a few goals we often see for both individuals and businesses.

Determine your starting point

Choosing and evaluating courses.

You will quickly learn that there are many options and configurations of business writing courses. This chapter will review what to look for when evaluating your options.

Important:  The next two sections are dependent on if you are a company looking to provide a course to a group of employees or an individual looking to take an online class.

Want to learn more about how to create a custom corporate program?

Are you an individual looking to choose an individual course, chapter 2.1, 6 steps to create a custom corporate program, create project brief.

The first step is to outline what your objectives are for the program. The section above outlines how to identify your project goals, team’s weaknesses, and strengths. Expand on this to create your project brief. This brief should detail the requirements for your organization.

A project brief will not only help you clarify what you are looking for but will also help companies bidding understand what you are looking for.

Outline “unique requirements”

We find each custom program has what we call “unique requirements.” These are elements that are distinct to your project. Make sure to identify these beforehand and ensure the course is built to support these.

Here are a few examples of unique course requirements we have helped design:

Industry-specific elements

Company writing models

Scalability of the course to multiple geographic areas

Integration with internal training programs

Specific reporting, tracking, and registration

Document compliance for regulatory board review

Coaching for major documents

Individual coaching and mentoring

Ongoing educational program

Create evaluation criteria

The next step is to decide what criteria you will use to evaluate your training options. We have created a helpful rubric to aid in structuring your decision-making process. Notice we have highlighted value instead of price. The lowest cost option does not always offer the best value.

Choosing a Business Writing Course Rubric

Download a printable PDF version of this rubric.

Interview, evaluate, and select

During the next stage, you want to use your unique evaluation criteria to   review the course   options. This is a time to talk with the provider and iron out details. Make sure to discuss outcomes, timeline, and budget. Once you have selected the training provider, they can start designing your custom program.

Design course

The fifth step is for the company to create the program. They should work with you to ensure all project criteria are met. This phase should be collaborative between both parties.

Kickoff and execution

Once the course development is complete, it is time to launch the program. You can start enrolling students and tracking results. Periodically it is important to evaluate the program and make updates where necessary.

Single enrollment vs. ongoing

Depending on your business, you may need just one enrollment period or an ongoing, staggered registration. This decision will be dependent on your size, timeline, hiring process, and budget.

Make sure to discuss what option is best for your business. Feel free to   contact us   to help design your custom program.

Live, in-person workshops and classes

We offer instructor-led in-person and live virtual workshops. These are highly interactive and focus on sample documents and exercises. Training can be one day or multiple sessions and can include instructor feedback for each individual.

Chapter 2.2

If you’d like us to recommend the right course for you, please reach out and tell us your writing requirements, challenges, and goals. We’ll send a course recommendation.

Ask for the outline

When looking at courses it's important to review the course outline. Make sure that it addresses all the weaknesses you have written down on your list. Look for a comprehensive course that uses multiple methods for teaching the content.

Review instructor interaction

Look for courses that allow individual interaction with an instructor. This will allow you to ask questions and gain more actionable feedback. The instructor should not only provide feedback on your writing but also on your skills as a writer.

Students often rate their one-on-one interactions with their instructor as one of the most valuable parts of our web-based courses.

Course structure & quality

You won’t be able to view the course in its entirety before buying, but there are a few ways to evaluate the structure and quality. Chapter Four details how to   review the structure of a course .

For quality, try to dig deeper than the course outline. Ask if you can watch a sample lesson, demo, or view a video that highlights parts of the course.

Review testimonials & evaluations

Review testimonials from the course. Look for individuals that hold similar learning goals as you. If they publish course reviews, read through both the best and worst scoring reviews.

As an alternative, you will often find companies release results from their post-course evaluations. These evaluations may be more valuable as reviews are often given by individuals that had a very good or very poor experience.

Have a conversation

Scheduling a discussion can help answer any remaining questions. See if they have a phone number you can call or a link to schedule a call if you still need additional info. Make sure to create a list of questions before the call.

Choose a course

Make sure to review multiple courses to ensure you are choosing the right one. Providers often have multiple courses that address different learning objectives. In the next chapter, we review our business writing courses and detail the differences between each offering.

All of our courses are fully customizable and available for groups or individuals.

While our courses have a similar structure, the content varies greatly based on the objectives of each course. From practicum courses in proposal and report writing to our best-selling business writing techniques course, we have a variety of courses available to match your specific goals.

Why is pedagogy important?

Pedagogy   is the theory and practice of how to best teach. This is important because it dictates how your online course is structured.

You want to ensure courses are developed by experts in both the content and adult learning theories. As an adult, you learn differently than a child. Our courses are based on   Robert Gagne’s   theory of adult education. Our courses are designed for high-performance individuals in professional industries.

Below are the essential elements to look for in the structure of a course.

Onsite-Best-Business-Writing-Course-Classroom

Instructor feedback is the most valuable part of an online course. It ensures that you get personalized feedback and support that will change the way you write at work. Make sure to carefully review the level of engagement that you will receive throughout your course.

Don’t assume all courses come with instructor feedback. Many courses do not offer detailed feedback.

Don’t accept merely submitting a document you’ve written at work for instructor feedback. That feedback will be language editing only. You want feedback that is more holistic, which addresses your ability to assess your audience, plan a document, present relevant content, organize it well, sequence it appropriately, extract what is truly important, and assess the words you use and the way you use them. You want more than mere editing.

Much better is receiving feedback on your writing based on a scenario. This will allow your instructor to assess your planning, organization, sequencing, and the words you choose and how you use them. From this feedback, you discover common pitfalls, your writing strengths, and learn the overall craft of writing.

DEMAND A FULL, HOLISTIC REVIEW OF YOUR WRITING, NOT A MERE EDIT OF COMMON GRAMMAR MISTAKES.

Instructors should also use this time to expand the lessons and include supplemental resources based on your writing.

Ideally, you are also receiving full support for the duration of your course.

Most importantly you want to look for a course that offers feedback to your goals and you as a writer. Verify that the course asks you to submit your course goals. To become an advanced business writer, you need feedback on your skills as a writer that is specific to your needs. Specific goals allow your instructor to provide feedback that will immediately improve your actual writing at work and help you consistently apply effective business writing strategies.

Individual feedback is one of the most important ways to hone your business writing skills, so make sure it’s meaningful.

Varied methods of instruction

Video examples, written text.

Written text is used throughout the courses to teach major writing concepts.

Model writing

Mock writing allows you to apply new concepts in an optimal situation. This is an excellent way to practice new concepts and achieve effective writing.

Case studies

Scenario-based exercises.

These exercises focus on learning by doing. These exercises are practical and focus on solving real-world problems. You apply a proven business writing process and business writing essentials you learn during the course.

Visual infographics

Document models.

Annotated examples of typical documents such as business proposals and business reports can be used to illustrate challenges and improvements.

Presentations

Current research, annotated documents.

It is important to ask the class size of the course you are taking. All our online courses are individually paced and instructed. This allows you to progress at your preferred pace and interact as needed with your instructor.

In addition to learning materials, some courses offer example materials to help you after the course. We call these job aids or resource documents. They are quick reference guides that you can print out and keep at your desk. They ensure you are reminded of key concepts taught during the course. Each of our courses comes with multiple job aids.

Can I see what your instructor feedback looks like?

You want to look for individual feedback that goes beyond proofreading your documents. Look for feedback that focuses on improving the writer, not just their writing.

Can I call you with a question?

Not every company offers full support for their courses.

The first lesson starts off with a discussion about the purpose of marketing and the goals of writing, and then talks about the unique roles, responsibilities, and challenges of business and marketing writing. You'll learn exactly what business and marketing writers do as you begin exploring this exciting field.

Before you can write or recognize successful copy, you'll need to understand your corporate identity: who the company is and what the company offers. In this lesson, you'll delve into all the aspects of corporate image that writers and marketing professionals need to ponder before producing effective projects.

Now that you understand image, what can you do with it? In this lesson, you'll analyze business and marketing goals—and the needs of your audience—to figure out the appropriate writing style for any project.

It's a creative field, but certain projects require certain conventions. In this lesson, you'll see how a particular medium or project type can guide your writing style and approach, helping you save time and stay on target.

This lesson will gather up the information you explored in the previous four lessons and put it all together. It will illustrate how to apply everything you've learned so far as you develop an original writing project from start to finish.

Do you need to write in complete sentences? What is a complete sentence, anyway? This lesson will give you a brief refresher on sentence construction and then go over some guidelines for using fragments in business writing. You'll also learn to recognize and fix one of the most common errors in modern writing: the comma splice.

You can't write without words! In this lesson, you'll learn to make accurate word choices. The lesson will discuss the level of vocabulary appropriate for business writing and show you how to choose words that reinforce a project's theme. It'll also clarify some tricky word pairs and discuss word-choice problems whose usage can undermine the professionalism of your writing.

In this lesson, you'll take a critical look at the inside of a company. First, you'll see how to develop "marketing" projects for audiences within a company. Then you'll explore the roles of the various specialists who contribute to a single marketing piece—bosses, clients, editors, junior writers, artists, and designers. That means responding to prompts, writing essays, and critically reviewing your work to better understand how you can improve.

Effective writing is clear and accurate and provides enough context to engage readers and help them understand the message you are trying to deliver. For example, journalists provide context by focusing on the “who, what, when, where, and why” of a situation.

There are many different types of writing including, but not limited to: persuasive writing, creative writing, poetry, script writing, journalism, nonfiction, academic writing, speech writing, and song writing.

Learners develop writing skills at their own pace. Developing mastery takes practice and time.

Sometimes grammatical rules are not universally applicable, which can make them difficult to remember. Everyone has different learning styles and speeds. Memorization can help, but practice is key.

There are online courses that can help you learn how to organize your ideas and develop your voice for a business setting. You can practice writing effective emails, reports, and presentations.

Aspiring creative writers can develop their skills by taking classes that not only teach them about the essential elements of storytelling, but also give them opportunities to practice writing and critiquing both their own work and the work of other writers.

Are there Prerequisites to Learning Business Writing?

Technically, there aren’t many prerequisites required for learning business writing . In fact, most beginner-level courses accept anyone who applies. That said, it’s a good idea to have a strong working knowledge of several capabilities to reduce your confusion. So please make sure that you understand the following skill sets before applying for any business writing course:

  • Strong Grammar Skills: Business writers must understand grammar rules , proper spelling, and other important technical writing skills. These form the backbone of your writing experience and, without them, you’ll struggle to produce effective documents while learning business writing.
  • Above-Average Writing Knowledge: As a business writer, you must understand basic writing concepts , like crafting coherent sentences and paragraphs. You must also know how to capture the reader’s imagination and provide great details with a clear style.
  • Revision and Editing Abilities: Do you know how to quickly proofread your documents to catch obvious spelling and grammar mistakes? If not, you should learn these skills before taking a business writing class. Inability to self-edit causes sloppy and unprofessional documents.
  • Industry Information: Business writing skills may vary depending on your chosen market. For example, legal companies need very different documents than healthcare facilities. As a result, you may need industry-specific knowledge before practicing business writing.

How to do a MoSCoW Analysis and prioritise requirements effectively in a complex environment?

As a Business Analyst, the question of how to prioritise requirements may seem like an easy question to answer but it can also be wrought with a variety of complications and interesting complexities. Once you have overcome these potential complexities which can come with requirements prioritisation, the most relevant Business Analysis technique to apply is what is known as the MoSCoW Analysis.

This blog article will cover both how to apply the MoSCoW Analysis for requirements prioritisation as well as the considerations and complexities for a Business Analyst to understand about their environment before attempting to prioritise requirements.

So let’s start by talking about some of these complexities that can face a Business Analyst when it comes to requirements prioritisation.

#1: Different perspectives on what is important

#2: Lack of leadership

This factor walks hand in hand with the previous factor (and is most likely the cause of it!) where people have different perspectives on what takes priority. A lack of leadership in the project or initiative team causes confusion around what is important and this is when people will end up providing their own perspective around priorities rather than following business priorities or guidelines. This causes problems in various ways and can put the Business Analyst in a very awkward position. Sometimes this lack of leadership can mean that a stronger or more senior stakeholder might get the requirements prioritised according to his/her team’s preferences due to his/her position and level of influence in the organisation rather than it being the true priorities for the good of the organisation. This leads to requirement priorities which is not necessarily being implemented in the most valuable or efficient manner and consequently reflects badly on the project as a whole.

It is imperative for a Business Analyst to receive clear direction from their project manager or project steering committee about what are the clear business objectives (with their relative priorities outlined) that requirements must deliver against so that the Business Analyst can use these business objective priorities to guide the conversations when requirement prioritisation activities take place.

#3: Not prioritising requirements

In some organisations or projects there is simply no formal and explicit effort undertaken to prioritise requirements at all. This doesn’t mean requirements are not in some sort of priority, it simply means that the requirements are not prioritised in a structured and collaborative way. This type of approach can cause problems when expectations are not managed about what will be delivered by when but it can also be that prioritising the requirements are very clear cut in a particular type of project and hence this informal way works in those circumstances. So although the Business Analyst must be very careful when choosing to not formally go through a requirements prioritisation activity, it can be the most logical and suitable approach for certain types of projects.

#4: Priority levels are not well defined

The last complexity or consideration for the Business Analyst to pay careful attention to before embarking on requirements prioritisation activities are simply the definition of the priority levels and what each priority means. Many organisations have adopted a method or set of priority levels which they are used to using without it necessarily being the most effective way to prioritise.

So now that we have discussed some of the common complexities in projects and organisations that make requirements prioritisation somewhat tricky for the Business Analyst lets now look at the MoSCoW Analysis technique and how best it can be applied.

The MoSCoW Analysis Technique

The MoSCoW Analysis is a very common and effective requirements prioritisation technique because it allows not only for three clear priority levels but also covers the requirements that will end up not being included in the currently delivery or project at all. This works very well because it allows people to explicitly agree the different priorities including the requirements, which will be excluded or referred to a future release.

Let’s have a look at how this prioritization technique works:

MoSCoW is an acronym.

M = Must ‘Must’ level requirements are those requirements which will definitely be included to be delivered. There is no negotiation around whether they will be delivered and are considered mandatory requirements.

S = Should ‘Should’ level requirements are those requirements which should be included if at all possible. If the project have capacity and time and it will not jeopardise any of the “Must” requirements, then these requirements should be delivered or included in whatever the prioritisation is done for.

C = Could The ‘Could’ level requirements are the requirements which could be included if it doesn’t have any impact on any of the ‘Should’ or ‘Must’ requirements.

W = Won’t The ‘Won’t’ level requirements tend to be the requirements which will not be included to be delivered or implemented this time but are requirements that would be favoured for a future delivery or implementation.

In Conclusion

As a final point to make, it is important that although the Business Analyst uses a best practice requirements technique , the outlined complexities listed here should be addressed as much as possible prior to embarking on a requirements prioritization activity to ensure a successful and accurate outcome.
