Smile follows the point of view of 11-year-old Raina Telgemeier, a sixth-grade student at Aptos Middle School (for this guide, “Raina” refers to the book’s protagonist , and “Telgemeier” refers to the author). Raina’s mother takes her to Dr. Dragoni’s orthodontist office, where Raina learns that she will need braces to correct an overbite. That night, Raina trips and falls face first while chasing her friends, breaking her two upper front teeth. Her mother takes her to Dr. Golden for emergency surgery to insert one tooth back into her mouth and pull down the other from her gums.

Raina finds the situation funny at first but becomes frustrated with strict recovery guidelines, invasive questions, and throwaway platitudes. When she returns to Dr. Golden, she learns that her front teeth are now lodged too far above the others. Fixing them requires a root canal, painful top-row braces to pull the front teeth down, and nighttime headgear that makes her feel like a nerd.

Raina’s mother consoles her by buying her videogames and allowing her to get ear piercings on her 12th birthday. Meanwhile, a sub-conflict emerges as Raina’s friends pressure her about her appearance. Two of them, Karin and Nicole, make mean jokes at her expense. When Raina enters seventh grade, she develops a crush on Sammy, a sixth grader in her band class who also wears braces. Soon after, a major earthquake hits San Francisco, but Raina’s family only suffers temporary power loss. She figures out that Sammy has feelings for her as well but then develops an obsessive crush on Sean, a basketball player.

The braces fail to pull the teeth down, so Dr. Dragoni decides to remove them entirely and install full braces to push the remaining teeth together. Raina is terrified, but she gets to wear a retainer with plastic teeth in between procedures that make her feel normal. She lands in a dilemma when Sammy asks her to the Valentine’s Day dance with the intent to confess his love to her. Feeling sick to her stomach, Raina leaves the dance without entering and breaks Sammy’s heart the next school day.

Raina’s new braces are even more painful than before, and she must go for re-tightening every few weeks. In addition, she suffers a traumatic experience when she faints after a botched gum cleaning. Her friends, believing she is too uptight, intensify their teasing and stage a prank on her 13th birthday, giving her a tacky makeover under the pretense of wooing Sean. As they enter eighth grade, the girls enter puberty and start hanging out with boys. While Raina appreciates the opening up of her friend group, she remains fixated on Sean as the perfect guy whom she cannot get because of her appearance.

After graduation, Raina plans to start fresh in high school, but she ends up in the same group and struggles in class. Worse, she now must wear a rubber band between her braces to correct a crossbite. At the book’s climax, Karin mocks her breath after her extensive dental supplies fall out of her backpack. As Raina storms away, Karin and Nicole pull down her skirt in the middle of the courtyard. Tearful and humiliated, Raina stands up to them as well as to other friends who condone their actions.

Raina gains newfound confidence after leaving her group and soon meets Theresa, who treats her with respect and introduces her to others who encourage her artistic abilities. Her mind is off her teeth, but her old fears return after Dr. Dragoni removes the braces to reveal a row of discolored, misshapen teeth. Her friends’ reassurance melts away her worries, and Dr. Golden later applies more bonding to improve their appearance. She realizes that focusing on her passions matters more for her self-esteem than her outward appearance. Raina paints the banner for the school’s Sophomore Hop, dances without a care at the event, and gives a beaming smile in a group photo.

Educational Value

Readers get a glimpse of life in the late '80s and early '90s through historical details like no cell phones, old-fashioned video games, and the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake in San Francisco. There's also considerable detail about orthodontia, which many teens and pre-teens will relate to.

Positive Messages

For the most part, Raina's struggles are ordinary teenage concerns: Will the boy she likes ever like her back? Is she cool enough? It's this ordinariness and the realistic depiction of how Raina overcomes her difficulties that make this graphic novel stand out. Most notably, Raina figures out that she doesn't need to put up with friends who don't like her for who she is, and she finds strength in following her own interests.

Positive Role Models

Raina is a likable girl with supportive and understanding parents. Though she makes some missteps, such as standing up a boy at a dance, it's her process of correcting those missteps that makes this such a relatable and true-to-life story. Readers will be encouraged and comforted by the path Raina takes to finding new friends that support her.

Violence & Scariness

Although Smile is not a violent story, there are moments of teeth-related gore that might gross out some readers, especially when Raina falls and loses her front teeth and leaves a pool of blood on the asphalt.

Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Violence & Scariness in your kid's entertainment guide.

Products & Purchases

Some pop culture icons are included, such as Ariel from The Little Mermaid and Bart Simpson , but they serve more as historical details that place the story in the late '80s/early '90s than attempts to push merchandise. Some products mentioned: Nintendo, Hi-C, Walgreen's, Noxema, Cover Girl, and a few other cosmetic brands.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that the autobiographical graphic novel Smile follows author Raina Telgemeier through her real-life experiences of having her teeth knocked out and the years of orthodontic work that follow during her early teen years. Because the story is true (although the names of the characters have been changed), not all of Raina's dilemmas are solved in the neatly wrapped-up way of most middle-grade novels, which may be disappointing to some readers. Although the cartoony drawings may indicate a light, fun story -- and there are certainly elements of that -- Smile is also a meaningful story of a teen's journey to self-acceptance.

Fun read, but full of insecurity, bad friends, peer pressure that only improve on the last couple pages

Good, but just a little off, what's the story.

Like many 12-year-olds, Raina is apprehensive about getting braces. But when she trips and knocks out her two front teeth, the fate of her teeth becomes even more traumatic. For the next four years, we follow Raina through many trips to the orthodontist, mouth surgeries, and a variety of dental contraptions. Meanwhile, Raina starts middle school, gets a crush on a boy who barely notices her, experiences the Loma Prieta Earthquake in San Francisco, and deals with friends who are not always supportive and are sometimes downright mean. As Raina's teeth go through extensive changes, Raina learns to stand up for herself and discovers that following her own interests, especially art, will lead to healthy friendships with people who like her for who she is.

Is It Any Good?

Telgemeier's simple, clean drawings in a soft color palette are easily accessible even to readers new to graphic novels, and there is also a rich, complex story to delve into. Raina's experiences with her teeth as she goes through middle and high school serve as an excellent metaphor for her life: Her teeth will never be perfect, but with a little work, they get a lot better. In SMILE, through incidents both meaningful and trivial that span the course of several years, we watch author and illustrator Raina Telgemeier grow up. Readers will enjoy figuring out that The Little Mermaid influenced Raina's future as a cartoonist, and they may relate to how Raina can always find comfort in the art room at school. But one of Smile's most outstanding qualities is its spot-on depiction of the subtle way middle school girls can undermine one another and how Raina eventually figures out when friends make her feel more bad than good, she shouldn't accept it.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about how Raina's experiences with her teeth make her feel like a misfit. Have you ever gone through something that made you feel like you couldn't relate to your friends?

How does this graphic novel compare with others you've read? Do you react to it differently knowing that the story is from the author's real life?

Lots of friends tease each other playfully, but sometimes they can go too far, as Raina's friends did. What's off-limits for teasing among you and your friends?

Get happy: New TED Book on the mystery and magic of smiling

How can something as simple as a smile be so deceptively complex? That’s the mystery and magic explored in Smile: The Astonishing Powers of a Simple Act , a new TED Book by Ron Gutman about the sensation and science of the smile. From the broad beaming grin of a toddler to the oily smirk of a used car salesman, smiles convey an enormous range and depth of emotions. Grins also have radically varied meanings in different cultures, as the author learned during his many worldwide trips to explore the complicated but ubiquitous act of smiling.  We recently spoke with Gutman about his book.

Why is smiling so important?

Smiling is central to what makes us human.  We’re the only species that smiles, and we do it from birth.  It has an immense impact on how we feel, because smiling triggers our biological pleasure receptors. It also positively impacts how others see and perceive us, and can be a powerful way to improve social situations. Best of all, smiling is important because it’s natural, always available, and easy.

How long have people been researching the act of smiling?

In the book I mention a French neurologist Guillaume Duchenne , whose research in the mid 1800’s was focused on the different types of facial expressions, including smiles. Duchenne created an extensive catalogue of smiles and other facial expressions, but found one in an entirely different class from all the others. He called it the “genuine” smile—the smile that arrives spontaneously and reflects pure delight.  Duchenne also inspired Charles Darwin to conduct research into smiling . Darwin detailed the early smiling behavior of his own children and wrote the facial feedback response theory, which noted that facial expression intensified emotion, and the suppression of facial expression lessened emotional response.

You’ve traveled the world quite a bit talking about this. Have  you discovered cultural differences in relation to smiling?

When you are in a new place, where you don’t speak the language and don’t have a knowledge of the cultures and customs, you’re left with what’s universal and what transcends the things that make us different. Smiling is one of those great unifiers. Still, it’s still subject to regional norms.  Different cultures are more or less accepting of smiles in different situations.  For example, in the United States, smiling at strangers is commonplace.  In some other countries, however, smiling at a stranger might arouse suspicion.  But, generally, we’re all likely to smile for the same reasons: we’re happy.

Does a smile have to be real to be effective? The nervous counterfeit smile of Miss America, for instance, seems to go a long way.

Smiles are highly effective in activating the reward mechanisms of our brains, so even forced smiles, the so-called “social” smile, can be effective at communicating. But they don’t offer the truly great effects that genuine smiles.  The full spectrum of the benefits of smiling are found in real, genuine, big smiles.  These are the ones that make us feel great inside, and make others around us smile. They make us look not just friendly in the eyes of others, but also competent.  As studies examining the health and well-being benefits of smiles show, the real benefits are reserved for real smiles.

Can someone smile too much? I’m thinking of the creepy smirk of a used-car salesman.

There’s no such a thing as too much genuine smiling.  The beautiful thing about smiles is that we are hardwired to detect smiles that are genuine and smiles that aren’t.  We know that we can trust genuine smiles, but we don’t have the same feelings about fake smiles. There’s a bunch of research that I’m mentioning in the book that shows how we detect the authenticity of  smiles, and they’re mostly based on mimicking the smiler to experience the same feelings and emotions she/he does. So smile much, smile often, and smile genuinely.

Smile: The Astonishing Powers of a Simple Act is part of the  TED Books series, which is available for the Kindle and Nook as well as on Apple’s iBookstore .

Thomas’s eyes twinkled, reflecting the radiant orange sky as a warm, captivating smile spread across his face. It was an open invitation to a world of warmth, charm, and unspoken promises that made Annabelle’s heart flutter.

In response, Annabelle’s lips curled into a breathtakingly exquisite smile that was a testament to her burgeoning love for him.

The intensity of her smile heightened as she brushed her hand against his, her cheeks flushing a deeper shade of red. But then, Thomas’ grin morphed into an unsettling, insincere smile, hinting at a concealed secret.

Horror Novel

In the flickering candlelight of the haunted mansion, Emma and the ghastly figure engaged in a spine-chilling exchange of smiles.

In response, the spectral figure flashed a sinister, chilling smile, casting an eerie glow that seemed to consume the dwindling candlelight.

Is the Horror Film 'Smile' Based on a Book? Details About the Chilling Flick

Katherine Stinson - Author

Sep. 26 2022, Published 10:24 p.m. ET

September is nearing its end, and you know what that means — spooky season is truly upon us. Start off the best time of the year right by catching the new Paramount Pictures horror flick Smile on Sept. 30th, 2022.

However, before you do, let's learn a bit more about Smile . Is it based on a book?

The trailer makes it quite clear that the film will completely change a viewer's outlook on smiling. Who thought of such a creepy story idea? Here's what we know.

Poor Dr. Rose has her work cut out for her in 'Smile'.'

'Smile' is based on the short film, 'Laura Hasn't Slept.'

Why make a feature film based on someone else's book when you can just use your own plot idea from a short film you also directed?

That's exactly what writer/director Parker Finn did with Smile . The feature film is based off of Parker's 2020 short film Laura Hasn't Slept .

Here's the synopsis for Laura Hasn't Slep t, per the film's IMDb page: "Desperate to rid herself of a recurring nightmare, a young woman seeks the help of her therapist."

The short film is 11 minutes long. So, can you stream it anywhere? It isn't available to watch on YouTube after all.

Unfortunately, Laura Hasn't Slept isn't available on any streaming platform. However, what we do know is that the short film was honored with a special jury recognition award at South By Southwest 2020, according to Parker's Instagram page.

The synopsis for Smile isn't exactly the same as Laura Hasn't Slept , but it's very similar: "After a bizarre, traumatic event involving a patient, a psychiatrist begins to experience terrifying occurrences that only she can see."

According to the synopsis, the psychiatrist becomes "increasingly convinced that she's being pursued by a malevolent supernatural force."

The original working title for Smile was Something's Wrong With Rose . However, we think the title Smile really gets the point across better!

Wait, was that a star from 'The Boys' in the 'Smile' trailer?

Sosie Bacon plays the haunted psychiatrist in question (and yes, she is in fact, the daughter of Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick ).

Before taking on her first role as leading lady in a feature film, Sosie portrayed Clay Jensen's ex-girlfriend on 13 Reasons Why . The actress also won rave reviews for her performance in the television series Mare of Easttown.

Jessie T. Usher also appears in the Smile trailer. According to the film's IMDb page, Jessie plays a character named Trevor. Fans of The Boys will definitely recognize Jessie as the supe A-Train from the Prime Video series. Kal Penn also stars in Smile as the character Dr. Morgan Desai. The question is, will all of their characters make it to the end of the film?

We'll just have to find out when Smile premieres in theaters on Sept. 30, 2022! Happy haunting everyone!

Smile: A Graphic Novel

  • 4.7 • 3.6K Ratings

Publisher Description

Raina Telgemeier's #1 New York Times bestselling, Eisner Award-winning graphic memoir based on her childhood!Raina just wants to be a normal sixth grader. But one night after Girl Scouts she trips and falls, severely injuring her two front teeth. What follows is a long and frustrating journey with on-again, off-again braces, surgery, embarrassing headgear, and even a retainer with fake teeth attached. And on top of all that, there's still more to deal with: a major earthquake, boy confusion, and friends who turn out to be not so friendly.

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY DEC 7, 2009

A charming addition to the body of young adult literature that focuses on the trials and tribulations of the slightly nerdy girl. Telgemeier's autobiographical tale follows her from sixth grade, when her two front teeth are knocked out during a fluke accident, through high school, when, her teeth repaired, she bids good-bye to her childhood dentist. Like heroines stretching from Madeleine L'Engle's Vicky Austin through Judy Blume's Margaret to Mariko and Jillian Tamaki's Skim, Raina must navigate the confusing world of adolescence while keeping her sense of self intact. Many of her experiences are familiar, from unrequited crushes to betrayals by friends to embarrassing fashion choices. The dramatic story of her teeth, however, adds a fresh twist, as does her family's experience during the San Francisco earthquake in 1989. Although the ending is slightly pedantic, Telgemeier thoughtfully depicts her simultaneous feelings of exasperation and love toward her parents, as well as her joy at developing her artistic talent she's deft at illustrating her characters' emotions in a dynamic, playful style. This book should appeal to tweens looking for a story that reflects their fears and experiences and gives them hope that things get easier. Ages 9 13.

Missouri City girl has mission to give books to 1 million kids

Localish logo

MISSOURI CITY, Texas -- Khloe Moutra first met Missouri City, Texas Police Officer Jessica Berry a few years ago. She noticed the officer's long braid right away but was too scared to say hello.

Khloe and her grandmother, Billye, visited the Missouri City Police Department and met with Berry. And from there, they developed a special friendship.

Khloe's grandmother wanted her to trust the police and go to them during an emergency, so she asked what officers could do to engage with kids.

She and Khloe came up with the idea to collect books and give them to police officers who could hand them out at community events and emergency scenes.

"My goal is to give 1 million books to 1 million kids!" Khloe said.

Khloe used her money that she had been saving to start a program called A Book and A Smile to give books to families who couldn't get them at libraries due to the pandemic.

Her program has grown, and she's been giving books to the Missouri Police Department and other organizations.

Her story got the attention of Disney. They loved it so much they gave Khloe 1,000 children's books to give back to other kids.

Body Language

The secret is in the smile, nonverbal cues of seduction, sarcasm, and true happiness..

Posted February 25, 2024 | Reviewed by Jessica Schrader

  • What Is Body Language?
  • Find counselling near me
  • The smile of true happiness is called the Duchenne smile and there are telltale features to it.
  • Seductive smiles are only successful if all nonverbal cues are positive.
  • Many of our everyday smiles are “fake” social smiles that don’t necessarily indicate happiness.

A smile means that someone is happy—or maybe not. Although we associate smiling with happiness , people can use a smile to convey a whole range of different messages. Research in nonverbal communication has discovered a number of different types of smiles and what they mean.

The Smile of True Happiness

Psychologist Paul Ekman, an expert in nonverbal communication has identified the smile that is most commonly associated with true happiness. He calls it the Duchenne smile (named after a 19th-century neurologist). The Duchenne smile has the upward corners of the mouth that identify a “smile,” but the telling cue is the narrowed eyes that leave wrinkles, or “crow’s feet,” at the outer corners of the eyes.

The Duchenne smile is in contrast to the fake smile when someone is trying to fake happiness. When the photographer tells us to “say ‘cheese’ and smile for the camera” odds are that we are engaging in a fake smile. But, if the photographer suddenly holds a rubber chicken over his head, some of us might break into a true, Duchenne smile!

The Seductive Smile

My own research, with nonverbal communication expert Howard Friedman, asked participants to appear seductive on video. What we found was that when people are effective at displaying seduction (success is when others view and agree that the participant is being seductive) their faces display positive affect. For example, a slight smile that accompanies direct eye contact, with a slow glance away, but still holding the smile.

The Uncomfortable Smile

Imagine that someone says something to you that is wholly inappropriate—a sexual innuendo, making you the butt of a joke. The reaction of many people is to display a smile to cover up the shock that they are feeling. This is what happened in one ingenious experiment. Women in a job interview were asked an inappropriate sexual question, and many of them displayed the uncomfortable smile—a very low-intensity smile that lacked the nonverbal eye cues associated with the Duchenne smile.

The Sarcastic Smile

It is nearly impossible to display sarcasm through body language cues alone. Sarcasm usually involves saying one thing verbally, while your nonverbal cues are in direct contrast—giving away the sarcasm. For example, you might say to a friend “I don’t like you!” but your smile contradicts the words. Or, turn it around. Someone says something absurd, and you reply “I didn’t know you were so smart,” accompanied by a smile and an eye roll. When someone is giving a sarcastic smile, the eyes will usually give it away. In addition, a sarcastic smile can look crooked, showing the conflicting emotions of amusement and dislike.

People smile all the time—many times per day. Yet, those smiles can mean many things besides happiness and amusement. The key to successfully decoding all those smiling faces is to look carefully at the entire array of body language cues.
